How could you possibly believe a rework of MS Office could be anything but another cluster F#ck? Do you have that much misguided faith in Microsoft to actually do something right? I did the same thing. Why, with everyone buying widescreen monitors, would you put all the controls in a HUGE bar across the TOP of the monitor? There's all this extra space on the sides now, why not use THAT?

It was worse when Autodesk followed. Glad I found the mini buttons option and the undock the toolbars and put them someplace out of the way option.

Stop taking up usable screen area with buttons, dangit!

I still use Office Pro 2000. It works fine on Windows 7. I see no reason to upgrade it or upgrade to Windows 8.

The new paradigm at Microsoft will be "pullouts" - all choices will be collapsed into a "tick arrow" that you drag out with a gesture. If you drag far enough, it will pop out and re-dock to another corner of the screen.

This will revolutionize user interfaces!

In fitting with Metro, there are no longer floating windows... everything docks to a portion of the screen. For example, if you wish to save your document, use a flick gesture (not too fast or slow, that brings up alternative actions) to drag the pullout open (not too far, as it will then re-dock and re-close on the other side of the current frame), then triple-tap the save icon. If you want to perform a "Save as", use the "swirl" gesture in the icon.

If these are too complicated for those of you who are tablet-illiterate dweebs, use the simple keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Windows-Alt-S to "Save" or the simple shortcut Ctrl-Shift-Tab + Alt-Windows-s (note the case of the "S" in both shortcuts) to "Save As"

When you "Save As" you will be prompted for the location of your document in the Cloud. If you need additional space, you can purchase it in the Metro App store.

I have Office for Mac 2008.....I hate that farking ribbon too. I won't be getting the updated version of Office for Macs, though. No need - what I have suits me fine. I don't get why people have to update software when the software they have still works, and is still compatible with what they're using. It seems like a needless waste of money. I can understand biting the bullet and upgrading when what you have no longer works, but if it still does, why bother?

I have test station software (radiated emissions) written in VBA under Office 2000 that I had to spend a good deal of time modifying for my equipment. It runs OK under Excel 2007 at least on the test station's desktop machine (running XP), debugging is a pain on my laptop running Windows 7 (probably because the laptop is much faster). The laptop was forced to "upgrade" to Office 2010, I can probably keep the test station from being "upgraded". I fear the next update will "break" the software.

/I'm writing replacement software in LabVIEW.

Doesn't matter, my company used Office 2003 until we finally upgraded to 2010 last year. My guess is we'll be stuck with 2010 until 2016ish.

Definitely keep what works for you, but all else equal, Office for Mac 2011 blows away 2008 -- and especially if your company has an Exchange server. Entourage is a big steaming pile of dung; 2011 has Outlook -- the real kind of Outlook that all of the corporate types love.

That said, Office for Mac 2008 was an abortion of design with that floating format window which all too easily got in my way. That, and it couldn't edit equations in Office 2007 documents.

I typically just roll with all the version changes with Office, Windows, etc, but goddamn if I don't still farking hate and have trouble with Office 2010. I cannot farking stand it and at this point I imagine I never will.

Isn't that only useful if you're creating personal Word documents for yourself, though? I can't think of any time when that would be the case, though I'm sure such a situation does exist.

I can't use OpenOffice specifically because there's a 99% chance that the way it looks on my computer won't be at all how it looks when opened on an Office computer. And if I already have to have Office just to make sure it looks decent for everyone else, I may as well use Office in the first place.

Great headline subby, exactly how I feel. I am finally figuring out how to use their last "redesign" which is one of the most unintuitive interfaces ever. Especially compared to the previous version, which made sense in how it was desinged. I'm not an occasional user either, I am a test engineer and use it a lot in writing technical documents related to testing. Since my work computer is provided by the government I know darned certain they will "upgrade" as soon as they can.

Office 2010 takes between three and five minutes to open a one page excel or word document with a few lines with a more then capable windows 7 desktop.

I'm still using 2003 on my work computer at job 1. Job 2 has 2010, and it makes my head hurt.

You can always tell who has 2010, because they don't add carriage returns when typing documents. Horrible when I open a 5 page document, clear formatting (because fark your cutesy bolds and ALL CAPS paragraphs, that's why), and then have to go and see where they intended paragraphs.

I used OpenOffice until Ubuntu force-shifted to LibreOffice. Both are excellent, and I recommend them.* I still use OOO on my Win7 platform, LO on the Ubuntu sides. (Since they still share so much, they can't run side by side under the same OS session, but they can share across partitions, which is all I needed to worry about.)

* Since both are essentially Open Source (LO more than OOO, from what I understand, though I haven't been following OOO as much in recent years), there are many extensions for both. Some of them are pretty sweet, such as hybrid DOC/PDF format, direct-to-PDF, PDF conversion (edit 'locked' PDFs), on-panel calculator call, and lots more. Given all that, it's kind of incredible to me that non-enterprise users are still buying MSO, but I guess they just don't know their options.

Puppy is 'old'? As far as I know, the project is still maintained, in five different 'Puplet' versions.

DSL is the 'official' name of a certain distro project, to the extent that they're brandable, but it's more of a concept than a product, and numerous current and robust implementations exist, such as Knoppix and Tiny Core Linux. The 'official' DSL project has been in disarray for a couple years now (though it's showing some recent glimmers of resurrection), but it's hardly a unique implementation, and DSL as a concept is widely supported, so I think it's also a misnomer to call that 'old'.
