I didn't remember covering magnets in engineering school (I wasn't EE), so I went back and looked up some of the equations to see if there is an easy way to tell if this would work or not. Measuring the force of an electromagnet seems straightforward enough, but translating that into whether or not it would erase a hard drive from 40 feet gets difficult.

It sounds like a fun project for them - they could rig up the same system and see if it works. Otherwise, maybe some fark braniacs can help with the math.

I predict busted. For one the 3.5 magnet would break the axle on the truck they used.

It would still be a fun episode.

I'd like to see them test if "because I say so" really does ensure that no evidence exists that could be used to trace the vehicle back to Walt.

Or even better. Stay out of BB threads until you find the time to watch that one episode.

I'm still in season three. So far I know what happens to Gus Kring because stupid motherfarkers have posted the picture of him and now I know there is a magnetic truck. What's next? Gonna tell me what Walter Jr is having for breakfast in S5 Ep1?

I think the Cayman bank account number on the picture, which was only exposed as evidence because of his magnet idea, will probably come back to bite him in the ass faster. Once the feds get on those bank accounts the cartel is going to come looking for whoever ruined their money parade.

But I DO like the idea that the writers left the option open that the magnet didn't work at all.

SPOILER ALERT:

Which he didn't even eat.

I bet he only went into Denny's and ordered breakfast out of some ritual in honor of Walt Jr being killed. Every day he must find a large breakfast and leave it untouched for the spirit of Jr. That's what we're working towards. Jr's the first to get it as the cartel closes in.

What I will say about this show is that most people think Walter White is a real bad ass. Truth be told, he is a farking horrible person, a truly reprehensible human being. It is hard to root for a guy who has done the things he has done so far as I have seen halfway through season three.

SPOILER: What he did, or actually didn't do to Jane was farking wrong. And the bit with the tequila and Walter Jr by the pool was farking cruel.

The guy's a dick.

I still watch.

I'm not sure anyone can really root for him anymore. If I had any criticism about the season opener it was that they made Walt TOO evil. It's like the chemistry teacher guy is gone entirely now. You could almost see Skyler's skin crawl when he hugged her.

If you're talking about that part about Walt Jr. being killed, that's speculation, not spoiler. All we know is a much hairier Walt Sr. will one day buy a wicked machine gun at a Denny's.

Bryan Cranston is one of the best working actors today. This is a guy who played Maclom's dad on Malcom in the Middle and the dentist on Seinfeld - talk about range!!! He kills it on this show. You truly can't even root for him any more because he does such a great job at being completely evil now.

Dennis Quaid used a magnet to ruin a video tape in a police evidence room in The Big Easy (1986).

Step 1- Throw heavy magnet through shop window as an act of vandalism

Step 2- Bribe evidence room cop to place magnet next to incriminating video tape

Step3- Profit

2012-07-16 01:34:34 PM
I'm no expert and I haven't done the math (implying that I even remember how, ha!) but it seems to me that you would need a prohibitively powerful magnetic field. The inverse square law applies, and a field that can erase a drive at 40 feet could probably do some nasty things to a human body at two or three feet.

That one quick shot of the Bank of Cayman paper ... that was terrific. They didn't dwell on it, and if you looked away (at your laptop or something), you'd miss it. I love stuff like that.

God, I love BB.

And if you're in this thread and you haven't caught up with the episodes, STFU and GTFO.

It was "Donny's." Did you see the sign on the front of the restaurant when he walked out to the car? Denny's was next door. Kinda funny how they did that. He went to the discount version of Denny's, then left a $100 tip.

You probably shouldn't click on a thread about something that you don't want spoilers to.

The mere existence of e "magnetic truck" in the headline isn't really spoiling anything.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to use a HERF or EM device like a flux compression generator (basically a poor man's EMP). They're technologies from the mid 70s, so it should be pretty easy for a couple of scientists to build, and wouldn't require a ridiculous plot about some monster magnet. Bonus: the cop station may need to replace...a few things.

"Hi guys. I'm not up to date on the show you're talking about, and since the headline is about something I clearly haven't watched yet, I clicked on it and the comments so I could come in here and biatch about you spoiling everything for me. I was hoping for a huge EMP, but I think that might be technically harder to pull off than the magnet without killing people.

And absolutely nothing was spoiled for you. The "crazy magnetic truck" isn't some sort of giant plot twist, reveal, or anything. Knowing about its existence will do absolutely nothing to prevent you from "being immersed in the story."

Walt Jr. is also in the episode. Knowing this is also not a spoiler.

SPOILER: He *doesn't* eat breakfast in this episode!
