While we need more information - these 35 questions are awful. So, for example:

2. You have stated that in "Feb. 1999 I left Bain capital and all management responsibility" and "I had no ongoing activity or involvement." It depends on what the definition of "involvement" is, doesn't it? Clearly you were involved with Bain to the extent that you owned it. Are you defining "involvement" in a uniquely specific way that only means "full-time, active, 60-hours-a-week, hands-on manager?"

3. How exactly are you defining "involvement?"

Those column inches are hard to fill, alright!

Seems like a lot of those questions have the preferred answer built in.

Bontesla: While we need more information - these 35 questions are awful.

I dunno. 5-7 are pretty epic damning.
5. You earned at least $100,000 as an executive from Bain in 2001 and 2002, separate from investment earnings according to filings with State of Massachusetts. Can you give an example of anyone else you personally know getting a six figure income, not divided or investment return, but actual income, from a company they had nothing to do with?

6. What did you do for this $100,000 salary you earned from Bain in both 2000 and 2001?

7. If you did nothing to earn this salary, did the Bain managers violate their fiduciary duty by paying you a salary for no discernible reason?

Either Romney did something to earn the $100k, and can be spit-roasted for dishonesty; OR, he did nothing to earn the $100k, and can be spit-roasted on the issue of Wall Street executives getting overpaid for their work, while regular workers get underpaid.

Catch-22.

Bontesla: But I could ask this in a single question. Couldn't you?

I suppose. But reporters like watching politicians squirm. It's sort of like a cat playing with a mouse.

And multiple narrow questions are harder to evade.

1. Are you contending

You wouldn't be asking the question if it wasn't already contended.

This, to me, is the case in a nutshell. No matter which of these two options is true, he's in trouble because he represents the worst aspects of Wall Street.

19. According to the Boston Globe, "Romney also testified that 'there were a number of social trips and business trips that brought [him] back to Massachusetts, board meetings' while he was running the Olympics. He added that he remained on the boards of several companies, including the Lifelike Co., in which Bain Capital held a stake until 2001." You testified that while running the Olympics you took a number of business trips to Massachusetts and for board meetings for companies including Lifelike Co. Bain had a stake in this company until 2001. Are you contending that you could attend board meetings for Lifelike Co at the same time Bain Capital had a stake in Lifelike Co and at the same time you owned the stock of Bain Capital, but that somehow your attending a board meeting for a company partially owned by Bain had nothing to do with Bain because you were on the board as Mitt Romney the individual, not as the representative of Bain?

20. If yes to the previous question, do you understand that anyone who did not graduate in the top 5% of his class from Harvard Law School, as you did, may have a hard time understanding this?

I thought #20 was funny, but kind of dickish to everyone who DIDN'T graduate in the top 5% from Harvard.

I'm sure there are some top 10% HLS grads who can wrap their brains around this.

I mean, hell, I graduated from a backwater public law school and I understand the question.

rocinante721: So why does any of this poop matter?

Well, if Romney committed a felony in his SEC filings, that's pretty much the end of the road for him as a presidential candidate. If he didn't, then someone else appears to have done this on his behalf. Or there's a whole other explanation which he isn't talking about.

Either way, Romney is trying to evade the question by blaming the Obama campaign for the whole thing. It's perfectly valid for the media and supporters of both candidates to examine the facts more closely.

The fact that Forbes would post this article, and the associated video, does not speak well of Romney's chances of winning this particular pissing match. He'd better suck it up and start answering some questions, or this cloud won't go away.

For a boiled down questions how about- Can you be the sole shareholder of a company and have no responsibility for the operation of that company? Where does the buck stop?

That's because no reporter working today seems to understand the concept of pressing for an answer or asking a follow-up question. They can only read their list of questions. So they put the pressing/follow up on the list.

Mitts strategy so far:

Shakes the magic etch-a-sketch, various responses may differ depending on hard you shake it and when:
I didn't do it; you didn't see me do it

While it was my company, sole stock holder, CEO and collected a pay check doesn't mean I knew what was going on

Who are you going believe? Me or the record?

If I done it, I forgotten about it

You're mistaken,

If I was mistaken, I forgot, so it doesn't matter

Somebody else did it

It's the media fault

Finally, HEY, I AM THE GOD-DAMN JOB CREATOR, and don't YOU forget who is in the WHITE house

Above all, remember, only the RIGHT people can make the RIGHT decision for what is RIGHT for America. Democracy is too important to leave to the people, (especially the WRONG people)

Repeat as necessary

The fun part is watching the folks in control of the GOP try to rght this ship by blasting the Romney campaign and shocking them into action. Once they see that the tipping point is looooong past then they'll go full Derp and scream on Fox News 24x7 about abortion, gays, foreigners, soshilism, obamacare, and muslim commie robots raping the elderly.

Once Mitt loses the GOP will declare him as just another RINO tat they never really liked and they will lurch even further to the right into full John-Birch-land.

If he wasn't involved in Bain in those years, then he lied on the SEC forms, which is a felony.
If he was involved with Bain in those years, then he was lying to the media for the last 10 years and the "outsourcing" attacks by the Obama campaign are 100% accurate.

A person can easily own a company and have nothing to do with the day-to-day operations.

A person who doesn't have anything to do with the goings on of their business is a fool.

So,they're saying Romney's a fool?

So, if it really turns out to be painfully obvious that Romney was indeed with Bain until 2002, and he did in fact lie on that SEC document and therefore committed a felony, and becomes otherwise utterly unelectable... what then? For the election I mean. Romney would be out, so how would they go about picking someone else? Would RON PAUL suddenly have a real chance at the convention? Would it be a free for all? Can they then nominate whoever they want? Will Scooby and Shaggy uncover the truth behind the astronaut's ghost?

If he didn't then he's a liar.
If he did then he's a felon.

Pre GOP convention, the delegates would vote for a new candidate.
Post GOP convention, he would remain on the ballot until the party reconvened and voted for a new candidate.
Either way, I would imagine the Paultards would be the most organized of the bunch and would probably be able to put RON PAUL on the ballot thereby securing the largest landslide since the '84 election. For Obama that is.

Look what happened at Apple when Gates stepped down; there was a big changing of the guard procedure and everyone knew who was taking over from him.

Now Romney is saying he "took a leave of absence" from Bain, but never says who then ran the company. It didn't just run itself; the SEC would want someone named as CEO or President or something if Romney left those positions. So, who took over for Romney while he was gone? There has to be someone, right?

Only 1 question needs to be asked IMO.

Who did you lie to? The SEC or the American people? Because one of those has to be false.
