I guess they wanted a teacher who could relate to the students.

Skyred: It is racist, i don't think its appropriate to have it as mandatory reading in schools.
While I'm hating on it, I'd also like to throw out any other book that addresses racism, such as To Kill a Mockingbird.

Parents should teach their kids ethics and values, not schools.

Get rid of Animal Farm too, its anti communist propoganda

Blackanese. Insert bullet train joke here.

Why am I imagining tracks and train stations built sideways?

Natalie Holloway = wholesome, all-american white girl, still in the media five years after her disappearance

Naiya Galloway = ethnically ambiguous name, probably some kind of Afro-brown person, will be forgotten by tomorrow

Right, but what if its really Natalie Holloway who ran away, assumed a new identity, and chose a name that very nearly rhymes with her old name.

Huck Finn isn't just about racism. I don't have a degree in English, I screwed around in every English class I took, and even I know that if all you take away from Huck Finn is that it's about racism you missed the farking point.

The book is really more about hypocrisy than racism. A bunch of Christian white slave owners go to church, learn about how they must love one another and be kind to their fellow man, and then head home and beat their slaves.

But no, just look at the slave owners and racism in the book and let that blind you. Ignore the story about the boy who braves the wild to free a slave, because that might force you off your soap box.

There was a similar complaint about his novel Puddin'head Wilson. The message - that the only difference between a slave and a free person is how they are treated by society - is racist?!?!?

Lsherm: Sounds like this woman has issues beyond just the book. Unfortunately, this court case is just going to further her paranoia about being oppressed.

she clearly suffers from PVS (Perpetual Victim Syndrome).

EnviroDude: BunkoSquad: EnviroDude: If a fiction author uses the "nword" repeatedly in his/her works, does that make the work racist? The author? If the author records an audiobook and reads the word, does that make him/her racist?

If I say "no" will you then ask why Chris Rock is allowed to say it and you're not?

I was specifically thinking of the LA police officer that was excoriated on the stand. He had denied using the Nword. Prosecution found his audiobook taped interview with someone else who was writing a screenplay and were able to discredit his entire testimony because he was racist committing perjury.

In 1968 my 6th Grade English teacher read us Huckleberry Finn cover to cover. He read to us every Friday afternoon. Even more amazing is that our school system had only been desegregated for 6 years at this point and there had been race riots in the streets within the last 5. The interesting part was that on one Friday one of the black kids fathers showed up to listen to what was being read (parents were always welcome). As he was walking out with his son at the end of the day he was quietly explaining to his son that it was like that "back then" and that a lot of progress had been made but his soon needed to be aware of how far things had come. Now the school system would think that time spent like that could be better spent of "Standards of Learning" tests or some such BS.

Preferably in a way that also makes all literature racist.

Ever notice how all "books" use black ink stamped onto white pages?

FTFA: Galloway allegedly announced to a classroom full of students in October that Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" was a racist book
The next day, she was on a school bus with students when she allegedly renewed her criticism of the book as "racist,"
She also allegedly tried to derail a math teacher's presentation by telling the students how she had once been the victim of racism. In addition, she was accused of suggesting to at least one of the students that the math teacher was a racist.

She's not playing with a full deck.
Only has one card.
