The End Is Nigh. How long can the White family survive?

Oh, okay, I thought this was a super racist political thread at first.

I won't be around the computer to comment during tonight's episode, but I believe that the season premiere has racked up 98% on Metacritic.

That's unheard of. This is going to be AWESOME.

My prediction: Walt dies in the first five minutes, and the rest of the series focuses on his son taking up the mantle. They'll retitle it as "Bad Breakfast".

A few years back my lady friend was telling me about Breaking Bad and she had the first season on dvd. I was reluctant and thought a show about meth was not anything I would like. By the end of the first season I was hooked.

The subject matter was about the last thing that interested me also, but then I saw the first three seasons on Netfix and watched them all and then got the fourth season on Amazon. Best show ever. The bad thing is that now it seems like everything else is lame in comparison. I'm not even that interested in Dexter when it starts back up.

To be fair, Dexter has gone downhill pretty hard on its own since the Trinity Killer.

Breaking Bad is not worthy of all this hype. Daily Breaking Bad threads on fark with the same people saying the same things.. its overhyped. Over hype ruins shiat. Its a great show but unless it ends better than The Shield, which is nearly impossible then it'll be #3 below The Wire & The Shield on my list

Walt needs to threaten a judge and coerce innocent witnesses.
He needs to kill an actual innocent by his own hands.

Gale was not an innocent, he played the game like every other dealer/manufacturer.
Saul is not an innocent either.. just a criminal/lawyer so Walt threatening Saul is.. nothing really.

As for Andreas kid.. his mom is romantically connected/ is a junkie.
Plus it was a controlled poison. It was bad but not super evil bad.. since it happens to kids
more than one would think there.

He hasn't broke bad yet.

Uh-oh. It's on the same time as The News Room.
No biggie. HBO will repeat it 20 times this week.

Why do they have to do that?
You wait all day for a show that doesn't cater to people who eat their crayons, and they have to put 2 on, at the exact same time.

I'd like to find the program director, and mount his explosives filled head on the back of a tortoise.

Everyone says the subject matter was a turn-off before they got into the show, but that was one of the reasons I got into the show in the first place. Maybe it's because I grew up and live in NYC and don't know anyone affected by meth in any way. I've also always really enjoyed chemistry and was a big fan of Cranston from his time on Malcolm in the Middle, so I got into the show at the very beginning.

Agreed.
My take on it - after watching 1.5 seasons - is that it gives people a 'drama jolt' - Nice guy dying of cancer turns into bad-ass criminal and starts killing people.

Since most people have no drama in their lives they live vicariously through watching the show.

Which is great but it's still only a tv show, with writers working hard at manipulating the viewers.

Breaking Bad as it progresses each season has bettered the last, and that's tough to do considering where it has already gone.

It's okay - I'm turning pirate for this.

AMC needs to wake up. They want 75 cents from Dish instead of the 25 cents they've been getting? Hah - I'd gladly pay 4 times that to subscribe to their channel for a month, but they won't offer it to me directly.

I should send $10 to Bryan Cranston and tell him how I feel and instruct him to distribute it among the cast and crew however they should be paid. I know he doesn't need $10 from me and it would be a hassle for him to divvy it up, but it would make a statement about their current distribution model.

In fact, if I can figure out where to send it where he would actually see it, I might just do it. Anyone else who torrents it should too.

I guess I could send it directly to AMC. If enough people do it maybe it would get their attention.

ontariolightning: Breaking Bad is not worthy of all this hype. Daily Breaking Bad threads on fark with the same people saying the same things.. its overhyped. Over hype ruins shiat. Its a great show but unless it ends better than The Shield, which is nearly impossible then it'll be #3 below The Wire & The Shield on my list

I'm really sorry the large Samoan rapist with the gun keeps forcing you to read the threads. It must be difficult, between the abuse and ruining TV shows and the all the Spam & pineapple ring sandwiches...

2012-07-15 10:40:42 PM
I'm worried about this magnet thing. I gave the episode a +1 for showing where Walt got the ammonium nitrate for the bomb, but it's probably going to be cancelled by this. Magnetic fields from a dipole fall off on an inverse-cube power and modern hard drives have a rather high coercivity. Unless his device is sitting right on top of the laptop it's not going to do shiat. And what if Gus had an SSD in his laptop?

(oh COME ON! For fark's sake! Cue a few dozen more Morbo pics.)

Exactly. Card access doors always have a key override. Although, they generally wouldn't give a key for it out to anyone aside from a couple of supervisors, since it takes away the ability to document who is accessing the room.

Regarding the magnet thing.... is it *possible* the showrunners are aware of the reality of it, and that will actually come back to haunt the crew them later? Because I imagine a magnet like that could mess up a computer pretty well, even if it doesn't erase the harddrive.

I think we should maintain our faith for now.

It's not a plot hole. Or do you seriously think an overpowered industrial magnet designed for lifting CARS wouldn't blank a laptop hard drive?

I know the "magnets kill hard drives" thing is exploited in fiction, when in fact data is often recoverable. However, that usually applies to people using fridge magnets or home-use ones, not gigantic ones that are powered by over three dozen car batteries.

In that case, realism dictates that the data would almost certainly be unrecoverable.

I have no idea why anyone responds to anything that the Canadian shaped pile of fail posts about ANY topic, but regardless of the thread (TV, politics, hockey) he is invariably wrong about it. Even if he was a douchebag that just always seems to be wrong through random chance, he would still be right approximately half the time due to the volume of posts that he makes. No, being 100% wrong 100% of the time suggests that he has to know what the correct and/or non douchebag thing to say is and then he goes with the exact opposite.

If I was in charge of the show, I'd be reminding AMC of the record cable viewership during contract negotiations every chance I had, and be demanding that AMC up the budget. Their budget shenanigans ruined last season, and the producers should have sacked up and forced AMC to give them their due.

Strolpol: Or do you seriously think an overpowered industrial magnet designed for lifting CARS wouldn't blank a laptop hard drive?

Only at short range. Lifting magnets have north and south poles close to each other. This creates a strong field between those poles, but it drops to zero very quickly as you move away from the magnet. Fridge magnets work on the same principle - alternating stripes of 'N' and 'S' poles.

The force in the car-lifting magnets comes from the iron core, not the electricity. They use a pulse of DC to magnetize the iron, and then a decaying AC pulse to demagnetize it and drop the load. They don't operate on a variable voltage like the control box that was shown in the show.

I have worked around a 4000 ton magnet at a local cyclotron lab, and I have also worked with the capacitive-discharge units that are used to magnetize rare-earth magnets in speakers. The cyclotron one would mess with nearby CRT monitors, but neither one was a threat to credit cards or hard drives at normal working distances.

Gigantic magnets can do something very similar to what you saw, despite what has been said above.

See also the previous post someone made about the fulminated mercury. Did it work scientifically 100%? No. Was it badass? Yes. So accept the badassness and move on, unless you think you're watching Mr. Wizard or Bill Nye.

How do I know the above is true excluding having been around a few incredibly powerful magnets before? Because Walt said so.

/thinks, in the show, it didn't actually work, based on the beginning of the episode

They used the wrong type of magnet for what they were trying to do, but there isn't much other way they'd be able to easily explain how they'd get a special magnet into a truck given Walt is now broke and Jesse doesn't have the millions required to buy it. There are magnets smaller than 4000 ton magnets that can screw up virtually any electronics. You just don't see them much since most everything is electronic now.

Modern laptops, though, are far less susceptible to problems with magnetism than old ones. Let's all pretend it wasn't some new Samsung and was really an old beater IBM Thinkpad with about 47 pounds of ferrous metals in it. :D

/no, any magnet that will fit in a truck is not going to bring things flying at the wall from 20+ feet away, nor tilt all the lights in the exact same horizontal direction no matter where they're positioned
//glad you do the "relax" bit at the end there, though, because you're 1000000% right about that. People need to chill. Magnet scene is not Fonzie jumping sharks

Farkin' Uke: I have no idea why anyone responds to anything that the Canadian shaped pile of fail posts about ANY topic, but regardless of the thread (TV, politics, hockey) he is invariably wrong about it.

Oh, he's just from rural Ontario. They think they're something special over there; some kind of intellecual wunderkinds, or something. Could be from living near Toronto, maybe.

Drat - this is why I like to rewatch the previous season before I see the new season.

What happened to Ted again? Was he all beat up from last season when they made him sign a check or something? I don't remember the details.

FFS, it's been almost a year and I was probably drunk when I saw last season and I've drunk so much since then.

Okay season premiere.....I'll send Vince Gilligan a check for not watching it through approved channels.

Saul and Skyler sent some muscle over to his place to make him pay his IRS bills and not blow the money on bullshiat. He tried to escape, slipped on a throw rug, and slammed his head/neck into some cabinets. I think. It has been a while since I watched it.

Now that last night's episode should have been called "How to resolved huge plot holes from last season", the rest of the series can actually move forward. Now, will Mike partner with Walt, seeing he has nothing else going on? Will he do it to overthrow Walt? or will he teach Jesse and have Jesse take out Walt after Walt gets more and more evil and power-hungry. Maybe Mike will take over as Kingpin, and ironically be doing it because he's terminally sick as well? Or maybe mike was.will be working with the Feds? Will Mike see this as an opportunity to break free of a life of crime, go to the Feds and work undercover for immunity?

I remember randomly catching the first episode on its first showing and spending two seasons trying to convince people I know to watch it.

'it's this show about a science teacher who makes meth and the burnout who loves him'
'.....yeah, I'll get right on that'

Thankfully, eventually, the show blew up without my awkward endorsements and most people I know watch it religiously and will grumble with me about the wait between shows and seasons. I'm sure there will be some grumbling over some plot points (likely not scientific, not my bag), but excitement levels are set to be extremely high.

We're in Sopranos level of quality here, tv history is being made and the bar raised for the next AMC classic in waiting: 'small town secu-' *vomit*

My province's weather phenomenon's asshattery aside, let us bask in the next 7 Sundays and prepare bitter diatribes in advance for the horrifically long wait for the true conclusion with one thought in mind: it has to be worth the wait. ;-)

Strolpol: ontariolightning: that bosnian sniper: Scientifically accurate or not, the magnet thing was pretty damn funny.

acceptable maybe on Dexter, but on Breaking Bad where everything is correct scientifically its a huge hole

I wonder what kind of medication Walt was taking in that flash-forward scene?

Did you hear how panicky Mike was when he told Walt "You have no idea what you've just done."?

Maybe it makes me a sociopath but I still cheer for Walt to survive all of this with his health and family intact. Maybe because he reminds me of my dad so much.

I think the reason fans are so rabid about it is b/c it's a really good show, when we tried to tell people for 4 years that it's good, they responded with, "Ew, that show about meth, you're a degenerate." Now those same people who called the early adopters degenerates are finally finding the show and are downright evangelical about it now. I say it's finally getting the hype it deserves.

Sad, but the ratings have grown each year at least. I remember lamenting last season when The Jersey Shore was watched by twice as many people. My theory is that the only shows that do well anymore are "background" shows, the kind where people can read a magazine or browse the internet while watching and are still easily follow it.

2012-07-16 06:51:43 PM
Loved the HELL out of it. It had equal bits of grimness and hilariity, as well as some great cinematography.

Jesse's "YEAH, BIATCH! MAGNETS!" had to be the line of the night, although Mike certainly had more than his fair share of gold lines.

Personally, though, I can't wait to see the consequences of Gus' death and who comes out of the woodwork to avenge him.

And more people watch Two and a Half Men than most TV shows.

Quality of show != quantity of viewers.

Case in point: Jack & Jill pulled in almost $150 million at the box office. The Hurt Locker pulled almost $50 million at the box office. I doubt you'll find many arguments for the former being better than the latter.

What I'm trying to say is that I don't watch Breaking Bad because it has millions of viewers. I watch it because it's the best damn thing on TV these days.

Because you obviously disagree, more power to ya with what you *do* watch.

Just rewatched the premiere. I think the coolest thing about the whole episode just might be the look that Walt has on his face, starting in the getaway from the police station, and lasting throughout the rest of the show. It's this look of supreme calm, almost sublime, zen-like calm. It's like Walt (Heisenberg?) feels like he's achieved some new plane of existence, and is so much more than any other human. Like because of all these things that he's done, he's finally managed to escape the mediocrity that he so loathed at the beginning of the series.

But based on the show's past & the opening of this season, Walt is still a dumbass.
He destroyed the lab, but didn't plan for the laptop.
He didn't plan for Mike wanting to kill him, but got lucky they have other issues.
He cranked the power on the magnet, so they had to leave the truck. Even if he planned for it, that's stupid.

Just like Gus told him when they first met, Walt is sloppy and doesn't think things through.
Gus tried to be his friend, but he overreacted to a kid's death. Gus became is enemy.
Then he killed another kid trying to kill Gus.
Then he blew up innocent people trying to kill Gus.
And let's not forget Jesse's dead girlfriend.

Well, he didn't kill a kid in his effort to get Gus, nor did he kill any innocents in the suicide bomb attack, but I see your point and I agree. Walt has survived this long largely through pure good fortune.

But that doesn't matter to Walt. All he knows is that he survived. He believes his own hype, now. In this season's premiere, he's starting to see himself as, basically, everything he's ever wanted to be. He is a walking legend in his own mind. Arrogance and pride have always been his biggest sins, and now he's letting that arrogance and pride manifest itself in an even more blatant way than ever before.

The audience knows that Walt really isn't a badass, but just try telling him that.

You give Walt entirely too little credit. The thing you miss is that events compound one another.

Walt's business relationship with Gus was tainted before they ever met, given the Mexican cartel wanted revenge for Tuco's death and Gus' relationship to the cartel. Gus intended to withdraw his protection of Walt once Gale learned Walt's techniques, since to do otherwise would provoke an open confrontation with the Mexican cartel for which Gus was not yet ready. Walt figured out his head was on the chopping block after Gale learned the recipe quickly, which is why Walt got the second chemist out of the superlab as soon as possible to be replaced by Jesse.

Which caused problems of its own, when Jesse had his run-in regarding Tomas and the rival dealers, and Combo's murder. So, Jesse was out and Gale was back in...and so on and so forth.

The key thing is Walt has been spinning plates since getting in bed with Tuco, only to find out there are plates on top of plates, on top of plates...

2012-07-17 03:59:41 AM

Ivo Shandor: I'm worried about this magnet thing.

Degenz: MagSeven: Degenz: No, I didn't read the thread, but

I was really disappointed with this premier. And I don't like getting spoon-fed little bits and pieces of time warp shiat that might happen sometime in the future or in the past.

You have to be some kind of a story plot masochist to appreciate this shiat.

Actually if they told you upfront what was going on that would be more like spoon-feeding. Also this show has always utilized flash forwards and foreshadowing, even flashbacks. This wasn't your first episode was it?

I remain optimistic. I haven't been let down yet, not expecting to be this late in the game.

WTF are you talking about, retard?

Killing other criminals doesn't impress me.

Who are you, Jodie Foster?

So much awesome in one sentence. I'm not even concerned about the argument, that comment is GOLD!

Me too, while it sucks how they split the last season it also means they have the time to make the shows as good as they can be.

bionicjoe: He's a dumbass, not a bad ass.

Even in the opening scene he's a dumbass. He has a fake ID, meaning he doesn't want people to know who he is, yet he gives the waitress $100 for his breakfast. If I wanted to 'Fly under the radar', I wouldn't do anything that noticeable, especially if the cops started poking around.

/Also, see when he returned the Charger he bought for Jr. Instead of just returning it, he damages it, then blows it up.

I don't think he cares much if the waitress remembers him. I don't think he plans on living much longer.

This thread could be dead, but a conversation my husband and I had came to mind. Since Walt's lab and distribution mechanism is gone, might he possibly strong-arm Ted into using his factory and trucks?
