The driver, who was not identified, was unable to produce a driver's license and was issued a summons for being an unlicensed driver...

Guess who's insurance isn't going to cover a loss caused by an unlicensed driver. Good luck collecting that scratch from your unlicensed buddy, pal.

Ambulance EMTs took the driver, who was complaining of chest pain, to a local area hospital, reports said.

Quickest way to get out of an awkward situation.

^^^^THIS^^^^

I can only imagine the conversation between these two former friends when owner is told this.
Probably something like "dude, you owe me like 60K, fork it ova..."
(ex friend)"are you outta your farking mind? I do not haz that kinda scratch!"

Maybe things get all punchy/kicky/stabby after that.

/will watch for followup headlines of a beating/death

The driver complains of chest pains after launching one of the good fellas ride into the drink? Can't produce a license? Sounds like a real winner there.

I'm sure the owner of the BMW and his "friend" will work it out. The owner will just go make his friend stand where the car was, in cement shoes, as a reminder to not be a douchebag.

Lets see how long it takes for my phone to start ringing off the hook.

My insurance pays if I lend my car to an unlicensed driver. I bet they wouldn't renew after paying the total loss. They don't have to take me (even under assigned risk) if I habitually let unlicensed drivers use my car.

Anybody trying to use any of the BMW X series SUVs on a boat ramp isn't very bright to begin with, so this sort of thing ought to be viewed as something of an inevitability.

/ the BMW X3/5: because nobody in America actually drives an SUV anywhere but dry pavement anyway

Yes, for example:
"Saturday as his friend slowly backed the vehicle, which had to a boat trailer attached, down the ramp..."

Rather archaic usage, which into the story had Hack written.

I drove a 1980 Mercury Bobcat (fancy Pinto) into a river once. Completely submerged for about an hour until a tow truck came. We towed it, drained and flushed all the fluids - started first time and ran for another 2 years until I sold it. Smelled like crap and the windows fogged up on the inside when it was hot - but ran fine.

unless he has a license and just didn't have it with him, in states that make you have proof of insurance if you don't carry it with you and get pulled over you have a certain amount of time to prove that you do have it.

/prob not quite the same since the police can look up license stuff on their computers usually

True. I was at the lake last weekend and was entertained by the "conversation" between the wife backing the trailer down the ramp and the husband in the boat. Apparently she had never backed their SUV up more than 10 feet in a straight line (much less with a trailer attached) and he had never put a boat on a trailer before but that did not keep either one from telling the other how to do it.

Were you raped by a BMW as a child?

I just don't get how owning a particular car can "turn you into" an asshole. I've wanted an E36 M3 since I was about 12, and I just bought one for myself this past month. I actually go out of my way to dispel the "BMW Drivers are assholes" perception by giving people space, letting them merge, not honking when they don't signal, don't tailgate in the left lane, etc.

So, just because it's a BMW, I deserve whatever misfortune befalls me and my dream car? The one I saved for months and months for, the one I'll be paying for in wife karma for a decade, the one that makes me happier when I'm driving than I have been in years? I "deserve" misfortune for this?

Why?

Tell me why. Really. I want to see a reason why I "deserve" to get T-boned in an intersection, or have someone steal my car and drive it into a lake, or get carjacked. Explain it to me, so that my pool of knowledge about the subject is increased.

Sweet jesus, the attitude that because someone owns a particular product, that product defines them as a person, is asinine. What the hell is wrong with you?

You know what? Anyone who drives anything with an LS1 is a flag-wavin', mullet-havin', meth-smokin, toothless redneck hillbilly whose idols are the Duke boys and the Bandit.

Yeah, you BECAME that when you bought your stupid ass firebird. You could have gone to Harvard, and have an EE PhD from MIT, but fark dude, as soon as you signed that firebird title, your hair just couldn't hold itself back, and the itch for meth just grabbed ya and never let go. I've seen it happen.

Of course, you'll just read this post, tl;dr it and say "See? Told you they were dicks. Now hold my beer and watch this, y'all."

amindtat: In my neck of the Penn's Woods it seems like all the douche bags drive Acuras, but that's just my observation.

Well, if they're driving Acuras they're probably just asleep at the wheel.

'round these parts there's three makes/models you know are going to be trouble when you see them on the move:

1. Anything BMW
2. The Honda Odyssey (seriously, wtf is up with these people? Are they extremely angry they drive a minivan?)
3. Any Subaru in bad weather

It doesn't hurt to keep an eye on Honda Accord drivers either.

2012-07-16 02:34:27 PM

grinding_journalist: Tell me why. Really.

Ric Romero, moonlighting as an automotive journalist says: "Sometimes people develop a bad image associated with symbols such as brand names or badges based on poor experiences they've had with those symbols in the past".

And, yea, the 3 series is pretty much the worst. Maybe less so the M group, but I'll give you my theory on the 3 series. Unlike other entry-level luxury, the 3 series is designed primarily as a machine aimed at providing superior driving characteristics. Unlike its competitors which focus more on comfort, it is designed to be firmer, quicker, and more performance-oriented. As a result, stupid asshole young men who come into a small amount of money gravitate toward the BMW 3 series, particularly the coupe. Those people tend to drive like assholes no matter what they're in, but they really stand out in the BMW 3xx because they can go even faster and drive even stupider than in many other cars at or below that price.

That's my theory, happy?

2012-07-16 02:55:12 PM

Splinshints: That's my theory, happy?

Oh, I agree- my question (the "why") was why he thought BMW drivers "deserve" (unequivocally) to have bad things happen to them. I totally accept that a particular mindset can be drawn to car- but even in your example, those people were almost certainly assholes BEFORE they bought their 3.

I'm just a couple cuts above broke-ass college student, I've worked very, very hard to get where I am and have what I have, and it irks me having someone insist that I've just become a colossal ass for purchasing a car I've wanted for about as long as I've liked cars.

By his logic, if someone without the means to buy one WON a BMW somehow, they'd "deserve" to have it destroyed or taken from them, just because it's a BMW. Lolwut?
