I was a huge fan of Bourdain until i read Medium Raw. In that book, he basically told anyone inspired by Kitchen confidential that he was a liar and sellout and that he was sorry for deluding us. While I did lose some respect for him, I still respect him to some degree and I still like his shows. He's just not the badass kitchen outlaw anymore, and I bet he feels a little bit of regret for inspiring a bunch of young cooks to follow in those particular footsteps.

As a cook myself, Medium Raw was a betrayal, but it was a necessary betrayal.

That said, I have no interest in any fiction stuff he does, aside from The Cook's Night Before Christmas.

I never got the liar bit from that book. I read those parts more as a look back on who he was when he wrote KC and an attempt to set the record straight after a truly sober look at who he was at that time he was describing in the book

/if someone read KC, and wanted to follow in Tony's footsteps, I would consider their life pretty much on the wrong tracks to start with.

Here's what I don't get. How is this guy who smokes like a chimney such a phenominal cook (from what I understand I guess..I've never tasted anything he has cooked)? All the contestants on Hells Kitchen smoke too. As a former smoker I know that shiat messes with the way you taste things.

As far as I know he never claimed nor was regarded as a phenomenal cook. He was just good at taking the ingredients he had and putting it together correctly. He knew how to prepare the standard dishes for bistro cooking, which as I understand (never having done anything in the culinary world other than read his book), is a basic just for being a chef. He became famous because of his writing and wit. He admits that he lucked into his major advances in life instead of earning them because of his cooking prowess.

Basically, he became an ambassador from the world of chefs and foodies to the realm of the norms. So the norms kind of think he was a great cook, but as he admits he was just a journeyman cook. He just happened to have the knack for conveying to the everyman what goes on behind the scenes. We all thought that we were now in on the secret because we had read his book.

As for the smoking thing, it puzzled me too. He does address it to the extent that he says he is baffled by wine. The subtleties are completely lost on him. Also, he has recently finally quit smoking.

I do hate this douchbag as well. He randomly called out other TV Chefs for no other reason but to show how 'cool' he thinks he is. I hate his ass so much I don't even bother noticing him except when someone goes and says how cool and wonderful he is and wants you to believe that other folks think he's cool and wants you to think he's awesome instead of the total douche which is what he is. IMO that is.

Anthony Bourdain is awesome. Lots of jealousy swirling around the man--people wish they'd handled their lives to where they could have done and seen a fraction of what he has.

So he's a pretentious asshole. Comfort yourself with that knowledge next time you're in your cubicle, and he's halfway around the world feeding squid to a hot 18-year-old.

Because 99% of TV "Chefs" like the Food Network personalities cannot be considered chefs by any stretch of the word. Almost all of them have never set foot in a professional kitchen or spent a day actually working on the line.

How anyone can consider Rachael Ray,Paula Deen,Guy Fieri,Sandra Lee and their ilk to be chefs is completely beyond me.

A convention of this kind is just the pretentious kind of fakey assholery I would have thought Bourdain would despise. Well, the Bourdain of old anyway. Celebrity is ruining the world.

I watched a couple of his "No Reservations" episodes. Pretty interesting, although he seemed to emphasize the notion that he possesses an enormous penis. Not terribly conducive to a cooking show.

For me, anyway...

I like watching the guy on No reservations, always entertaining.

Never knew why he was famous, or that he wrote a book or several. Of the..maybe 12...episodes of the show I've seen, he mentioned a few times 'I came here before, I was a young punk with a lot to prove and I'm ashamed of myself', which came off as genuine, if a bit odd.

But, as I said, his show's entertaining to me, so I'd probably fawn a little.

Funny that people roll out "haters gonna hate" when someone talks shiat on AB. If anyone is a hater it is him. As for most of the Food Network "Chefs", most of them will be the first to admit they aren't a chef. Rachel Ray has done so plenty of times in interviews.

I've watched plenty of his shows because I do like seeing different foods and countries but he is just such an insufferable prick. When he went somewhere in the Middle East was the worst. He had a security detail with him and at the end he said "Nothing happened, so we obviously didn't need you..". One of the reasons nothing happened was probably because the team was there.

2012-07-15 01:34:56 AM
I'm surprised that he would show up to Comic-Con... there aren't any booze there, there aren't any 2 star Michelin restaurants serving there, and none of his restaurant friends are there for him to mooch off of.

Oh right... to plug his graphic novel. I'm sure he'll be leaving profanity laced voicemails to his agent for this.

If you hate and avoid Anthony Bourdain because he comes off as an overly critical and pretentious asshole, what are you doing on fark? Are you lost?

He wasn't and he admits as much. He was a turn-and-burner his whole career. It just turned out he's a whole lot better as a writer than he ever was as a cook. He knows what the food is and how it all works and why it all matters. Execution... not quite so much, but he knows how to get the people who can do that part. (Step 1: Fly to Mexico.)

Guy Fieri not only owned and operated several restaurants (both as a chef and a manager) before getting the job on Food Network, but had a over twenty years of restaurant experience. The only criticism or suggestion he ever received on The Next Food Network Star was that he needed to "dumb it down" because he was using too much technical/industry jargon in his presentation. Annoying as he is, he was in fact a chef.

/Paula Deen is the Nikki Minaj of TV cookery.

He's a pretty nice guy in person, if you're not a pushy jerk. I met him briefly after going to see him and Eric Ripert's "Good vs Evil" spoken word thing. Lots of fun, and pretty interesting if you're into food.

Yeah, I get the impression that his prickishness comes from impatience, and the luxury and inability to suffer fools gladly.

It varies from person to person. My sense of taste is fine and my sense of smell is actually phenominal. I can smell a sweaty indian guy in a train from 40 feet away and start dry heaving while my wife looks at me like I'm insane, "What? I don't smell anything?!?!" Of course, she's married to a smoker so yeah, maybe her having a bad sense of smell is a boon.

For that matter, what, exactly, is pretentious about him? The man loves street food and half the time goes out of his way to avoid the over-priced fancy joints, unless they actually do have extraordinary food. He loves good food and he doesn't care where it comes from.

There was nothing random about it. The only "chef" that he ever called out that didn't deserve it was Emeril Lagasse, and Bourdain was big enough to admit that he was wrong about the guy after the fact.

I've seen him eating at plenty of fancy joints, but you are right that he eats a lot of street food. The reason I think he is a pretentious asshole is how he slams Food Network hosts for making food that he thinks is "mediocre". So eating a hamburger from a food cart is aces but if Rachel Ray makes it, it must be mediocre? Maybe pretentious is the wrong but he just comes off like he knows better than everyone else and I just get the feel he is full of shiat.

I love watching his shows to see different cuisines, though.
