At some point, they decided it's better to just be weird than funny.

I don't think that anyone in the world is capable of doing the amount of drugs that it would have taken to get "12 Oz. Mouse".

God that show was so good the first couple of seasons. The Stimutacs and Lost In Time episodes were pure spun gold.

Squidbillies, Metalocalypse and that Odd Future show are funny. Can't wait for Venture Bros. to return! The live action spoof shows all blow and the Eric Andre show is the most consistently watchable show put out by the T&E production company but that's not saying much. ATHF(S1YKW) is the most guilty of weird for weird sake these days.

A new social model that's for sure. Not magical rocketships and improbable space colonies, guaranteed. Long life only requires lots of space and resources if you can only see life as a process of getting a bigger and bigger house and a bigger and bigger car, etc.

Even if you believe fervently that magic rocketships are going to whisk you away to a magical condo on Mars, how many people can you realistically whisk away?

You'll never even be able to keep pace with current birthrates. And to go where, exactly? A hostile place with NO resources and NO space for humans? How is that better? You'll have to bring a shiatload of resources with you in the first place.

Sorry Way South, you won't retire on Mars, and your grandkids will ride horses, and might, MIGHT, see a jetliner fly once in their lives.

Why is that a bad thing? You don't want to live to explore how humans will go on in the future?

Quantum Apostrophe: A new social model that's for sure

Based on what exactly, hope?

If You start with an anti-science and anti-humanist view then think useful things will pop out of thin air, good luck with that. Just remember that those who don't fit into your imaginary utopia will turn on it and consume the remains to sate their hunger.

Quantum Apostrophe: Long life only requires lots of space and resources if you can only see life as a process of getting a bigger and bigger house and a bigger and bigger car, etc.

Long life requires food, medicine, water, and power. All of those are currently sourced from the land.
If you want to do it for more people, you need more land. Either you find it on earth (by extending into the sea) or you cheat and bring resources down from the sky.

Do neither and our population cap only shrinks faster.
Its a real simple concept to understand that space is part of enhancing the quality of life for everyone.

Quantum Apostrophe:

It's bad because it suggests "a return to simpler times" no cars, everyone walks or rides a push bike to work and no airplanes or space exploration... it sounds, frankly, like the masterbation fantasies of your average lentalist.

I would understand if kids never see a jetplane because air travel was outmoded and long since replaced by something better, more economical, faster... but the choice of the word 'rare' along with 'ride horses' intimates they'll of been destroyed for other reasons.

As to launching resources for off-world colonies, nothing is a zero sum game. Yes we're going to have to send resources to Mars or the Moon to start the initial construction phase but you can do that with robotic JCB's. After that you can, with effort, begin harvesting construction materials from the new world... I suggest you research things like Mooncrete (yes, NASA were/are working on Lunar regolith based concrete). So whilst it's understandable that my kids wouldn't be living on Mars, I'd expect construction of 'dome 1' to be well underway by the time they're nearing retirement.

TL;DR: The reason what you have described is bad is it shows us (as a species or individual countries) giving up our industrial and scientific progress.
