Soup4Bonnie: MyRandomName: What has ISSA lost?

His pissing contest with the administration.

How? It is now going to civil trial to fight the claim. You think Obama already won? Please learn how congress works, it shows your ignorance of basic workings.

MyRandomName: vartian: House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) has set his sights on other members of President Barack Obama's cabinet - sending all of them a letter asking whether government resources were used when they spoke in front of pro-Obama "super PACs." One problem: according to recent reports, none of them have made any such appearances. In fact, the pro-Obama "super PAC" known as Priorities USA Action has only had a single member of the Obama administration - senior adviser David Plouffe - appear at an event.

Laser-focused on Jobs, these Republicans.

You are aware of the actual committee ISSA is on right? The house has passed 30 bills related to the economy sitting on Reid's desk... So not sure the angle you are heading. Is it only value house work if rubber stamping democrat bills? The house no longer gets a say? The fact that Reid refuses to send house.bills even to committee should show you where the obstruction is.

Those 30 jobs bills were mostly pollute / drill / rape the environment.

Try again.

k4mi: It seems that Republicans are always trying to impeach or investigate when a Democrat is in office. Clinton with Lewinsky (which admittidly he did lie but it was a BJ). Now this. Granted the Fast and Furious thing was stupid and whoever green lighted the idea needs a kick in the nuts, but how is getting pissy over losing doing any good.

The only Democrat investigation I cna think of would be Watergate which was actually a big deal.

Iran-Contra was a pretty big deal if you paid attention to the content and not the gloss that was sold to the public to protect Reagan.

/Basically the (valid) Watergate and Iran-Contra investigations put it into their GOP's mind that there should be a culture of constant investigation whenever the person in the White House had a (D) behind his name.

/Five years of digging on Obama and Fast & Furious is the ONLY thing they've come up with to pin on him.

*ahem*

NORTH SD County. Oceanside is most definitely NOT East.

Well one group is a bunch of poor redneck tea party wackos the other are a bunch of middle class redneck wackos that think they are in the 1%. That's the difference.

Hey- Oceanside has Democrats. We even have ONE on the city council :P

NeoCortex42: Come to think of it, I haven't heard much about the F&F stuff lately in the news. Last I heard, they found Holder in contempt and that was it? Has anything new happened since? And did the contempt charge actually mean anything?

The contempt vote triggers an automatic investigation into Holder by the Justice department, which is headed by Holder. The investigation is still pending.

Hobodeluxe: squidgod2000: ddam: Dimensio: Had a responsible Representative, interested in removing incompetence and corruption, investigated the "Fast and Furious" failure, responsible individuals within the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives may have actually been identified and fired. Instead, due to Representative Issa pursuing a conspiracy of dubious reality, nothing has been accomplished.

Based on all I've read the major problems were with state DAs that didn't want to waste their time with small charges on gun possession, not with DEA. Not saying that DEA should be wiped out because they're a waste but they didn't make the lion's share of mistakes in this investigation.

USAs, not DAs.

DEA made most of the mistakes, but the USAs simply failed to act or couldn't be bothered to.

actually there was no law that allowed them to track the guns. thanks to the NRA and the GOP

What proposed legislation, opposed by the National Rifle Association, would have enabled tracking of the firearms?

Be on the lookout!
Suspect Darrell Issa is driving a late-model Congressional committee that was reported stolen in 2010.
21-50 bye.

Meh, this is all just as disingenuous as the 33 repeals of Obamacare. But you already knew that...

2012-07-17 12:43:04 PM
Does the GOP know that TWO can play at this game.

Obama can declassify and release all kinds of naughty things done by GWB in the run-up to and during the Iraq War. Still want to go fishing?

Splinshints: So, basically, if you RTFA, he has now started an investigation into things that never happened based on media reports that were never written.

What do you think would happen to a regular person like you or I if we based our job performance on a series of delusions supported by our hallucinations?

Somehow I don't think we'd get a $174,000 a year salary, retirement and health benefits and all sorts of special perks and per diem cash for expenses. In fact, I'd expect to be committed.

Keep in mind, his 'supervisors' who do his 'performance evaluation' support those same delusions. As was mentioned above, the residents of his district are the reddest of the red, the salt of the earth, you know- morons. Essentially, he's doing exactly the job he was hired for.

The reports were written, it's just that they didn't/don't have any basis in fact.

/It's rather like investigating the Elvis/Bigfoot/Batboy love triangle based on that bastion of journalistic integrity, the National Enquirer.

2012-07-17 12:45:38 PM

Dimensio: What proposed legislation, opposed by the National Rifle Association, would have enabled tracking of the firearms?

The database tracking all firearms by serial number. The NRA, through the GOP, killed it. The Federal government is not allowed to build a database, so there is no way to reference these weapons.

By the ongoing high level of derp. I'd say Issa lost no retards to F&F.

It's not even that, the reports simply said that some cabinet members said that they may be willing to fundraise for super pacs; none of the reports said that any of them ever did.

So, yeah, it's more like taking the Enquirer headline: "Elvis seen snogging Bigfoot" and concluding that Bigfoot gave birth to Batboy and now we need to subpoena Elvis' DNA for a paternity test.

2012-07-17 12:51:09 PM
You mean his keen investigational strategy of "Well, just look at him. You know he's guilty of something," didn't pay off?

2012-07-17 12:51:21 PM

madgonad: Dimensio: What proposed legislation, opposed by the National Rifle Association, would have enabled tracking of the firearms?

The database tracking all firearms by serial number. The NRA, through the GOP, killed it. The Federal government is not allowed to build a database, so there is no way to reference these weapons.

Serial numbers were largely a non-issue to F&F's operation. Having a database may have saved a bit of time, but that wasn't really what they were concerned with.

2012-07-17 12:51:23 PM

Dwight_Yeast: The reports were written, it's just that they didn't/don't have any basis in fact.

According to the article the reports only said that a few members of the cabinet expressed interest in supporting the super PACs, but then only one actually did so. It's not that the reports aren't factual, it's that he's apparently reading words that were never a part of those reports.

2012-07-17 12:51:49 PM
Holy farking crap...

One problem: according to recent reports, none of them have made any such appearances.

It cited "[r]ecent media reports indicate that Cabinet Secretaries are actively involved in fundraising for super PACs," mentioning a Daily Beast story from May as well as Politico stories from February and June. None of the stories cited actually contain any information about cabinet members actually fundraising on behalf of the super PAC.

And their answer is THIS?

In an email to TPM, Issa spokeswoman Becca Glover Watkins said the committee was aware of the Roll Call report when they sent the letter.

"Concerns and questions about the use of taxpayer funds supporting political travel have persisted through multiple administrations," Watkins said in a statement. "Rather than implementing meaningful changes to put these questions to rest, the current administration's actions have only enhanced concerns about abuses of taxpayer funds to further campaign interests. If the Obama Administration truly has nothing to hide then they should have no difficulty promptly providing all requested information."

In other words; Nothing found, but we're going to proceed exactly as if it had. "Well what about this thing here that says you have nothing?" ... "Well, we're aware of that, but we are sure that a lack of evidence actually IS evidence to the contrary."

What a bunch of farktards. How can you people on the Right support these morons yet still claim to have a freakin' brain?

2012-07-17 12:52:15 PM

what_now: What's his re-election campaign looking like?

Largely self-funded (Issa is the richest man in Congress) and also supported by the NRA. In a District with an R +14 registration advantage. He'll probably beat his opponent 2-1 without trying.

Not much point, Congressman: Congress has NO POWER to punish either ovomit OR his criminal-in-charge at the DOJ! What are you going to do? Send another letter? Have another vote? You can't arrest them, and you WON'T impeach the bastards! They will NEVER give-up the documents - because they KNOW what is in them! The very evidence you need to impeach! So they will hide and DESTROY all of that evidence long before you get a chance to see it! THEY don't CARE one iota about Brian Terry, or anyone else who has died from this program! And, now that the "Supreme" Court has SCREWED the entire nation, many of us who DO care will soon be DEAD, in PRISON or in other COUNTRIES! Because we will NOT buy any damned "Health Insurance" that we do NOT WANT and/or cannot afford, we will REFUSE to PAY any "Fines", and if/when the I.R.S. or ANYONE else tries too arrest us, we WILL FIGHT! TOO THE DEATH! America, as we have all known it, is DEAD! And YOU - our elected representatives - wielded the stake that was just driven through the heart of it! Thanks anyway.

Why, pray tell, does ANYBODY believe a goddamn thing this dipshiat brings up? Or any of the Republicans, in fact, considering their STATED, PRIMARY GOAL is to make Obama a one-term President at all costs. Have none of these farkwits ever read 'The Boy who Cried Wolf'?

Disapproval of FCC's Net Neutrality Regulations
Clean Water Cooperative Federalism Act
Cement Sector Regulatory Relief Act
Coal Residuals Reuse and Management Act
Farm Dust Regulation Prevention Act

You can't just call a bill allowing paint chips into the water a jobs bill. What if we reject the premise that allowing the job creators (may the continue to favor us) to do whatever they want to make money will result in increased jobs? Oops. Number of jobs bills passed: 0.

ghare: Restrictions on firearm purchases are a violation of the Second Amendment. The criminals in Mexico were going to get these guns anyway.

Really?

1st Amendment - Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

2nd Amendment - A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

There are hundreds of laws impacting the underlined portion of the Bill of Right, likewise there are laws impacting the bolded portion. Or are you one of the idiots people that think individuals have the right to keep and use any known weapon without any oversight?

I don't know, if the job creators (blessed be their name) were to erect lead statues of Reagan along the banks of the Mississippi, you would certainly get environmental problems but some of the people who vote against their (and the world's) economic interests would be removed from the gene pool.

2012-07-17 01:39:18 PM
So here's what I don't get. I understand that Congress has a role to play here as far as oversight. But it's really supposed to be related to the legislative process.

Shouldn't Congress be spending its time figuring out legislation to eliminate fundraising abuses / bribery in general?

Ah, but then, Republicans would have to be held to the same standards as Democrats, and that must be a scary thought.
