Electric fences have a low-level charge that will zap but won't kill whatever touches them

Mildly annoy the meth addicts, that'll learn em.

Since this is Arizona, it's only a matter of time before a story gets posted to fark about a guy purposefully putting his nuts up to one of these fences

Gotta feel sorry for Phoenix council member Bill Gates.

Everyone he meets probably comments on his name, and makes some variation of a standard joke. It must get extremely tiring.

Well, yeah, but...Imagine if you had a pacemaker, or something like that. Might turn into a real mess.

Hey people, there's this thing called awareness, yanno looking at your surroundings and such.

Oh, don't preach unto me, schmuckface. The farm I was on had the electrified wire on the back of a wooden fence. I was stoned, and wanted to look at the cows, for some reason. Touched the wire, and got lit up like a Christmas tree. The farm boys thought it was funny as hell. Wanted to turn them into fertilizer.

Umhmm, and marijuana is harmless.

Watt is the big problem here? It really ergs me when people put all this energy into a non-problem. Protecting your gold, joules, and other valuables in any you you can.

I grabbed a cattle fence once. Nothing. My first thought was a fleeting "Heh, it must not really be electric", followed by WHAM! I didn't realize it wasn't always 'on', but had a pulse every 3-4 seconds or so.

Lucky for me, my bladder was already empty because if it were full, it wouldn't have been for long.

My kid loves electric fences. When we visit any farm, it's always his first question. The farmers always think it's because he's scared, but he loves getting shocked. He's seriously weird.

Loves 9 volt batteries, too.

He'll probably end up a Fark headline someday.

You forgot to mention the step up transformer, 12V won't make it along miles of fence, let alone do anything to you if you touch it. Also the energized strand has to be isolted from the poles with plastic buffers or else your power just goes to ground and the first one that's not protected (maintaining miles of fence is such a joy).

Yeah, we had one around our backyard vegetable garden in suburban Massachusetts in the early 1980s. It wouldn't even have occurred to us that it might be illegal and we all got accidentally zapped a few times.

Nobody was upset except for a few rabbits and groundhogs deprived of salad.

Yep, I'm going to have to go with "nothing" to "very little" could go wrong. Been in electric fence country for years... worst I've ever had happen is got zapped by touching an aluminum fishing net to a wire while crossing a pasture. It was a good reminder it was there, and wasn't the worst injury incurred on that particular fishing trip.

I have an electric fence. It does wonders keeping deer from eating my garden.

Electric fences are still banned in Phoenix's residential areas.

I thought AZ was one of those "Dont Tred on Me" states. Where do they get off telling people they can't put up a fence on their own property? Crazy.

Anyway, I'm always looking for entertaining warning signs to hang on the fence.

Electric fences are great. I put one around my mother's cat yard, bottom and top. Hasn't been a breakout from Meowlcatraz since. The trick is to put the second line around the top.

I've seen solar powered electric fences that are effective for a few miles. Very, very low amperage. Around 5,000 volts IIRC

My dad had an electric fence around his horses. Very low voltage so not much of a shock if you touched them bare handed. Unless you were wearing a metal ring. One day I was trying to convince some little kid that it seriously wouldn't hurt, by conducting electricity through myself. So when he held my hand, he got a nasty shock. Whoops.

Fun fact: most states will not allow electried barbed wire. Just smooth wire is allowed. I guess it to keep animals from getting caught by the fence and getting zapped over and over.

One time I got zapped at my horse's boarding farm. I was leaning through the fence to check the water trough, and my head brushed against a wire. Damm near broke a tooth as my jaw clenched, but I felt better about myself for a couple fays after....

FTA:The Phoenix City Council this month lifted the city's 97-year ban on electric fences, allowing light- and heavy-zoned industrial properties to install them for security to keep out vandals, burglars or other intruders.

Electric fences are still banned in Phoenix's residential areas.

I would be one of those asking what was "the kid" doing climbing the electric fence in the first place? Would it be any difference than Mexican kid mauled to death by guard dogs after climbing fence?

Electiric fences are easily identified even without some sign teling you it will hurt you.

FTA:Phoenix property owners who put up an electric fence must get a permit and post a series of signs along the fence that warn passersby: "Danger, premises is protected with an electrified fence."

If somebody does get killed climbing an electric fence I would just have to chalk it up to Darwin.

At summer camp we used to dare each other to touch the electric fence. I did it at least once, maybe twice.

Did I miss the debate about what is more dangerous, voltage or amperage? I have never seen any forum topic on any board anywhere where everyone agreed about some electrical 'fact'.
