And yet, to a lot of people, he's "Juno's Dad" or "The Farmer's Insurance Ads Guy".

He's awesome, but he's better known for his roles than his name, and for a lot of people, he's OH! HIM!

I saw him in a Newark airport one time. I said to my wife, "Look it's that guy from the Spiderman movie." She looked at him for a good minute and was like, "Who?" I then gave her like five other references. Still, no clue. And no I didn't know his name. But he's awesome.

Yep. Aside from the CSB above, I have a rule not to approach actors, which typically comes into conflict with my wife, because when my wife wants to meet an actor or actress it's going to happen whether I like it or not. And I'm probably going to be there to take the picture.

Anyway if there was a guy I'd want to meet in person and say "I like your work" it would probably be Simmons. He's got more range than most.

"Those of you who volunteered to be injected with praying mantis DNA, I've got some good news and some bad news. Bad news is we're postponing those tests indefinitely. Good news is we've got a much better test for you: fighting an army of mantis men. Pick up a rifle and follow the yellow line. You'll know when the test starts."

Gary Cole? Well known for his role in Office Space

I disagree - I would argue that it is for being the actor that everybody recognizes, and gets plenty of work, but nobody knows who the hell he is. Actors widely recognized for one single famous role, but who are otherwise obscure may be a bit rarer than long time character and support actors, but no reason to disqualify them automatically. Shawn Wallace, for example. - extremely well and widely known for one role, recognized by every one, but not many people know his name

Brion James 1949-1999

Hah, yeah. There are, in my opinion, many better choices for this list. Unfortunately, many of them are dead, so it makes sense to leave them off, I suppose. But still, maybe I'm just getting old when I think that Clancy Brown s a better choice than half the guys on that list

The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Twilight Zone, Dragnet, All in the Family... he was everywhere in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Since he was born in 1884, his TV career didn't start until he was in his late-60s.

And no disrespect to That Guy's, because most of 'em are far more awesome than their lack of name recognition indicates. (Looking at you, Fichtner) But Gary Cole was Bill farking Lumberg! He freakin owned Mike Brady in the BB Reboot movies (seriously...mocking while simultaneously paying homage to pop culture's greatest pontificator on the pointless was no small feat.)

And is it just me, or does the pic of Ray Wise look like he wants to jump through the pic and eat your skull?

Lest we also forget his role in "Pineapple Express" or "Talladega Nights"? I also rewatched "Arrested Development" and he plays a CIA agent in the next to last episode.

Sybarite: I understand most of those, but I was surprised to see and Fred Ward on the list. I thought everyone knew who they were.

Gary Cole is a great actor. He can do comedy, action, drama. The best actors are what they call "character actors" as opposed to movie stars who just play themselves all the time.

I'm really glad William Fintchner made the list. He was outstanding on Prison Break.

Titus Welliver could play Rahm Emmanuel.

And I'll always know Bruce McGill as God, who just happens to enjoy being the bartender of a miners' saloon in 1950s Cokeburg, Pennsylvania.

He's awesome, but he's better known for his roles than his name, and for a lot of people, he's OH! HIM!

The Farmer's Insurance cute girl is Jennifer Baxter. I think she'll be the next breakout star for her own Farmer's Insurance commercial.

Most of this list isn't really "that guy" if you've watched any movies or shows from the past 5-6 years. Seriously, some of them have major recurring character roles in some of the biggest tv shows from 2005-present. You cannot consider them a "that guy" when they are that important to the plot line of several shows over the course of just a few years.

Well, I take that back. You can consider them a "that guy" after all that. But only if your opinion is flawed.

Ferris Beuller's arch nemesis Jeffrey Jones deserves a mention.

Alright, "he was a long running recurring character on Law and Order" is more appropriate since you are correct that every actor in New York was on L&O.

No, Hickey died three years before Requiem for a Dream came out. He was nominated for an Oscar for playing Don Corrado Prizzi in Prizzi's Honour, was the senile & deaf old Uncle Lewis in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, the self-described failure in the bar near the end of the original The Producers when Max & Leo toast what they think is their failed production ("To failure!" "To failure!" "Oh, thank you."), Old Man Beckersted in One Crazy Summer and many many more. While starting in the 1950s, he worked constantly in the 80s and 90s.

Late 60's/early 70's TV, if you needed a guy who was either a) a hopeless drunk on the edge of DTs or b) on the verge of a nervous breakdown, this was That Guy:

which is why he was PERFECT as Decker.

Somebody mentioned Burt Mustin being on Dragnet a couple of times...well....NObody appeared on Dragnet just once. Keith Gordon
unrealitymag.com
You couldn't watch a movie in the mid-80s without seeing him playing an emotionally intense dork. He was in practically everything from 1979 until 1991. Carrie, Back to School, The Legend of Billy Jean, Dressed to Kill. He's now mostly a director, and apparently in high demand.

Meanwhile, the go-to guy for playing a goofus in the mid-80s was Tom Villard.

UnderwaterAlly: Most of this list isn't really "that guy" if you've watched any movies or shows from the past 5-6 years. Seriously, some of them have major recurring character roles in some of the biggest tv shows from 2005-present. You cannot consider them a "that guy" when they are that important to the plot line of several shows over the course of just a few years.

No, you're wrong. You're wrong on the internet, even. The whole point of a that guy is they appear so frequently in big projects/roles that everyone recognises their face and can name things they've been in, but are never the lead and are never so important or famous that people bother to learn or remember their name. So they just get referred to as "that guy who plays..."

For example, JK Simmons. Name is news to me, and I will soon forget it. Yes I will recognise his FACE, but I would never have been able to put a name to the face or a face to the name. And that's probably true for the vast majority of people who watch anything he's in.

Titus Welliver though... unf! How can you not know his name? It's as awesome as he is. TITUS!

Every few years or so I go check out a few websites that have a list of all the celebrities who are Scientologists. Some are categorized as "known" or "suspected" and i remember being slightly crushed to find many people on the list. Others that killed me was Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson. She had (at that time) given the single largest donation to the Church, a $10 million one.

He's still a good actor, but i can't separate the taint from him anymore. I laughed at his criminal idiot character on My Name Is Earl as one of the more redeeming side-characters. That show by and large was mediocre but Ribisi was quite funny in it. Also Jason Lee is a Scientologist.

My favorite Miami Vice episode, hands down.

That was a damn good one, but the ones centring around Castillo were also awesome, like the two-parter "Golden Triangle", or "Bushido" in which his old KGB nemesis (Dean Stockwell) was trying to get his Japanese wife & kid into hiding. Castillo, however, was barely at all in the 2-our second season opener, "Prodigal Son" which was great even without him -- in no small part due to the all-star cast (Penn Jillette, creepy old Julian Beck with a very memorable monologue, Gene Simmons, Charles S. Dutton, Peter Allen, Luis Guzmán, Anthony Heald, Pam Grier, et al.)

Colm Meaney

Hm, Colm Meaney might be one of those asterisks....has he BEEN in anything that isn't sci-fi/fantasy?

Okay I kid, obviously IMDB tells his story. But, is he really a "that guy"? It seems to me you'd recognize him from Star Trek, in which case you'd -probably- know his name as he headlined on DS9 and was a big B-cast guy on TNG, or, you wouldn't recognize him at all. Tricky...

I also think Fred Thompson lost "thatguy" status when he ran for president. He would then fall into that same category, you either know who he is, or you don't.

Oohh....when is the politics tab getting its list of "that guy"?

Yes, lots. Often playing a mick, of course. One of Tommy Lee Jones' men in Under Siege; spoiler: he gets killed by a guy who's just a cook; Con Air as the guy who keeps pointing out what a hippy dipshait John Cusack is, and lots more. His CV on IMDb goes on and on and on.

He was also Gene Hunt in the first American pilot for Life on Mars (set in L.A., not NYC). He was certainly more age appropriate than Harvey Keitel, and is a whole lot more like Philip Glenister than Keitel was.

FirstNationalBastard: I dunno... five years on Law and Order kind of kills the whole "that guy" thing, IMO.

Cave JK Simmons was on L&O for much longer than that.

Of course, there's no way in hell I'd consider him "That guy," but we're going by TFA's standards, not mine.

He was also hilarious as the Elvis-worshipping Dad in The Commitments (which also starred a young, very hot Andrea Corr).
