I could picture a horror/suspense/drama movie using something like this. A guy get's fingered by Father-mc-grabby as a kid and the townspeople do nothing about it because religion > all. He grows up and goes around planting and faking things like this. When large numbers of people gather to worship their tree vagina he picks them off with a sniper rifle, planted explosives, etc. Not all at once. Can't do it at the site or people would stop coming. He waits till they leave, follows them, and gets them one by one.

Some years ago, I worked in the data entry mines for Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Except for myself, Jose, and the gay IT guy, everyone else that worked there was a morbidly obese, white, annoying Christian woman. You know the kind, they wear their faith chips proudly on their wide, jelly-consistency mountain of cottage cheese shoulders. Damn I hated that place.

Anyhow, one day I'm looking at this scan of a bill, and in the margins above the document, in the generic scan noise there's a tiny little blot that looks vaguely like a man with a crown on his head, arms spread on a cross. I point it out to a co-worker, she tells her church buddy manager, she takes a screenshot and pretty soon it's printed out and tacked up on bulletin boards, cubicle walls and everyfarkingwhere in that place. For about a week, I had people coming to my cubicle to bask in the glory of the workstation the Savior appeared at. I found it mildly amusing but more or less annoying.

And here's why I eventually quit that place, before they'd let us out for break, they'd let someone pick a song to play over the PA system while we did some stupid ergonomic exercises and crap. Someone picked the crappiest, sappiest "I love Jesus" song I had ever heard, and I could not help but laugh uncontrollably at it. Woman across from me looked perturbed by this and asked me what was so funny, so I told her that was the worst song I had ever heard. So she goes and tells her church buddy manager, who comes over and takes a look at my cubicle, I had a metal, wind up Bender toy with a post-it on it that said, "One day me and my kind will replace you all." Hey, that's what we did there, we were backups for a robot, essentially a scanner and OCR software, we fixed its many mistakes. Well this manager said that was threatening and could be taken as a terrorist threat and was against "compliance" policy. I retorted that the woman across from me had 17 crosses and religious symbols in her work area, which was also against compliance policy. Fat Christian manager biotch said those things didn't bother her. I asked her if it would bother her if I had 17 crucifixes on my cubicle walls, but turned them upside down. She did not like that, I knew where this was going anyhow, and quit right there.

It felt completely awesome walking out of that place for the last time. Only thing that could have made it better is if the building blew up as I walked away in slow motion.

Just because a religion is pre-christian doesn't make it somehow more legitamate. All religions are about control, fear and superstition. A belief in the unseen or unmeasurable was not superstition; it was part of reality. Sorry, Matriarchal Spiritual Traditions are just as silly as the catholic church, islam or hinduism. Yes, some traditions were more cooperative with the "natural world" but again any reliance on unseen spirits to direct the world is just silly and has brought mankind not one whit of progress. The Smith who realized that he could smelt ore by heating it in the presence of charcoal saw that it would work every time he did it that way and never if he just prayed, sacrificed or "drank the ayhuasca with out throwing up". He may not have understood oxidation states of minerals, that oxygen atoms hopped from metal atoms to the carbon in the heat but just because we don't exactly understand why something happens doesn't mean spirits do it. And I would much rather live today with "plasma, microwave and liquid crystal devices" (not to mention anti-biotics, organ transplants and medical imaging technology) than 7000 years ago. I assume you would too, after all only 150 years ago half of all women died giving birth, something that almost never happens today.
