Coco LaFemme: That story gave me the warm and fuzzies.

Me too.

Life needs more warm fuzzies to cancel out all the negativity.

Follow-Up: The Police Officer promptly returned to the scene and took the mother deer home. She was later reported to be delicious.

Did he taser the shiat out of it first?

Did he violate its civil rights first? Did he find 10 billion dollars worth of marijuana near the fawn? I mean, at least he served an arrest warrant to the wrong house and then shot the family dog, right?

Come on, man, I need details here.

HOW TO HELP

Sarvey Wildlife Care Center will accept donations to help care for the fawn at its website, sarveywildlife.org. Further updates on the deer can be found on the center's Facebook page. More photos of the rescued fawn can be found on The Dispatcher blog at blogs.bellinghamherald.com/dispatcher

Can we offer to eat it? That would help resolve the situation.

And then he loses his job for interacting with a wild animal.

And it too will grow up only to run out in front a speeding automobile, causing death to it, and massive damage to the car. Or maybe it'll kill a guy on a motorcycle.

I wonder if it was a matter of "BLAM BLAM BLAM...Stop or I'll shoot!"

Yep. Deer poop would be better than drunkard puke any day, or night.

"Workers at the wildlife center don't name the animals, because they don't want to get too attached. And they wear hoods during feeding, so fawns don't get the idea humans will care for them."

If they're going to dress like that around the deer, they should name it Zimmerman.

Dont fool yourself. Cops are the worst.

Shoot them both. Deer are food.

Did it get dates for the officer's three friends, too?

2012-07-14 09:25:18 PM
Wait, what's being nursed back to health? The dead mother, the police car, or the baby deer?

2012-07-14 09:30:56 PM
The mother deer was tased to death because he felt she wasn't complying fast enough with his demands to stand down

How did the officer get hurt enough to need nursing back to health?

Why was the police officer's mother killed?

Won't the officer get hurt by all the wild animals at the center?

Living in Bellingham and having had to swerve onto the shoulder of I-5 to avoid a stupid tick farm who jumped Into traffic, I say he should have shot the baby deer. Right in its cute little face.

Stupid deer in our hood have paralyzed a friend who hit one on his motorcycle, nearly killed a guy on a bike a block from our house, and one threw himself into my husbands van while he was stopped at the corner. Idiots.

I also live in Bham (20 years) and I don't think people drive fast enough to damage either a deer or a car. With everyone driving 10+mph below the posted speed limit, I expect deer to simply saunter between vehicles without a problem.

OK, I'm exaggerating. Yeah, a lot of deer get hit and people get hurt. But after driving the entire length of Boulevard doing 22 in a 35 for the umpteenth freakin' time, I'm not so sure too many southsiders will ever actually hit a goddamn deer.

years ago i moved to a rural area. i quickly learned deer are plentiful and they will run in front of your car or motorcycle. that's how i know the motorcyclists in this area are idiots.

thank you for helping the deer, LEO.

Here in Washington, it's well versed that the Seattle PD is corrupt, racist, and in general disarray because of a Mayor that hates them.

On the other hand, it is also well known that our Washington State Patrol are some of the most well trained in the country, and uphold to standards in training only equivalent in the military. Your argument is invalid.

Farkers are just being realistic. Even my first thought was, "Awww, future venison." Maybe I'm just too used to cute growing up to be food... (See also: Lambs, goat kids, chicks, turkey poults, meat rabbits...)

It's almost as if you chose to live in an area inhabited by wildlife.
F*ck you. Move to the city and deal with crackheads instead.

On the east coast, the overpopulation of deer are destroying the forests.

Mr. MCSHEA: The future is not good. Theres no teenagers here. There's no young adults. Everybody is a mature individual. Whereas inside this fence, you have the complete profile of ages. You have youngsters. You have teenagers you have middle-aged adults. You have the old trees. And when the old trees go, there is something here to take its place. Out there, I dont see anything out there thats a small tree.

BEN-ACHOUR: One of the surprising things theyve found with this experiment is that deer allow invasive species to flourish. And with fewer native plants, there are fewer birds who depend on them for nests and food. There are fewer mice and fewer chipmunks here when they have to compete with deer. It wasnt always this way.

A hundred years ago deer were nearly extinct in Maryland and extremely rare in Virginia. Newly minted state game departments rushed to the rescue, banning or regulating hunting and setting up parks.

Mr. MCSHEA: They went and got deer from Arkansas and brought them here to repopulate that area. So growing the deer population was intentional. Its a conservation story and it went just like they planned. And now the flipside has happened.

BEN-ACHOUR: Deer arent evil, McShea is quick to emphasize, but they dont have any natural predators anymore and they need to be managed. States rely on hunters and even hired sharpshooters. But McShea says in order to protect the long-term health of forests, a wider, more aggressive approach is necessary.

Growing Deer Population Hurts Survival Of Forests

Been there, done that. I love the wildlife and enjoy watching the little deer families curl up under my cedar tree when it snows, and laughing as they eat my uptight neighbors arbor vitae. I have also witnessed deer going out of their way to kill themselves and others, and I reserve the right to call them idiots. Especially the ones that love to leap out of the 20' hedges onto the busy road by my house. Are you the person who tells earthquake victims to stop complaining when they lose their house in a quake because they should be thankful they don't live in tornado alley?

Yeah, the southside does tend to crawl along, I think it's the view. I live off Lakeway about a block from Whatcom Falls and everyone does 10-20 over up here. I drove by a motorcycle vs. deer collision a year or two ago where a deer had jumped out of the hedges into traffic on the curve before Lakeway splits with Electric Ave. It jumped right into a passing biker. I saw a severed deer leg, a 15' blood smear, then a helmet, and a 10' blood smear, then an inside out deer, then a very nearly dead biker. Twice since then I have had to swerve into the other lane to avoid suicidal deer in that area. I really don't know what would fix the problem aside from forcing the homeowners along Lakeway to chop down their giant hedges so the deer don't feel the need to launch themselves through and onto the road.
