There's no point in inflicting any punishment on this man, but its worth indicting and convicting him, I think.

Talk about tripping a guy up just as he's about to cross the finsih line, but considering what this guy did in WWII? Things so sadistic other SS Guards intervened to stop him some times? Good. It won;t make a difference to him, but let it stand as a warning to all the ethnic cleansers and warlords of OUR generation: You can never rest, you can never escape your past, we WILL find you, or we will hound you until the grave

I loved that scene so much. If I've learned one thing about movies, it's that:

Fassbender + speaking German in a scene + switching to English at the end of the scene in a tone of vengeance = awesome

/weird he's done that more than once

Some prisons have graveyards for prisoners who die while serving their sentence and remain unclaimed, and those serving multiple life sentences. Send the SOB to one of those. The Law may be an ass, but if you are sentenced to 700 years without parole, you should have to serve 700 years and not be let off easy just because you die before your time is up.

The prison Warden should just tell the family: we've got the body and we're keeping it until we sure he's not coming back as a Nazi Zombie like in that movie I saw last weekend.

The Holocaust is pretty much the ultimate no-statute-of-limitations crime. It doesn't matter if the guy's 97 years old. You go get him anyway.

Csatary was been convicted in absentia for war crimes in Czechoslovakia in 1948 and sentenced to death.

So why are they trying him again? Tie a cement block to his ankles, swing him by his neck and go have some tea and biscuits.

This is the first thing I thought of. Always loved that story, it's brilliantly disturbing. Don't care much for the part when they start just killing hobos for no apparent reason. That seemed a bit strange.

I've said similar things. Once they die, cremate them and mix the ashes with cement. Use it to make a planter or bench on the prison grounds.

"Oh no, you misunderstood. You're _never_ leaving."

FTA...I'm confused!
"Csatary's lawyer, Gabor Horvath B., said that a judge, acting on a request from prosecutors, ordered his client to be confined to house arrest for a maximum of 30 days. Horvath B. said he had appealed the ruling, which also opened the way for authorities to confiscate Csatary's passport."

Is that some Hungarian naming convention, or did this guy end up with a strip mall lawyer?

Do we want to send the message that if you manage to elude death and arrest long enough, we might still convict you, but we will not punish you ?

I say that even if he only has a single day left to live, that day should be spent in jail. At long last, let him suffer the ignominy of being behind bars as a convicted criminal. There can be no statute of limitations for war crimes.

How many people can still need to work at the Simon Wiesenthal Center? There can't be more than a dozen of these Nazi criminals left (if that many). Most have probably been dead for years now. It's time for the Jewish people to but the Holocaust behind them. They shouldn't forget, but attempting to mete out punishment at this late date is more emotionally harmful than beneficial.

You realize prison sentences are not just to punish the criminal? They're also to show the rest of the state/country/world that nothing will stop us from going after you, forever, when you do something this horrid.

Of course this varies in degrees based on the crime. And we have statutes of limitations for lesser crimes, sure.

But in the end... prison is not just a punishment. Its an advertisement to others who may be considering doing the same crime at some time.

What about all the members of the Valhalla Project, who swore eternal fealty to Satan to gain eternal life? We mustn't let them escape.

No, just no. "Century-old men from the losing side" is what both my grandfathers were, and they did their time and were reintegrated into society, more or less successfully. Men like this guy are entirely different beasts altogether. Hunt them down and put them away.

In October 1997, Canadian authorities said the 82-year-old had left the country, apparently bound for Europe, before they had the chance to decide his fate in a deportation hearing. His citizenship had been revoked in August and the deportation order was based on his obtaining citizenship by giving false information.

"false information" is a bit vague. Most of the time, people just lie about having a criminal record in their country of origin, or being persecuted by ruling majority, or how many wives and children they really have.

Few go to the elaborate charade of creating a completely fake identity for themselves..
