Lord pushed the Hammond-Leslie sound through Marshall amplification, creating a growling, heavy, mechanical sound that gave a rhythmic counterpoint to Blackmore's lead playing. It also allowed Lord to compete with Blackmore as a soloist, with an organ that sounded as heavy as a lead guitar. Said one reviewer, "many have tried to imitate [Lord's] style, and all failed."

Really sad, Purple was one of the few organ/synth heavy bands that I liked.

Some of the other members of Purple had, uh, reputations, but I don't think I ever heard a bad word about Jon Lord, and man could he tear up the Hammond.

Gillan said somewhere (I forget where I read it) that he just wrote the lyrics for things off the cuff in five minutes while totally wasted. Or made them up as he went along on first singthrough. While totally wasted. Then he'd have trouble remembering them so would make up some new ones. Eventually one version would get recorded, then he'd have to make a special effort to remember those (and sometimes forget them in concert).

Most old Purple lyrics are gibberish and it's best not think too much about 'em, just enjoy the music. Smoke on the Water is unusually coherent!

Deep Puprle was one of my earliest introductions to metal - long, long before the Loudness War, when metal was actually musical. Dammitsomuch, rock doesn't have to be compressed to death to farking ROCK. Case in point: Space Truckin' on the Made in Japan album, which has something that's missing from so much newer stuff: dynamics. Yes, they actually could play quietly just as well as they could play loud.

Very sad, Machine Head was my first rock album, and Jon Lord gave me hope on the organ my parents were making me take lessons on, one day I hooked up a borrowed Marshall amp and things were never the same again at home!

Eventually Dad came around to admitting Jon Lord was one hell of an organist, a real reach if you knew my Dad.

Listening to the live version of "Lazy" from '73 as I type. Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin were my introduction to artistically crafted rock. John Lord was one of the greats. Saw DP at the Tacoma Dome back in '84, great show through my weed got taken by security =(

Don't know how many times I played "Made in Japan" in my carefree teenage years. A lot.

It's in many ways the quintessential live album. Blows most of the studio versions straight to Hell.


Ian Gillan=most badass vocalist of the early 70s. Yes, I know everyone worshiped Robert Planet.

My dad is a huge prog freak, so I grew up listening to Deep Purple, PFM, ELP, Yes.... of course I returned the favor later on and turned him on to Dream Theater. Seeing Purple play was one of my life's desires since I first heard Highway Star. I finally saw Deep Purple a few years ago after Blackmore left. Steve Morse was filling in for him. Jon, of course, rocked the place. Steve wasn't too bad either (ironic grin goes here). I called my dad today, who was pretty devastated by the news. He said he was going to watch Jon's "Concerto for Group and Orchestra" tonight.

The opening act sucked, but unless your band's name is Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin, it's a pretty good chance you're not going to be able to compare.

Remember hearing Hush when it came out. No one had ever heard organ wail like that before . Their follow up hit single was Kentucky Woman, written by Neil Diamond. Don't get the Zep comparisons, Richie could play rings around Page, on a bad day.

My first concert, Boston Garden, 1969. Wow I'm old.

Sad news indeed. DP was always a favourite for me as a young guy learning to play guitar. I played the songs from In Rock daily (sorry mom) and ended up appreciating all of the instruments involved as I learned. Nobody could compare with Jon. He was the guitar players keyboard player. On Youtube, there is a series of interviews with him talking about DP and how he supported Blackmore's playing (so modest). Brilliant guy.

For those of you lamenting your past slipping away, one dead rocker at a time, I'd advise you to make your way to Las Vegas on August 5th for a show that will knock your old grey dicks in the dirt:

Leslie West (Mountain)
Kim Simmonds (Savoy Brown)

These are all contemporaries of Lord and some of them might be next on obit page. See them while you can. I just bought the last front-row ticket available, so enjoy staring at the back of my head.

The show is at the Perl Theater in the Palms Casino. I'm calling it the "Still Alive and Well, but the day isn't over yet" tour.

Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull were the soundtracks to my childhood years in the early 1970's, thanks to the miracle of eight track tape and an uncle who turned me on to them.

Saw Deep Purple, my first rock concert ever, during their "Perfect Strangers" comeback tour, with the original line-up, reuniting core members, including Jon Lord (who performed a show-stopping Hammond B-3 solo during the into of "Lazy") at Vancouver's Pacific Coliseum in 1984. I've been suffering tinnitus in my right ear drum ever since.

Blackmoore should get more mention than he does as one of the all-time greats. His work with Deep Purple and Rainbow is some of my favorite music. Stargazer is one of my favorite metal songs ever.

I grew up listening to them. I hate seeing the greats go. Lord was my favorite part of Deep Purple. Need to listen to Lazy again.

When I first started listening to the Purple all my friends started talking about Smoke, Highway Star, and Black Knight...the first one I got to turn them on to that they had skipped was Lazy. Freakin awesome tune.

My fave song is Space Truckin' though...followed by Lazy.
