Jerry Springer's media career is sort of sad. Outside the glossy packaging of the Jerry Springer Show, he's still a big advocate for liberal causes. The guy wanted to be the next Phil Donahue and talk about real social problems, but he ended up being the host of a modern carnival side show act.

/Of course, he did bounce a check to a prostitute, so maybe that's karma.

Oh crap, does Obama not realize what a can of worms he opened with that one?

/Jerry Springer is far smarter fellow than he plays on tv.

Former mayor of a big city in a swing state? Sounds like a good person to visit.

I recall an incident in 1997 where two news anchors resigned in protest because Jerry Springer was given a commentary segment on their broadcast.

Springer's reaction was actually quite nice to hear. It was along the lines of "I'm really sorry they felt they had to resign. Obviously they're not fans of my show, but that's not related to what I was hired to do here. Yes, I host the most outrageous talk show on TV, and I do it because that's my job. It's what my employer wants from me. Just as when I was mayor of Cincinnati, I did it to the best of my ability because that was my job. And on this newscast, I've always planned to present my commentary with the care that it deserves because that's what I was hired to do here. My persona on my show has influence on this newscasting role because the two job descriptions are completely different, and it would be unprofessional of me to not keep them separate."

I had a good amount of respect for the guy after he put it that way.

Jerry Springer is to the best of my ability to determine a pretty earnest, lifelong Democrat. He screwed up and wrote a check to a hooker while he was the city manager of Cincinnati, but after sincere contrition he actually remained a popular political and later media figure there. I know the media persona is ridiculous, but everything I've ever heard about him says he's the real deal; a populist who happens to be a very effective public speaker.

President Obama, I've learned three important lessons from my time as mayor of Cincy:

1) Don't fark a prostitute while you are mayor.
2) If you do fark a prostitute while mayor, don't write her a personal check.
3) If you do fark a prostitute and pay her with a personal check, make sure you have the funds to cover said check.

I fully support thin mints.

And isn't there some sort of rule that disallows avowed liberals from bilking rubes? Some kinda "we're all equal, we'll call you handicapable" PC thing? Springer seems downright Republican in his exploitation of the simple masses.

You know how Springer's show came about? After he left politics, he had a commentary segment on the local TV news. He was popular, so they turned his segment into a full scale talk show. The talk show was initially a very serious current events show, but the producers noticed that whenever they did a somewhat ridiculous topic, his ratings would grow. So, they kept doing more and more ridiculous topics, until it snowballed into the show he hosts today. I like the fact that Springer just flowed with it.

No no... he was City Councilman when he bounced the check and then he became Mayor.

I remember him doing a few shows (maybe it was a week's worth?) on homeless kids. One kid showed him around his area and took him to an abandoned building where a bunch of them were living. At one point, he was talking to the kid on the street in the middle of the night and a couple gunshots went off in the distance.

Shortly afterward the show turned into showcasing men who cheat on their wives with other men who wear adult diapers, or something equally valuable to society.

Ever watch the show? I'd say anyone who goes onto it, especially in this day and age, is in on the joke.

I've never had any desire to work in entertainment, but I would pay for my own plane ticket to Connecticut just to work as an unpaid intern on the Maury Show for a couple months.
