(io9)   Siberian bear-hunting suit from 1800s. It turns you into a cross between a human blowfish and Pinhead but is most likely not machine washable   (io9.com) divider line 50

I suspect it is more likely to be for bear bating than hunting

Bear baiting is nothing like hunting, subby.

Bear bating is the 'sport' of attacking a chained up bear with dogs or, apparently, morons.

Can I buy one of these on Etsy before holloween?

It consists of leather pants and jacket (and an iron helmet) studded all over with 1-inch iron nails about 3/4 in. apart. The nails are held in place by a second layer of leather lining the whole thing and quilted into place between the nails.

Doesn't sound too hard to make.

Yes, I know what bear-baiting is. The article mentioned 'bear bating'.

There is an important difference that several other Farkers have pointed out.

Actually, this suit is part of a Surrealism exhibition at the Menil Collection in Houston:

menil.org

I have a small catalog/brochure from Menil entitled "Witness to a Surrealist Vision" that describes this as: "Wildman Costume, 18th or 19th century, Germany or Switzerland. Two piece leather suit with wood spikes and iron chain, and metal helmet with metal spikes".

No 'bating, sorry.

I promise you that whoever made this never thought of it as making a Surrealist statement.

It had a practical use, however obscure, bizarre and forgotten that use may now be.

Similar in what way? Because his Ilium and Olympos books weren't bad....nowhere near Hyperion level but not bad.

2012-07-19 09:34:40 AM
Similar in expanse and style.

I'm not big on the crime drama set in a post apocalyptic world type sci-fi.

2012-07-19 09:36:13 AM
I'm guessing the headline was changed entirely.

2012-07-19 09:49:22 AM
The only series I would suggest would be the Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton (starting with Reality Dysfunction). It's pretty big in expanse..style ehh. But it's story hints at something larger similar to the Void Which Binds part of Endymion. Plus it's a fun read....just don't read the Amazon description it's atrocious.

You sound knowledgeable about this, like a master bear baiter.

2012-07-19 10:19:51 AM
I'm thinking the bear would swat you, you'd be half-eviscerated by his claws, and along the edge of the wound would be inch-long nails driven through you blunt-end first. The bear's paw would be torn up by the nails, and then you've got a severely pissed-off bear in front of you while you're busy scooping up your entrails. That's maybe a wolf suit at best.

Has anybody emailed this link FYI to Troy Hurtubise and Stephen Colbert yet?

To tell the truth, I am unimpressed. The basic assumption appears to be faulty, namely that a bear is not stupid enough to attack a porcupine. This may be true of an old experienced bear, but if I know anything about young male bears, they're as dumb as a one year old bird dog and nails will not protect you from having your head knocked off.

If I could ask Pinhead one question, I think it would be: What's the deal with all the pins?

Khazar-Khum: I promise you that whoever made this never thought of it as making a Surrealist statement.

Yeah, I phrased my explanation completely out of order.

"It's actually a Swiss or German "Wildman" suit, and it's currently on display as an example of ethnographic weird stuff in the Menil Collection's Surrealism gallery in Houston".
