For Romney:

2012-07-18 06:16:01 PM
This week just keeps getting better and better. No wonder he doesn't want to release his tax returns. The more that comes out about him, the more we find out he was lying all along.

2012-07-18 06:28:28 PM
He didn't say anything, just smiled. He was introduced as the CEO, not former CEO.

I don't know. I mean, I fully believe he lied, but I'm not sure this is anything.

2012-07-18 06:30:58 PM
At this point, I suspect his campaign staff are relying solely on sympathy votes.

While I love bashing on Romney as mush as any other primate, this particular incident doesn't strike me as a huge 'gotcha'. Regardless of whether he 'retired' or not in 1999, he was still CEO of Bain at the time.

2012-07-18 06:36:57 PM
I'm pretty sure he was not the founder of Bain.

/who is buried in grant's tomb?

2012-07-18 06:37:27 PM
The only thing I can think of here that would REALLY be damaging would be that, if his tax records are disclosed, it was discovered that Bain owned several companies that directly benefited from Olympic committee decisions, as in contracts awarded, etc..

You are correct. This adds nothing to the debate, and, frankly, its immateriality dilutes the actual area of controversy.

Isn't the actual area of controversy him and his campaign saying that he was retired from Bain in 1999? I'm not sure that him being introduced as the CEO of Bain Capital after 1999 isn't immaterial.

Except we already know that. It's in Bain's SEC filings. What some third party calls him is irrelevant after that. It's duplicative and has less weight than the SEC filings, and so it adds nothing.

The controversy, as I understand it, is essentially Romney is disavowing himself of the various things Bain did (like fetus disposal) that won't play well. But at the same time, he filed paperwork with the SEC saying he was in charge. To lie on the SEC paperwork is a felony.

If Obama is smart, his campaign will say, "We know that Governor Romney would never commit a felony, so we conclude that he's merely lying to the American people about his involvement in abortion services."

My cousin works for Bain & Co. He's getting a kick out of this.

Yes he was. One of the co-founders. He created it, along with some other vultures, and is now desperately trying to backstep away from all the things he did or was in charge of.

Bain & Company and Bain Capital are two totally different companies. Romney helped create the Bain Capital group with seed money from Bain & Co and their partners.

Potato/Tomato.

I assumed Marcus Aurelius was referring to the Bain that Rmoney did help create. Why would I think otherwise?

Also, he did not specify in the post I quote whether it was Bain Capital or Bain & Co. He just said Bain.

But thanks for the clarification I guess.

Well, some people who are attacking Bain Capital are inadvertently linking the two companies. When you just say "Bain", that's the parent company Bain & Co. which has been around a long time and is really an amazing collection of bright minds. They do good work there. The partners and investors made so much money they needed an arm to invest that money for them, kind of like how GE created GE Capital to manage their own money and it just grew from there. Except at Bain, it was the individual partners who owned all the capital.

I think that's what he's referring to. :)

No sweat. He'll just go back and retroactively retire. We'll know he's done it when he simply vanishes from the tape.

Then he'll retroactively elect himself President.

PC LOAD LETTER: This is like using the editor's notes for Dreams of My Father to prove Obama was born in Kenya. Next.

I agree. We don't need this to prove he was the CEO, we have his own sworn statements to the SEC that he was CEO for years after 1999.

2012-07-18 09:35:19 PM
he was the CEO of Bain in 2001. Has this ever been contested? He signed farking documents with the SEC that lists him as CEO

Those were all standard boilerplate documents and as a man fully versed in the law, I can assure you that like Mitt we would all just like to get home to our hotplates.

Now let's go toe-to-toe on Bird Law and see who comes out the victor.

There's still time to dump Romney before the convention. He would have to go voluntarily, though - but if every GOP bigwig demanded it, how could he go on?

Willie Geist thinks it's unfair to say that Mitt Romney was CEO of Bain even if he was in fact CEO of Bain. It's not like the guy f*cking introduced himself. Maybe he was just thinking of his bank statement and got lost in that majesty when he was introduced, and then forget to correct the person.

Ex-governors and ex-presidents are often referred to as "Governor" or "President". Not sure what the etiquette is with that.

2012-07-18 09:47:06 PM
Even if it turns out there is incontrovertible proof that Romney has been willfully deceiving people regarding his Bain involvements this entire election cycle it will have absolutely no effect on the Fox News and Limbaugh listening masses that have already been told how much of a socialist Obama is.

I really am curious how many undecided voters there really are given the absolutely immense differences between the candidates. It's not like you're splitting hairs here to decide which of these candidates is more to your liking.

2012-07-18 09:47:20 PM
Looks like Romney didn't okay his bio for the IOC, just like Obama didn't okay his Kenyan birth with his publicist...

How did W. Mitt Romney, then a Massachusetts businessman land the Salt Lake 2002 Olympics gig?

Did Romney have experience running sporting events? Without explanation LDS nepotism, to fluff Romney's resume would be a reasonable person's assumption.

Charles Krauthammer would like you to tell you to go f*ck yourself, but he has some derp caught in his throat at the moment.

Sorry, I give this about as much credence as the bad liner notes in a book saying Obama is from Kenya. This proves nothing since it's possible the person making the claim was misguided.

I'm surprised that's not getting any traction. Considering the openness that people bribed the Olympic selection committee, the cash for stadium building, etc, I'd run from being connected to the Olympics.

/unless it's getting jiggy with the Swedish women's ski team, then that would be my entire campaign talking point.
