Last summer a company had complaints about stability problems with a trailer. Somebody sent the truck-trailer combination out for a high speed test drive. The trailer swerved and launched a backhoe onto an old woman in the next lane. Personal injury lawyers were ecstatic. (Keywords: I-495 national grid crash massachusetts.)

This isn't surprising. Horse people assume that they're superior, entitled, and can do no wrong.

The assholes hauling horse trailers snag up traffic in the middle of our small town all the time, and have a tendency to take up six parking spaces along the side of the road.

Cause hey, they own horses, so f*ck everyone else.

The women were identified as Shun Jones, 48, of Carrollton, Texas, and Amanda Omo-Iyamu, 38, of Balch Springs, Texas.

Lamarcus Lockett, 18, of Carrollton, who was inside the 2007 Pontiac Vibe when the two women outside were struck, was not injured.

Talk about a bad Vibe for the whole situation.

Horse trailers need to be driven only on dirt, mountain roads with a sheer dropoff and very bad brakes. Driving the Denver Salt Lake City highway is a no-no. And 16 is way too old to drive.

CSB: growing up, I worked summers at a stable doing the work the illegals wouldn't do (shoveling horse shiat, killing rats, loading hay, etc)...Anyway, we're supposed to be taking a load oh horses the a show out of state, leaving at 5am....well, the illegals are still drunk from the night before so the trainer (also drunk, still drinking, in fact) has ME drive the flatbed truck, hauling 16 head, for the first 6 hours so the could sober up.
/Did I mention I was 14?
//also got a good look at my first truck stop hooker that morning...a lesson that teaches itself, they say

16 year old driving with a farkload of valuable horses with the stable name probably emblazoned on the side?

BS, someone else was driving and the kid is going to take the hit. (I am not trying to make THAT joke)

/look for this kid to get some premium rides in the future.

/cynical side here with some knowledge of equestrian stuff.

I learned how to drive with a grain truck in the middle of an empty field like other other person I grew you with but we all knew that if we took the truck off private property onto a road our parents were going to loose the farm to the fines what the he'll was this guy thinking

/learning to drive on something with 18 gears makes it so you never forget how to drive a stick

Damn, that sucks... That kid will never want to get behind the wheel after that, killing 2 people on your first drive...

I learned how to drive on a tractor. You know, the kind used to plow fields and such. My dad turned me loose on the thing in a BIG field.

I learned how to back up with mirrors only when my dad drove our dump truck a half mile into the woods on our ranch. Then told me to back it out. When I completed that without a scratch, he made me do it again. With the boat on a trailer attached to the dump truck.

The only accidents I get into are pretty spectacular (see my profile) and tend to be caused by other people ;)

If you're teaching your 16-year-old son how to drive, do it in the family sedan. Not in your semi-tractor trailer towing a loaded horse trailer

It's a semi-trailer, or a tractor trailer. There is no semi-tractor about it, subby.

This would all be great, except nothing in TFA says they were teaching the kid to drive using the semi.
Next time they should make sure to be far enough from the road to change their tire.

THIS! I live in a county with lots of horse breeders and riding events. Everyone I know agrees that horse people around here are the most arrogant, rude, self-righteous people they've ever met. What's worse is that they act like that on the road.

Also on the right side is another sad story about an 8 year old crossing a freeway at 10 oclock at night getting hit and killed. What is wrong here? Why is an 8 year old out at 10 much less crossing a freeway and what kind of ass lets a 16 yr old drive a semi? What is happening to our society that people let these sort of things happen?

Sounds like no dad or another man to teach him how to be a man. Also, it didn't state if the kid left the lane, if the left side tire needs changing put the right side in the grass if you have enough shoulder. The other good choice is to sacrifice the rim and drive slow with cautions lights on the shoulder till you can take an exit. I will drive on cheap steel rims before I die changing a tire.

Still haven't finished the thing, though I did keep it after the Illinois fiasco. Long story, another time. And I'm not building the A version - the Polar Lights kit has the fuselage/etc. for both versions. I'm going with the one I like the best ;)

It probably took the kid half a mile to stop and find a safe place to pull over. Hauling a live load is not the same as hauling produce or boxes. Horses move a lot. The trailer bounces and sways. Assholes tend to do dangerous things around you and since you have live animals stopping short and sudden turns are not an option. Give trailers space on the road!!!!

Unless the car got hit, he had to finish changing the tire before getting himself home or where ever he needed to go. I am sure he is related to one or both women and not likely laughing at all.

THIS!

The same sort of thing comes out when people talk about motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

(IMO) All 3 want special consideration and attention paid to them by average car/truck drivers, but never want to compromise on their end.

Big trucks seem to be the least objectionable and most professional. Still, their BS TV commercials piss me off. Compaints about people following too closely (since you can stop faster then them, I'm not sure why this is a really big deal), not giving them enough space when you change into their lane ahead of them, etc. I do see people who slowly change into the lane ahead of a truck, not going any faster then the truck, and leaving them very little room. Some of this could be avoided if the trucks would stay out of the left most lane(s). I wouldn't push them all the way right because people are entering/exiting the freeway.
If you're a heavy vehicle with serious handicaps (relative to the other cars) when it comes to cornering, braking, and accelerating, then act like you understand that. Don't cut in front of me doing 50 when I'm doing 70 just because the even bigger truck ahead of you can't manage to maintain 50. Wait until I pass and then do your thing. I promise not to flip you off or cut in front of you the first chance I get. Don't go so fast on surface streets that you won't be able to stop for the light, thus very slowly blowing the light and screwing over all other drivers when traffic is heavy.

Some car drivers do their dangerous bullshiat things-texting, talking, other distractions. But, as far as I can see, there isn't a group making commercials asking people to stay alert and give a wide berth to car drivers as if they are just fine and not at all a part of the problem.

All that really needs to be asked of motorcyclists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and to a lesser degree big trucks, is that that they accept that each of them separately and even all together are in the minority on the road and that that largely requires them to go with the flow and act like the other vehicles, plus acting in a manner predictable to those drivers. When 90+% of the drivers are driving within the lines, all going the same direction, stopping at the lights, accelerating at a reasonable rate when traffic is heavy, and not cutting around all the other cars just to be first at the light, you are the problem when you don't.

2012-07-16 12:09:53 AM
This has nothing to do with the story but you people that think you're more important than a truck need to get a clue. Time is money with truckers and you getting to the mall 3 seconds faster is worthless. In this state, trucks are totally prohibited from using the left most lane when there are three or more lanes. This is bullshat because it never fails that a bunch of pinhead 4 wheelers with nothing better to do than drive 50 in a 60 will block up the only available lanes and hold up a trucker that can't legally pass. Stop being a bunch of self-important douche bags and let the truckers get where they need to go. So farking what if you have to slow down for three seconds while a trucker passes a slower truck. Cry me a river douche babies.
