I don't recall the last time I had a Dunkin Donuts donut, but I'm still going to have to agree.

I'm gonna go w/the following formula, assuming the donuts are totally fresh:

90s DD > KK > modern DD

DD has gone downhill. Especially their crullers.

Or possibly just the place you get it from. As for me? I'll never understand the fascination with Krispy Kremes.

If you've ever had a fresh hot KK standard glazed donut right out of the oven - they are absolutely amazing. And my dad used to bring back old ones from Mobile years ago and they were great even several days old. As far as DD, no it's everywhere now.

I think for the record that both places have gone downhill since they started.

As the number of restaurants increases, quality usually decreases. But I can't speak for what they tasted like back in the 90's, because I don't remember ever having one. Not that such a mundane detail would stick with me. You might be doing what many people do and remember something better in the past that may not have necessarily been better. Humans tend to view the past with rose-colored glasses.

Um no, a fresh KK can barely be held without crushing it, and it just melts in your mouth as a sugary delight.

That being said, that was the last thing that ever changed in Winston-Salem.

There is an old KK 5 minutes from my house in Savannah. It's exactly the same as I remembered as a kid from the equally old KK in Tampa. "Hot Right Now" means melty, sugary awesome.

KK never was and never will be good. Sorry, too much taste of yeast to go with the sugar.

They were here in the Fox Valley (WI) for about 6 months. At first everyone brought that crap to work. After that they went back to Manderfield's, where the donuts are way freaking better. Good riddance.

My first job 20 years ago that I paid taxes on was at a Krispy Kreme in Gastonia, NC. Lots of good memories of that place but I'll just spill the beans on one incident. A buddy coworker of mine was getting a blowjob in the managers office with the chick being under the managers desk. Was funny because I walked in on him sitting at the desk with this funny look on his face...Didn't know there was a girl under the table. I knew it happened because the chick told me afterwords. Me and him are still good friends to this day. Good times...Good times...

Holy Crap. I forgot that today you could get a dozen regular glazed for 75 cents with the purchase of a dozen doughnuts.

My buddy wasn't the manager and it happened during the night shift if I remember correctly. During the night they left all the "normal" employees in charge because it was slow from around midnight-6am.

Since I don't own a TV, this is the first time I've ever heard of a "Krispy Kreme". My guess is that it probably contributes to the rampant obeci fat farks in the south.

2012-07-13 10:57:22 PM
I've never had a Krispy Kreme.

It was always Timmy Ho's or my grandmother's homemade doughnuts...which could beat the pants off of any commercially produced confection.

I'm not much of a doughnut freak - maybe the occasional DD here & there. First time I had a krispy kreme, I thought it was pretty damn good.
I imagine it's sorta like kettle-corn. The sugar-coated crunchiness is so different the first time, you think it's the best ever. Then after awhile, you just want some air-popped popcorn.

Again, i'm no doughnut Sommelier, so i'll defer.
Just me 2 cents.

Honestly, I'm kind of a purist when it comes to doughnuts, and any glazing tastes so sweet it hurts my teeth. I'd be all for Krispy Kreme if they just sold a regular freaking doughnut, but they don't. So they're not that great in my view, though I have no doubt that some people enjoy that sort of doughnut.

2012-07-13 11:28:35 PM
Hot, fresh KKs are amazing. Once they cool, they're farking nasty. They just get to tasting stale and greasy. I'd take a QuikTrip doughnut over a cold KK.

Why would anyone lie about living in WS? i lived there until I was 12 because my mom was a prof at Wake Forest Univ., then I moved to Turkey where my immigrant parents were originally from, eventually married someone from Switzerland, then moved to NJ for grad school. I've lived a colorful life.

KK is quite likely the worst lump of nasty you could attempt to call a Doughnut. If in Mass, I'll have a dozen Honey Dew originals, and in the south, I want Daylight Doughnuts please. Fresh, not made yesterday. Or even an hour ago. DD can suck it with KK.

CSB time...

In high school they sold these things 2 dollars a box for fund raisers and there was even massive amounts of extra credit to be had if you sold lots of them. One enterprising guy sold them for 1.50 and made up the rest of the cost himself, essentially buying an A in the class.

Never saw the attraction of KK's, but when /where I grew up we had a local 24 hour place called Dan-Dee Donuts (pretty rare in a town of 40K and started in the 50's), Fark those jokes for donuts that KK has and step up to a fresh, hot, buttered Persian...or a taillight...or chocolate-glazed cake or maple cruller. Good coffee, too...and grab a fresh loaf of hot Italian bread or a bag of ready-to-bake pizza doughto take home.

/and every roll of cash register tape had 25 red stars on it...get the red star on your receipt and get a free dozen. Won those a few times.

Only the few Timmy's that make their own doughnuts. Most bring in par-baked and frozen and re-heat in shop. Blech. Always Fresh only applies to the coffee.
