Rachel Maddow is weak. Shes skipping another key issue. This one is a bit more problematic to talk about.
From (2012-06-24) 'No American is dedicating as much of his money to defeat Obama as Adelson, the casino magnate who has made more money in the last three years than any other American.' So, what does he want?

Sheldon Adelson 2010: I am not Israeli. The uniform that I wore in the military, unfortunately, was not an Israeli uniform. It was an American uniform, although my wife was in the IDF and one of my daughters was in the IDF ... our two little boys, one of whom will be bar mitzvahed tomorrow, hopefully he'll come back-- his hobby is shooting -- and he'll come back and be a sniper for the IDF. [Video]

Gingrich on Adelson.
Koppel: So, if you win what does your billionaire patron Sheldon Adelson get out of it? Gingrich: Israel. That's the central value of his life [Link + Video]

People close to Mr. Adelson said that he wants to be certain about Mr. Romney's positions on key issues, including support for Israel against aggressors in the Middle East. Mr. Adelson has publicly criticized President Barack Obama's support of Israel as too weak.
Mr. Adelson has told friends that he intends to give at least $100 million to conservative causes and candidates this election cycle. He contributed some $250,000 to Republican Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, who just won against a labor union-forced recall election there. [link]

You're kidding, right? Unless they screw over other billionaires -- e.g. Bernie Madoff -- billionaires don't go to jail.

Point this out with as part of a public protest and you get the shiat beat out of you and hauled off to jail for "resisting arrest."

you know, we could get caught in the weeds of which issue adelson cares most about, but ultimately he's decided to purchase the american government to accomplish some very specific goals. i don't care if he's doing it to bring back firefly, private individuals should not be allowed to try and buy elections to benefit themselves like this. I thought we'd cleared that up with the fall of machine politics!

2012-07-17 12:49:39 PM
Sheldon's original explanation that he was doing it because he didn't think Obama was pro-Israel enough didn't hold water. The day America ever stops using it's veto power as a permanent member of the Security Council in order to prevent even the mildest of international criticisms of Israel that argument might have some credibility to it but as it stands, not so much.

So, old corrupt casino owner just wants to save his own wrinkly ass after all?

$100 million is small potatoes to this guy. I'd respect him if he spent that on scholarships or some other socially positive way. As it is, he's just a repulsive rich old man who has very little time left to live according to actuary tables. I wonder if you could make a bet on when he's going to kick the bucket? its funny. I was thinking of these exact terms.

The cognitive dissonance with not just Rachel, but anyone who took a sympathetic side with the Occupy movement on the difficulty of prosecuting the very wealthy is just too much.

Then, in order to do this, they have to weigh how the ideological motives of a very elderly person with deep emotional statements of ethnic connection as legacy is somehow less important.

Good luck with all of that.

For fifty years or so, our policy in the Middle East has been: what's good for Israel is good for us.

Since Obama took office, there has been a shift (ironically started under Bush) of moving to let regional powers solve their own conflicts, and taking us out of the role of World Police. Thus, China has been told that North Korea is its problem, not ours, and Israel has been made aware that they need to sort their own mess out and stop the saber rattling, as we will not back them up if they do something stupid viz Iran or Egypt.

Romney, on the other hand has suggested that dealing with Iranian "aggression" is not out of the question if he takes office.

Can't watch videos at work, but I might later.

Adelson is also an idiot if he is just trying to get someone in the WH that will listen to him. Gingrich was the wrong horse to bet on early if that was his goal. I could have told him Newt was unelectable back a year ago and saved him $20 million.

I don't see him going to jail over bribing Chinese officials (or for prostitution in his hotels, which I have also heard allegations of), but I believe his concern over fines related to it are real. He is also largely anti-union, having said old Democrats were with the union and he wanted to break the back of the union, consequently he had to break the back of the Democrats" back in the 90's.
