They're probably going to do it wrong, where clicking on the link takes you to an HTML form where you have to enter your name, birth date, address, etc without prefilling any of it from your Facebook account. Basically, I'm betting they'll just stick a "like" button on the registration page they already have.

2012-07-17 08:10:40 PM
I should RTFA.
Once it's live, Facebook users can click on the application within the secretary of state's Facebook page. They'll need to agree to let Facebook access their information, which will be used to prefill their name and date of birth in the voter registration form. Users will still need to provide a driver's license or state ID card number to continue.

Doesn't seem incredibly useful if you still have to have ghasp, a valid driver's license or ID.

Even if the Republicans made shiat up to scare people about this Romney will never win the State, so "conservatives" won't be alarmed by this.

What do you mean by option? The choice between a drivers license or generic state id?

I'm just saying that this would be interesting if they registered you based solely on your Facebook account. But since all it does is prefill part of the form, it's not that remarkable.

/or you just didn't like my unrelated jab at the anti-voter-id crowd?

They are doing it mostly to make it "social" to try to drum up more voters. And of course, drumming up more voters (especially online) generally leans democratic, so, expect the GOP to be against this.

I don't know about that. You should see my Facebook wall sometimes. I've got a number of birther relatives and get to see everything they post and the even more idiotic comments their friends leave on those posts.
I have no idea how many of them are already registered voters though. It may very well be the case that derpy republicans have the gumption to go out and register on their own that herpy democrats lack; but it would be kind of ridiculous to consider facebook some librul breeding ground.

My only concern here is that Washington has vote-by-mail only, which is supposed to be validated by comparing signatures on the ballot to signatures on the official rolls. Voter registration forms that you fill out by hand are signed, so how are they going to get the signatures to validate votes when everything is online?

If it's anything like the DoL's 'FoolProof' system is, it will have holes big enough to drive a Chicago hearse through, if you know what I'm saying. And I think you do.

For information only...
The State of Washington is one of two states that allows the granting of a driver's license (and voter registration) based on an applicants ability to produce a document that states they are residents of the State of Washington. There's a sh*t load of loopholes in this policy that allows non-legal residents to acquire these privileges. The biggest loophole is that the DMV doesn't ask for proof of legal status of the applicant. I think the Facebook thing will make it worse.
Here's an article from 2010 that talks about the problem. Things got worse up here when Utah changed their law.Clicky

I don't understand why we keep voting restricited to an offline, go down to someplace and vote affair.

I can vote for an American Idol over the phone or online.
I can do millions of dollars worth of business online.

But I can't vote.

Instead I have to take time off work on a Tuesday to vote.

It would be really nice if the government had a way for you to officially register a GPG as belonging to you, which could then be used in place of your signature on any document like electronic tax filing, voter registration, etc. It wouldn't be a perfect system, but damn it would be better than what we have now.

The secretary of state's office said Tuesday it will have an application on its Facebook page that allows residents to register to vote and then "like" the application and recommend it to their friends. It's expected to launch as early as next week.

I don't see a problem with this.

I have history with Barney. And nightmares.

Back about 2000ish, Microsoft came up with a line of plushy toys that you could "program" via a USB pad. Among them was one Barney. We were the outsourcer (not that outsourced, we were still in WA state) that did tech support for the damned things. There was an incident with about 100 little Barneys going all out at the same scheduled time in a certain manager's office.

Then I managed to get a promotion and my new boss's name was Barney. If that wasn't enough, his brother in law was the god's honest voice of Barney on the TV shows. I've got a collection of recordings that happened at drunken BBQs that would curl your ears. If the government ever comes for me, I'm releasing them.

/too many Barneys

I loved voting by mail when I lived in WA. If I had last minute questions about a candidate, an office or a legislative issue, I could just hop online and research on the spot before checking a box. I trusted that paper-based system a LOT more than I trust electronic voting machines.

Same here in Oregon. Love it.

Of course a Republican for president hasn't won Oregon since 1984. No connection since it was fourteen years before vote-by-mail started. Just a fun fact.

People use their real names on Facebook? Maybe I'm just old and paranoid, but I've NEVER used my real name online since the internet was hatched. Going by a handle, tag, or call-sign and being anonymous online keeps the government from proving who you are.
