Depends on the duty to retreat laws in your state. Entering a place that has clearly been broken into, even your own home, and shooting someone may result in charges. Check your local laws before pulling the trigger.

/also you have to clean the blood up
//let the cops do it

To be honest, I really can't argue with you on this point. I was just making the case that if it happened here, it would get pretty messy, quickly

You are the kind of person who makes gun owners look bad. Killing someone is a last resort not a Weeners. You are just itching to murder someone. It's like a game and life is cheap. What if the woman has alzheimers or a mental illness? Those people do some crazy things but you think executing them is better than calling the police! Your guns should be taken away. You are a danger to society.

Theaetetus: Dude, seriously? She was cowering in the closet, not "putting up a fight". She's obviously schizophrenic. She's not a hardened criminal, but a pitiful, insane person. She's going to be committed, probably for life. There's really no need to sic a dog on her or shoot her, and the fact that you suggested that suggests that you're just as sick as she is, but much more dangerous.

So Doctor, you think the police should be making that diagnosis while the person is still hiding in someone else's closet? And you can reasonably expect an insane person to not be dangerous?

Plus the scissors count as a weapon. I can't exactly blame the cops for not wanting to open the door and discover "Oh she's crazy and she has a 12 gauge....". So she got bit by the dog a few times while she was illegal inside someone's home. That's not even close to police brutality.

/if you note they're opting not to have six cops hold her down while a seventh gets her finger prints

As a gun owner, I agree. I would have simply called the cops and explained that someone had broken into and barricaded themselves in my house. Oh, and by the way, they should know that I have firearms and ammunition safely locked away in the house, but she may have found them.

/Problem solved, and not by me.

She's illegally in the house. She's changed the locks, has a stolen car out front. She's holed up in a closet with a pair of scissors. If they bring in the dog and she's warned they'll release it and she's still putting up a fight, then I don't have a problem with it. They could have done worse and just pulled their guns and shot at her.

They seem to be treating her with kid gloves anyways. A person doesn't want the police to take their mug shot or get finger printed? I'm really surprised they let that go, I just assumed they would force her to do both since she's in custody.

Funny, there's a similar article posted on Consumerist.

Colorado Family Kept Out Of Own Home For 8 Months By Squatters Claiming Adverse Possession
Short URL: http://con.st/10100576
"This all goes back more than a year, when the husband landed a job that required him to relocate to Indiana. He moved away and the rest of the family followed last August. They tried to sell their home of 12 years before leaving, but opted to just turn off the utilities and winterize the house, with the goal of revisiting the real estate market later.

Not long after they had departed for Indiana, a neighbor contacted them to say there was a new family living in the house.

The couple came back and tried to talk to convince the squatters that they were the rightful owners of the house, but to no avail. The squatters claimed they had paid $5,000 to a third party -- a former real estate agent whose license had been revoked -- for a deed of "adverse possession."
"

In that discussion thread, half the people are saying things like "Simple- call the cops, they are trespassing", and the other half are saying stuff like this: "It's not the job of the police to adjudicate a situation like this. I call the cops, saying that somebody is trespassing in "my" house. The cops show up and find that people living in the house, with furniture, dog, kids, and mom cooking dinner in the kitchen. The family living in the house claims to own the house. Who are the cops supposed to believe?"

Now, in this case, she was hiding in the closet, not cooking. But she had put up blinds and changed the locks. And the cops had absolutely no problem with getting her out.

JesseL: But if I can be a little bit serious for a minute, being a minority can profoundly affect one's personality in a way that non-minorities don't generally recognize. When you think about it, it makes sense. When you think of who you are and what defines you as a person, you think of those qualities about yourself that are unique to you or a small group with similar backgrounds or interests. Now couple that with a history of your group being oppressed, and you get an idea of how powerful it is.

Now--and forgive that this is a white guy talking--take African Americans, who have been oppressed with nooses, whips, fire hoses, dogs, etc. for dozens of generations. One of them sees another, in this supposedly post-racial era, having a dog sicked on her. That's farked up. That triggers something that happy-go-lucky palefaces simply have no analog for.

Another example, my first thought--as a relatively young almost-perpetual-student white kid from an upper middle class background--was to compare this story to the pepper spraying incident at UC Davis. I thought, "Well this woman was armed and trespassing. I go apeshiat when someone takes my parking space. If I came home and someone was in my house, they would be in trouble." So subconsciously I made a snap judgement that what happened to her wasn't all that bad. Yet something about it bugged me, yet it still took a good 5 or 10 minutes to figure out what was so farked up about the situation.

That said, I'm not coming out on either side of this issue. On the one hand, an armed and somewhat deranged trespasser begging for a confrontation--on the other hand, cops who just need to get her out of the closet without getting stabbed in the neck. There weren't going to be any winners here.

This sounds like bullshiat.

You can't refuse a mugshot. They have restraints. They can easily force you into one of them Hannibal Lecter gurneys so you can't move if you become combative, injuring you in the process if need be. If they really wanted to, they can get your fingerprints. They're just letting her off easy.
