that was an interesting anecdote but not exactly worth creating a cartoon around.

I enjoyed it. Who puts the stage under the staircase?

Meh. I've heard much better stories about up and coming comedians that eventually made it big. Sirius/XM has some good interview shows on the various comedy channels.

yeah i think the problem is patton has turned a lot of his good up-and-coming stories into bits already. that well might be a little dry at this point.

Every comedian has to go through that, apparently. Louis C.K. talks about how his crap lasted a decade, until George Carlin told him to start fresh every year.

Probably. Wasn't a knock on Patton... he's a very good comedian.

yeah for sure, i said in my initial comment that it was a pretty boring story. still, life on the jr. comedy circuit sounds absolutely miserable. at least as a struggling band on tour you can count on free drugs and sex with random bar flies.

I know others will argue, but I have always thought stand-up to be the most difficult form of live performance.

I deal with local open-mic comics frequently (host a local variety show) and I am always amazed at the amount of punishment they can take and still keep coming back. Takes a long time to hone those skills... and a lot of shiat taking.

You know, that does make a lot of sense:
1. It starts with public speaking, which many people list as their #1 fear
2. You're doing something that everyone thinks they can do, jabber and have people laugh, as opposed to someone singing well, playing an instrument, dancing, etc...
3. You have to go out and make a bunch of strangers like you while you choose not only the topic but the tone of the conversation

No wonder so many bush-league types just stick to dick and fart jokes laced with heavy profanity.

Well, this is only tangentially topical, but here's two of my favorite Patton Oswalt bits:

Oh, and in case your only exposure to Patton is via Ratatouille, these are NSFW.

Rats and Orgy

Christmas Shoes

Agreed. I mean, you're generally alone and unknown. With a band, at least- even if you suck, and are not getting any more popular- you're on a road trip with your buddies.

Also, when it comes to comedy... you either hit it or bomb. And most up and comers bomb more often. Must get almost zero satisfaction.

At least if your band is marginally good, you'll be "good enough" background music while people drink and party at the bar. I've seen my share of not-so-good bands playing at bars down here. Its not that annoying, you can kinda tune it out and still have fun. And if they at least have 1-2 good songs, I'd consider that a good set.

With comedy, you kinda gotta hit it 90% of the time at least.

Did stand-up three times; nailed it the first time, ok the second, booed off stage the third, never went back

I know some people are tired of it, but I still love his old Black Angus Steakhouse routine.

Is this how hard it's going to be for me to be an extra for free in any media production made on this planet erf? My dear god....
