FTFA: The public backlash, Gillum said, was almost immediate and jarring. Within weeks, the boy's mother reported to state investigators that she was confronted in a Lock Haven business by an unhappy local resident who had learned that her son had been linked to the allegations triggering Sandusky's removal as a volunteer.

The child's identity spread rapidly through the community, the psychologist said, making him and his mother the target of harassment - and ultimately threats of harm - by locals upset that Sandusky had been dismissed from the school.

School officials did not respond to requests for comment.

From his initial meetings with the boy, Gillum said, it became clear, based on the victim's fear and the community's anger, that extraordinary steps were needed to protect him and his mother.

NCAA has contributed to the sexual abuse of many young boys inadvertanly. I'm sure they were unaware of it, but still there have to be rules that somehow cover this.
Yes, sports junkies can be crazy.

Yep. And that's why the people of State College, PA should have the Penn State football program removed until they can gain a little farking perspective.

I thought the talk of suspending the football program was overblown until I read this.

No decent high school prospect is going to want to play for Penn State any time soon. The best thing may be to suspend the program for a few years while people regain their perspective all the way around. And God help the players if Penn State does decide to field a team this fall.

/they're soooo farked

At a minimum, Penn State should be evicted from the NCAA and Big Ten, its athletes allowed to transfer without penalty, and the school be allowed to remain open as a NAIA / independent. Paterno's wins after 1998 should be vacated. The statue obviously should be torn down.

Investigations into Second Mile, the Paterno family finances, various connections in the community should and must continue.

All college towns have skeletons. Very few of those involve serial rape on campus property by a faculty emeritus who was allowed to evade prosecution for 14 years by the administration at the request of the football coach. Penn State must be made an example of.

Careful. Pull them out of the cave too fast and they'll just run in deeper.

You have to let them de-gas a bit and then explain how tens of thousands of college kids and alumni who didn't commit any crimes aren't the enemy.

Remember the blacks who pulled that guy's pants off after the Zimmerman-Martin shooting? They've calmed down now. Same with all these looneys here.

It's amazing how after everything that's come out, you can still white knight people who covered up and aided and abetted a child rapist.

It's disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourself.

But hey, we can't punish that because the fine upstanding maggots who harassed a victim of rape because he dared report his rapist to the authorities might get hurt.

F*ck you and your child rapist supporting ass.

You're calling to rake my entire University over the coals for the actions of less than a handful of very senior people, one of whom is already dead and the other who will dying in a box.

You're basically attacking me for things I couldn't have known about and punishing innocent children for what? For nothing. The blood you want's already been spilled, little wolf. Go chase Spainer. Leave Penn State alone.

doglover: You're calling to rake my entire University over the coals for the actions of less than a handful of very senior people, one of whom is already dead and the other who will dying in a box.

No, I'm saying we should shut down their football program because those very senior people aided and abetted a child rapist to protect it. They allowed Sandusky to rape children in their facilities because they feared bad publicity.

And then you have these "people" who harassed the victims because the victim had the audacity to report his attacker. They see a person who was serially raped as a child and think he's the bad guy because of their religious like devotion to this program. Think about that for a minute. Really let it sink in. This pathetic "community" thought it was worse to arrest a child rapist than the fact that Sandusky actually raped children with the full knowledge of senior members of the University.

Your university protected and aided Sandusky when he was raping children. And you think it's worse that they be called out on it than these vile maggots be called out for being OK with a predator using their facilities to rape children.

The University shouldn't be punished as a whole. Just their football program because that's what they were protecting. The pathetic inability separate the two is exactly why these maggots allowed Sandusky to rape children for fourteen f*cking years. You talk about punishing innocent children? What "innocent" children? The ones who were raped with full knowledge of Paterno and company? Nobody is blaming the alumni of the University. No one thinks you were responsible. Nobody is saying you knew.

Which you, and these pieces of shiat in the article don't have a problem with. Paterno deserves to be dead and have his legacy forever tarnished and to be known as a man who would have allowed his own grandchildren to be raped if it meant protecting the program. Sandusky deserves whatever he gets in prison, and the rest of the people who covered it up deserve whatever is coming to them. All because they thought protecting a football program was more important than preventing a monster from raping children.

Allowing the Penn State football program to continue is allowing these vermin to get away with their horrific crimes. Because what they wanted most of all is for the program to continue.

THIS. I love college football, but letting the football team define your university or even you as a student or a person is exactly the sort of unwavering blind fealty that gives men like Paterno the power and the impetus to keep something this insidious under wraps. The cover up was to protect the image, the "Penn State" brand, where football is apparently paramount to all else, and by all appearances, still is. The disconnect is just mind-boggling.

Actually, the call to eliminate the football program is warranted in that the football program is why this coverup existed. Basically, it is warranted to prevent other football or athletic programs from trying to hide illegal activity and as punishment to the program that allowed this coverup. Not as punishment to the students or the athletes (though some of them probably had doubts about Sandusky too),

Exactly. These people have wrapped up their entire identity in this football program to the point where they think that punished men who covered up child rape is a personal attack on the university as a whole and on themselves. Even when people propose very specific punishments with protections for the athletes in the program, they still act as if the entire university is being destroyed.

Does anyone think that an English Lit professor would have received the same protections? Or a member of the grounds keeping staff? Or some random administrator in the admissions department? Hell no. They would have been arrested the moment someone found out.

It's religious zealot like devotion and it's creepy as hell.

Suicide isn't really Penn State style. I wouldn't want to be in the shoes of the schlub who has to break THAT news, though. It would be like kicking puppies. Very large, drunk puppies who would not take the news well at all and have opposable thumbs and engineering supplies and training.

Sorry. The "It'll hurt the community / innocent students / future prospects" argument for not giving the program the death penalty doesn't hold water.

Know why?

Because it's the exact goddamn argument the people who protected this rapist asshole used to justify covering up the rape in the first place.

Your attitude demonstrates exactly why the football program needs to go. Once Happy Valley residents learn that there's more to life that football - that having a football program is a privilege, not a right - football can return.

Seriously, I don't care if you are trolling - I'm sick of hearing about how this would punish the community. If getting rid of football harms the community that much, then the community is seriously farked up. If businesses rely on football that much, then they need a new business plan. The elimination of Penn State football would be the best thing that ever happened to that community.
