Because they vote billions of dollars of mandatory spending into their budget and make getting the money to pay for it more difficult than pulling teeth?

California is like a country unto itself; we have lots of rednecks here. There are lots of conservative strongholds here; it's why we can't raise taxes to pay for the propositions we always seem to vote in (need majority for to spend the money, need 2/3 majority to raise taxes).

Unless you're 50 or less miles from the coast, the rest of California is a red state.

It's just that most of the people live closer to the coast, so that's what makes California blue as a whole.

"More than 3,500 tubers--many with floating coolers stocked with beer--turned out for the second annual event on Saturday, officials said. "

Why did so many people bring potatoes?

2012-07-16 02:04:29 AM
I don't understand why there are police and firefighters at this event. If people want to risk their lives/health by fighting and rafting down the river while drunk, then let them. However, it shouldn't cost the taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for any rescue/control costs.

Wouldn't it be more entertaining to see a bunch of rednecks kill each other off?

I would support splitting the state in twain. We could have North California be everything north of Orange County, and Alta Baja California be everything from Orange County to Mexico.

More like split it along the coast. So everything within a certain distance of the coast is one state and everything else is some other state. That would almost make the coastal state completely blue and the rest completely red, although I'm aware there are still some coastal counties that are Red like Orange County due to the rich people, but for the most part, the coast is fairly progressive. Even the people of OC are progressive socially.

East of Sacramento, California might as well be one of the less cosmopolitan sections of Idaho. Indeed, there are lots of rednecks, but the people in the video look more like community college students--the folks who partied too much and couldn't get organized to get the hell out of Sacramento and move to the Bay Area, LA, or the Pacific Northwest.

Sacramento, how I do not miss thee.

(and I'm sure it doesn't miss me either.)

I just got back from NC. Went down the French Broad river in a canoe. Every damn floating party we came across had at least one inner-tube dedicated to their cooler of booze. And most folks were lit up like a Xmas tree. So this is hardly happening in CA, only.

Of course, we have a lot more people here in CA than NC and that... well that leads to problems. But trust me, you put enough of those pasty folks I saw on the NC river together and it would turn into a redneck Armageddon. With beer. Lots and lots of cold, delicious beer.

That idea has merit, but wildfires and water control would be a nightmare. The inland state would be a Mad Max nightmare, a total no man's land controlled by the Mexican Mafia. Detroit would look habitable by comparison.

Actually, that sounds awesome. Bring it on.

Dammit, why are conservatives always able to stop us from paying our bills, but never stop us from spending? Then they brag about starving the beast. My ass. Starving the beast by sucking on its teat is more like it.

We're not a banana republic, and we aren't children. Let us pay for what we goddamn buy. Unless your cunning plan is to discredit the United States and make us look like a bunch of irresponsible fools like Greece. Is that the conservative end game? Destroying America's credibility so much that nobody even trusts us enough to lend us money?

Welll, ok. But that's just in NC! We have good beer here in CA. If the kids in this article were drinking shiatty beer then the snob in me definitely disapproves!

Orange County gets a bad rap, but San Jose and San Diego are more populated and even more conservative. Plus everything north of SF along the coast is insanely conservative; you'd have to be an angry old codger to survive on that rugged coast for long.

Actually given the size of California, it could easily be split in two and still be among the largest states in population in the country. Remember California has a population of nearly 38m, so if it split into two states of 18-19m each, it would still be the 5th and 6th most populated state and would have a strong tax base to operate from. Most proposals are more Sourthern California/Northern California in their splits with the Northern Coastal and Inland going with the Bay Area and along the coastal counties to Los Angeles county to form the Northern state. Meanwhile Orange and San Diego along with the Inland Empire and Central Valley counties up to Reno go with the Southern State. Rough population numbers would be equal. Water rights would be tricky and there is no way in hell Washington would go along with it. However economically it isn't implausible as there would be profound economic output via agriculture in the southern state while the northern could rely on the tech and service industries to shine.

Los Angeles county nets a few million blue votes to the state tallies - take that away and you see a lot of measures and state-wide offices swing red.

San Diego has its own east-west divide: The city proper and most of the coastal communities tend moderate to liberal, but once you go inland, you get the bat-shiattiest members of the John Birch society of anywhere in America.

What the hell are you talking about? SJ is not conservative and never goes red while everything north of SF is hippie central. Mendocino and Humboldt are more conservative to you than the OC? San Jose is def not conservative, Santa Clara county is solidly blue while OC is solidly red.

I work at the raft rental agency that the majority of these tards went through (all the yellow rafts are ours), and let me tell you, the pickup point for our raft (River Bend Park, where the girl was reporting from) was absolute farking pandemonium from probably two until six.
I left River Bend probably a half hour before the riot on the shore, but when I was there the shore looked like a farking hurricane came through. Rafts, oars, vests, ton of garbage, and random unconscious assholes littered everywhere. Douchebags like that make me think a nanny/police state might not be such a bad idea, since they've already proven they're incapable of handling themselves like adults.
Still love my job though.
