As the father of three daughters, I'm going to go out on a limb and agree with you.

Teenagers think they know everything, and parents are (or should be) keenly aware of how naive their kids really are. The last thing any parent wants is for their kid to get hurt. And as much as you want your daughter to learn from YOUR mistakes, the fact is that she has to make her own mistakes, and learn from them, because some lessons just aren't learned any other way.

I'll be a mess for years when this happens.

Most of the fathers of eighteen year old females I know would do anything up to and including plunging a dagger into their own thighs to get their daughters off their hands.

Is it just me or is this the creepiest article posted on Fark this week? These feelings may well be true, and they may well be unavoidable. But for the love of all that is good and holy in the world, there are some things that are better off not being aired in public.

This happened to me when my daughter turned six. I managed to recover when I realized that her boyfriend was Barney the Dinosaur.

When your daughters fall in love, it's probably a good time to explain to them the drawbacks of incest.

My daughter is 13. By the time I was 13, I was drinking, smoking weed, I'd dropped mesc a few times, and I had already gone quite nearly all the way with a couple girls. This summer, my daughter has her first "crush" (that she's open about, anyway) and cancelled a planned outing so she could go to this boy's birthday party. She's never done drugs or had more than a sip of wine. Until recently, all boys were "stupid" and "annoying" (she is a gloriously geeky child who prefers logic puzzles to "omfg isn't he cute!").

Personally, while it did sort of "ouch" to have the a father/daughter outing cancelled (she's with me for long weekends every other week), I am just glad she's not anywhere near what a horror I was at that age. Besides, I hope she lives a long, healthy, happy life, and that's going to include being, well, an adult and likely a sexual one (though the latter hopefully not until she's like... 30, or I'm dead, or both).

I believe it was Bobcat Goldthwaite who put it best (I'm misquoting, I am sure): "Someone asked me, you know, if the first time my daughter has sex, isn't that going to freak me out? I said no, number one isn't going to freak me out at all. Number, like, 5000 might piss me off a little."

Yeah, I stopped be cooling to hang out with long before either of my daughters hit 18. But my 18 year old daughter with a 27 year old, damn right I'm running Mark off.
