I guess that's an improvement over not allowing athletes or volunteers to use social media at all... How long is the Olympics going to be able to continue if the media contracts and advertizing revenues that drive the whole thing start to dry up? On the other hand, I wouldn't dare underestimate the creativity of corporate interests in finding new ways to enclose and capitalize on previously public goods.

The biatching has already been done. Athletes and volunteers are not allowed to announce "breaking news" on social media. And breaking news definitely includes results. Rest assured, if athletes break this rule, they'll be punished. Meanwhile, the IOC members laugh all the way to the bank with the kickbacks they've received from writing up these rules to favor their corporate sponsors.

Obvious. Also, I'd have to look it up and verify, but I think there are rules about whether athletes can wear equipment that displays the logos of companies that are not officially sanctioned Olympic sponsors, even if that company sponsors the particular athlete. If I were an Olympian, I'd be upset that the IOC was using my performance to bring in money for itself and its sponsors while preventing me from using my own performance to do the same for myself during the event.

I keep seeing billboards and TV ads from the USOC, asking for donations to support the US olympic team, because "unlike other countries, they don't get any government money." Of course, no one mentions the corporate donations to the USOC, the various sport organizations, and the sponsorship contracts for some of the best athletes. (and here's the USOC's own webpage thanking corporate sponsors for their support: Link . And yet, they have the balls to take a whiny stance and beg for private donations to help support a team competing as representatives of the country? And then some jizzmoppers in government have the balls to complain when the US uses money they've sourced privately to engage in a private contract with a private corporation that happens to have outsourced its apparel production to China? It's just a clusterfark of early 20th century nationalism operating in the neoliberal 21st century.

Let's make this whole thing more open and honest. Do away with national teams and let corporations build their own teams. It'll be like the company softball team, but with world-class athletes competing for the glory of their financiers. fark America, and China, and Russia, and Saudi Arabia (congrats for finding two women with Saudi passports to compete on behalf of all the women in your country who are not allowed to play sports in public though, that's great stuff right there, a real human rights success story).
