Thank you, Mr. Nolan! Just for this, I'm going to pre-commit to seeing your latest Dark Knight movie twice while it's in the theater!

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener:
All of Nolan's movies were monsters at the box office, and without a 3D angle, either.

When one shoots for 3D effects, that changes the visual style of how the director lines up shots and whatnot.

Nolan's visual style has proven to be more than effective. Why screw that up by forcing his hand?

I see someone took The Prestige's tagline to heart

2012-07-18 05:17:55 PM
James Cameron was right -- he predicted too many movies would do a shiatty job with 3D and ruin it. I think it should be used sparingly by people like Cameron who know how to get the most out of it.

2012-07-18 05:21:08 PM
Movies that would have been worse without 3D: Avatar, Coraline, Piranha 3D, Jackass 3D

Other than that, even in movies that did 3D properly (i.e. Tron, Prometheus) I felt like it was kind of unnecessary

/guessing on Jackass, I never actually saw it

2012-07-18 05:22:20 PM

TheBeastOfYuccaFlats: What does that matter. I've yet to see a movie that was released ONLY in 3D.

They only sell chunky peanut butter. It's overused. It's all up and down the grocery store and nobody wants it. Then you have the fruit cakes that add crushed peanuts to regular peanut butter AFTER the fact, completely ruining it. I'm so pissed. I've never met anyone who likes crunchy peanut butter. (or pickles in their tuna)

Then 'Skippy' came along. img1.fark.net -...and said 'NO MORE!!!'

Skippy is the man.

TheBlackrose: GreenAdder: Don't worry. After Nolan finishes his Batman franchise, we just have to wait another week or so before Warner announces a plan for re-re-re-reboot. It'll star Channing Tatum as a hip-talkin' 20-something Bruce Wayne, known as "B-Way" to his friends. After some uncool "totes rude" people move into his neighborhood and start robbin' and killin' and stuff, he'll down the cowl and fight them off with his catchphrase, "Batter up!"

Also stay for the soundtrack, featuring Nicki Minaj, Theory of a Deadman, and whoever else the record label decided to shoehorn into the film.

And it'll all be in DBox 3D, directed by Roger Kumble.

This sounds more like the Fresh Prince of Gotham than anything.

Now this is the story all about how
My life got flipped turned upside down
Joe Chill shot my parents that was really s**ty
that's why I became the Dark Knight of Gotham City

In stately Wayne Manor born and raised
all the money I have, you'd really be amazed
Chillin out, maxin, dressed up real cool
fightin' Two Face, the Penguin and Ra's al-Ghul
And a bunch of other dudes who think they're "all that,"
wearing tights and a cape, dressin' up like a bat
I get in fight after fight, goin' ZAP-SPLAT-KAZAM
and when I'm done I get to say "I'm the Goddam Batman"

Live theatre is in 3D. Broadway makes bad musicals out of bad movies. So if you want to see something in 3D, wait for Broadway to produce it and then wait for your local theatre to produce a version with local talent.

Viola! 3D. Headache still likely.

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: Good point.

See, I caught The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man in 2D.

I felt that it was certainly not a detriment that I avoided the 3D route.

I never watch movies in 3D, either. Don't feel the money is worth it and sometimes I get vertigo anyway.

I think most animated films work well in 3D. Especially if they're not attempting hyper-real imagery. I haven't seen the latest 3D technology... but I saw Superman like 8 or so years ago in 3D. The 3D in the movie sucked.

But the trailer for Happy Feet 3D looked great (though its not a movie I'd actually watch).

Now THIS is an appropriate use of the hero tag. RDJ showing up at a kids Ironman costume contest? Not so much.

I thought the 3D in Avatar was amazing.
The part with the floating islands with waterfalls was stunning.

3D is pretty useless in most pictures. We happened to see Brave in 3D by mistake (wife went into wrong auditorium and then got glasses when she saw everyone else had them). There was absolutely no need of 3D in that show. I'm glad we only payed the 2D price, and truly, I would have rather seen it in 2D.

An example of a move made even more horrible by 3D was the Last Airbender. It was bad enough already, but the horrible 3D made it 93.7% worse.

3D done well is good.

3D "conversions"...usually not so good.

It's a "new" format to most filmmakers, it will take time to adapt and learn. We'll never get to holographic movies without it.

Most appropriate use of 3D was this:

I actually avoid 3D because the experience stinks - glasses over glasses and whatnot.

Plus, there is very little upside I can tell in films that have 3D. It seems lazy. Directors since film began have been able to create the illusion of depth of field, 3D means all that fancy camera work doesn't have to happen, just point n' shoot.

rkane1: beat me to it!

I'm just glad I'm not the only one who saw it. It flew under a lot of people's radars because it wasn't a big sci-fi epic and its use of 3D was subtle and served an educational purpose.

Agreed...it was an amazing, humbling experience. Hetzog was so lucky to be allowed to film. It's the best document of the subject we could ever really hope for. Saw it once on my own and then again when I dragged a bunch of friends.

So he cost the studio

scottydoesntknow: And I certainly don't want to shoot in a format just to charge people a higher ticket price."

So I'm assuming this will be his last Hollywood picture? I love you Mr. Nolan, but if there's one thing a studio cares more about than the satisfaction of the consumer, it's making money.

I really wonder how much money this movie is missing out on because it's not in 3D. I doubt it will beat The Avengers opening weekend.

And he said this over a year and a half ago.

Can't you do the 3-D after the film is shot, with the witchcraft and such? Then a few months before the next batman they can release the 3-D of this one.

No, you can't.

You can force it in there, but it never looks as good. It's like sticking cooked vegetables in hot water and calling it soup. It's not gonna taste anything like a proper soup.

Depends on the movie, I wouldn't want to see Nolan's Batman in 3D. I liked Spider-man in 3D, my only complaint would be directed toward Emma Stone, she knew the movie was going to be in 3D, she should have stuffed her bra.

Those suckers who bought those 3D TVs in order to be able to watch 12 movies are not going to see the return.

I liked the 3D movies I saw last summer, but the movies were fine without it too.

It's really pretty pointless.

Some of the worst games on the DS were because games forced you to use the touchscreen exclusively yet could be played perfectly fine without it.

You mean like the Castlevania game that made you draw a seal after every boss? Because it's fun to snatch the stylus and rapidly scribble on the screen right after defeating Dracula?

Add me to the list of those with glasses who have problems experiencing 3D. I generally don't bother, but I wanted to see how Scorsese would use it. After some trial and error I found a head position where, if I didn't move at all, I could see the 3D and the image wasn't all blurry and dark. There were a couple of kind of neat uses (like the cut to the dog in the tub and the papers flying), but mostly it seemed unnecessary.
