Martin's family doesn't "need" a lawyer. They're not charged with any crime and they're not being sued. Yeah, I know what's going on. They're a mouthpiece right now. They won't file a wrongful death suit until any criminal charges against Zimmerman are settled because it will be a slam-dunk if Zimmerman is convicted. If he's not convicted they still have a chance, but it seems to me that they're just a little too eager to profit from the death of their son.

Unfortunately conflict is something that seems to be part of the human condition. Just because conflict sometimes arises between people with different skin tones that does not automatically mean it's racially motivated although if one side is black and the other white, the race card will inevitably be played.

The case is public and in a big way, whether or not it should the public appearances and "character questions" and so on and so forth are going to be a part of the trial. Additionally there are a lot of conflicts of interest here. The authorities have reasons to pursue the case and reasons to bury it, the family has reason to question whether or not justice will be done, if there IS going to be a wrongful death suit I'm pretty sure it has to wait until the criminal trial is over (maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think you can drag someone to court if they're in jail/court for something else, because criminal trials take precedence). Finally there are threats out there that a lawyer can protect against, like the Martin family getting sued for slander or whatnot if they say something that would be "legally inadvisable" to one of the many cameras currently pointed at them.

The lawyer is used to seek a settling of differences with law and order instead of blood and vengeance. That's how we roll in a nation of laws and order.

He is untouchable and beyond criticism because he represents one or more sacred tenets;

#1) he shot a black kid (otherwise known as doing a good deed)
#2) he did it using a concealed carry firearm, which therefore makes this an attack on the 2nd amendment if you question him
#3) he is claiming protection under the SYG law, otherwise known as the 'Angry Middle-aged White Guy Wish-Fulfillment Law', which usually ties right back into #1, by means of #2

Ask me how I know about this - I actually did shoot an intruder in a home invasion. It sounds like she decided this was a good time to come out with it because she had someone who would listen, take her seriously and possibly do something about it. Not really. I don't have a burglar alarm, but I also don't have a lawyer. I have insurance. I've thought about this. If I were burglarized (as I have been in the past) what would they take? Laptop, gone. TVs, gone (except for the Sony CRT which is too heavy). BluRay players gone. DVD/BluRay collection - possibly gone. We're not even at $5000 yet and that's retail value, not current value.

IANAL but I don't think there's anything keeping them from filing a wrongful death suit right now - not legally anyway. They could, but it will be a lot easier if the state gets a murder conviction first.

I don't think there's any protections against being sued in civil court just because you have a criminal trial pending.

Kudos to the Martin family for hiring a lawyer instead of a hitman, but I don't see the need for either. I've known 2 murder victims. I knew the parents of one of those murder victims. They didn't hire lawyers. They were never charged with any crime or sued in civil court. Instead they worked with prosecutors as best they could while they dealt with their own grief.
