This story is clearly a fraud. A giant container shiped, filled with cargo, sailing from the US to Belguim?
Clearly that is a lie. Everyone knows that the US doesn't make or export anything.

Landbridge shipping to a Post Panamax carrier. While I'm sure it carries American cargo, it likely carries Chinese junk that arrived in LA, was put on a train, and went out of Charleston.

The US exports empty cargo containers.

It was filled with Bud and Coors Light because Belgians have a secret craving for them.

$31,000/shipping container sounds a bit low.

On average, about one huge farking ship sinks or burns or runs aground somewhere in the world everyone freaking week.

But to have a burning Panamax container ship just drifting out there, now that's something special.

I export agricultural products from the US for a living. Been doing it twenty years now. I assure you the US exports TONS of products every day.

I sell a lot of beef to China. Between that and the tons of tobacco North Carolina sells to the Chinese, we are doing our part to kill them all with either cancer or heart disease.

Wow when I saw the P&C source, I thought I might be able to go scope a burning ship at moor either downtown or at SPA-Wando, but obviously the giant lady ain't nowhere near us anymore.

Sometimes seawater reacts with chemicals to cause more fire, or at least poison gas. Yay!

Freight comes into Charleston from all over the world and goes out of Charleston to all over the world. Some goods passing through are made in the US, most are not. Such is the nature of an international seaport. Just because this ship called on Charleston does not mean that it offloaded or shipped containers. It may have called only for fuel, repairs, shore leave, etc.

To cite the two largest:

The United States (Random House, Collins)
The United Kingdom (Cambridge)

Between just those, that's about 75% of the world's native (first-language) English speakers, who should be familiar with inflammable...

Not really, standard liability is typically a per kilo rate. Ive see this vary by commodity and carrier...so I can see how it would be a $31,000/container LIABILITY to the carrier but the actual VALUE of said burnt up and crispy items might and probably is higher. Also, alot of companies are self insured and just ship using whatever the standard valuation a carrier has. One of our biggest clients never purchases insurance from us to cover their million dollar semiconductor equipment that we move day in day out and opt for our $5/lb standard coverage

I want to get two of those half sized shipping containers, weld them together side by side, chop out the joining walls, and make a work shop/garage out of them.

what's the average price on those things anyways? and whats the best way to get them for the best price? just go down to the ship yard and say wassup?

You can find them for sale at places like the State Port in Wilmington, NC, occasionally. Usually they are sold as surplus via auction. Even the beat-up containers ain't cheap.

Or you can buy them via the internets.

Actually, my company has a lot of equipment on board the Flaminia, heading for a scientific project in Macedonia. The loss may cripple our cash flow and bankrupt the company, either because the project is delayed a year (if the equipment is undamaged) or the insurance settlement on damaged equipment comes too late. We should have known to choose a vessel with almost any other name. By the way, the US is second or third largest among exporting companies in value of goods, close to Germany and behind only China. We also have huge service exports.

Actually Chinese stuff gets shipped directly from China to Europe, usually into Rotterdam or Hamburg.

Did your company book directly with the steamship or with a shipping company? If you went thru a shipping company you should be able to file a claim with them immediately and get that process started. After that, its up to the shipping company to pursue the claim with the steamship (been there, done that - not fun, neither are airline claims).

Flammable and inflammable mean exactly the same thing... burns easily.

According to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage, back in the 1920s the National Fire Protection Association urged people to start using the word 'flammable' instead of 'inflammable' (which is the original word) because they were concerned some people might think inflammable meant not-flammable.

Yep. MarineTraffic is one of the more complete one and all free online. And I think it's been operating for like 6+ years now.

That track for MSC Flaminia seem to be the last capture from a coastal AIS station available. Some ship seems to self report on the high seas (through satellite internet or Inmarsat C) but that doesn't seem to be case for Flaminia.

Although, if you wanted for only 3300$/year, vesseltracker.com can offer you a global 24-hour delayed satellite AIS coverage.

/ ExactEarth posted this better map (it's unreadable though. Red is Flaminia, Green is DS Crown).
// I swear, I'm not a salesman for them even if I sound like one.

It occurs to me that having a few PBYs around would have been nice. Slow, but crazy range.
