The "reporter" is probably some graduate-degree holding english major that's forced to take a job for a hack newspaper because there are no jobs available that are "worthy" of their advanced knowledge. He's using an artical about McDonalds to vent his frustration. There seems to be a growing trend in this kind of "quirky" reporting style.
