So you might have noticed a few changes around here. For your edification, here's a quick summary.

A) On all our headline pages (Main, Geek, etc.) you can now hover over the headline and share to Facebook or Twitter. It also shows an easy link directly to the article. If you don't like it, you can turn it off in your Preferences page in myFark (check the preference for, "Don't show Facebook and Twitter share buttons.")

2) We bumped up the font size a bit on headlines. Drew's eyes ain't what they used to be.

iii) We're increasing the maximum limits on images in threads - both dimensions and filesize. You can now post an image up to 850x1500px, with a filesize up to approx 500k. You can still link to images larger than that.

δ) We're also increasing the minimum width of our page to support the new image sizes, and because over 95% of you have screens that wide anyway.

blue) We're changing all contest threads (Photoshop, Farktography, etc) to automatically default to showing only the contest entries (vote-enabled comments), to keep the emphasis on the contest itself. There's a 'Show all" link after the last comment, and a checkbox to "Show nonvoting comments" at the top. If you always want to see all comments (both contest entries and discussion about the contest), you can change it in your Preferences page in myFark (check the preference for, "In contest threads (Photoshop, Farktopgraphy, captions, etc), see regular comments as well as contest entries.")

Why not have automatic image scaling to downsize the larger images when the browser is smaller with the old minimum size instead?

I don't mind the other changes but even on my widescreen monitor the current minimum size is significantly larger than my preferred web browser size, which seems to get me to about "Headlines of" on the right sidebar. Easily fixed via Stylish, but still mildly annoying to be expected to browse the web at or near full screen by default.

Font size sucks, the rest I'm indifferent about.

You should make the smart and funny buttons useful. Maybe have each post show their smart/funny count. (The way the Like button works in Disqus)

meg: So you might have noticed a few changes around here. For your edification, here's a quick summary.

...........

blue) We're changing all contest threads (Photoshop, Farktography, etc) to automatically default to showing only the contest entries (vote-enabled comments), to keep the emphasis on the contest itself.

This I feel it's a wrong choice, as often/many photoshop, Farktography threads have grown to better due to comments also ! Would it not be better to offer it reverse: keep it as it was but allow users to change Preferences to see only pictures/Pshops ?

That's my biggest complaint. I don't understand the benefits of massive amounts of blank white space, and only about 6 headlines visible at a time.

Do the apparently massive amount of really old people on Fark have all other sites on the internet CTRL+ 'd so they can read the font? Is Fark (with it's unusually large font size) the only website that has finally cracked the code of what users want in font size? As far as i can tell, Fark is an outlier when it comes to font size, so it makes me question either how far offbase everyone else is, or why Fark feels the need to be different from everyone else on this specific style issue.

Another problem with the font size, it's not even consistent on Fark. If you click on a thread, the headline at the top is a smaller font than the actual comments (at least in my FF). So now I've got the font size shrunk so the comments don't look like a Reader's Digest Book for Old People, but all the other text on the page is tiny.

δ) We're also increasing the minimum width of our page to support the new image sizes, and because over 95% of you have screens that wide anyway.

This. Not everybody browses full screen all the time. Not a huge problem for me - I never pay attention to the right-side column anyway. But just sayin'.

I take back the part in bold. Two-finger scrolling gets me too much side-to-side movement.

Max width should be 1200 or less to accommodate people who don't browse full screen.

This. And the text at the top of the page is in a different font from the comments, so with the comments at a reasonable size, everything ABOVE the comments is in teeny weeny text. Plus the aforementioned great big swaths of white space.

I know how to adjust my text size but it would be nice if the page code had enough internal consistency that doing so didn't result in THIS festering mess.

It genuinely appears no one gave the slightest consideration to the notion that some of us might actually LIKE smaller text, given how many things are broken by using the browser to adjust our text size back down. Honestly, did it really completely fail to ever cross anyone's mind or did it come up, then everyone involved in this redesign just waved a hand dismissively and collectively said "fark 'em!"?

I'll go ahead and jump on the font size bandwagon, this is ridiculous. I'm old and my eyesight isn't what it used to be either, but if you need font this damn large perhaps you should look into some glasses, or just changing the font size on your browser rather than making everyone else adjust theirs.

On another note, how come the links I've already clicked on are still showing up as dark as the ones I haven't? I don't see anything in the settings to change this. I have no clue what I've read and what I haven't. I use Chrome if that matters.

meg: So you might have noticed a few changes around here. For your edification, here's a quick summary.

Meh. Okay I guess, but thank God I can turn it off.

2) We bumped up the font size a bit on headlines. Drew's eyes ain't what they used to be.

Add me to the list of "but everyone will see what I'm browsing at work!" complaints. Did you consider this? Yes I know I can use my browser setting to make it smaller again, but that screws up every other site I read. Yes, I know I could install an add-in to remember site-specific zoom settings, but should I really have to install an add-on to read your site? How about a preference setting for this too? Alternatively, how about Drew (and the rest of you old, blind people) buy some freaking reading glasses.

iii) We're increasing the maximum limits on images in threads - both dimensions and filesize. You can now post an image up to 850x1500px, with a filesize up to approx 500k. You can still link to images larger than that.

This is great - in theory. Fark's image restrictions have been kind of a joke for a while now, but this also falls under the "everyone will see what I'm browsing issue" especially since NSFW is not a universally agreed-upon standard. Perhaps a setting to display all images at 50%? Or a maximum image size?

δ) We're also increasing the minimum width of our page to support the new image sizes, and because over 95% of you have screens that wide anyway.

This. is. awesome.

blue) We're changing all contest threads (Photoshop, Farktography, etc) to automatically default to showing only the contest entries (vote-enabled comments), to keep the emphasis on the contest itself.

The way some people get so uptight about the purity of contest threads has always baffled me. For them, fine whatever, but its good that I can turn this off.

Yes, I will get over it, but these are some things you can do to help me get over it faster.

If you use the No Squint browser extension it can do a bit more than just remembering magnification/shrinkage on a per site basis.

If you open it up you can set things like:

"Full Zoom Level" = 65
"Text Zoom Level" = 205

This shrinks every thing and then makes text really large which mostly gives a total result of shrinking the size of pictures.

I mean I paid good money for these bifocals so I could see things close up, but now I can let people on the other side of the office see the comments too!

meg: postnobills: This is great - in theory. Fark's image restrictions have been kind of a joke for a while now, but this also falls under the "everyone will see what I'm browsing issue" especially since NSFW is not a universally agreed-upon standard. Perhaps a setting to display all images at 50%? Or a maximum image size?

If NSFW is a big issue at your workplace, you can also check the preference in myFark to "Convert images to links, leave other HTML formatting intact". Then you can click to open only those you feel are safe.

Yeah that's a useful option to have, but images are only really a problem if my boss/coworkers can see what they are. A user setting like "reduce all images to: _link _thumbnail _preview(100px) _small(250px) _med(500px) _original" would be a much better way to implement that, IMHO. And I don't think that would be too hard to do?

How?

Upper right hand corner, you'll see an icon that looks like a wrench.

Click on it.

About a third of the way down, you'll see an option that says "zoom."

Reduce the page 10%. Fark'll be just like it's always been. No other pages will be affected.

You can also do the Ctrl-"+/-" thing.

Not sure if that affects all pages, though.

Using the customize function, ONLY affects the individual page.

Onyx Serpent: even on my widescreen monitor the current minimum size is significantly larger than my preferred web browser size

Yeah, this part of the plan seems not particularly well thought through: Maybe I'm atypical but I don't know how -anyone- browses text-heavy websites full screen. The aspect ratio is just... off. And harder to read. Maybe it's just because I am old, and spent / spend a lot of time reading books (those are the papery things you used to get in bookstores... bookstores were places... oh nevermind). So, yes, while 95% of the users have a wide screen monitor, we don't -all- use it -all- to browse.

Handsome B. Wonderful: You should make the smart and funny buttons useful

I said it in the thread when they were introduced, I submitted it as a farkback, I've said it since, no one cares:

LOL / THIS / DUMBASS+TROLL, then add a count for each tag under the headline.

Add a count of posters in the thread that you have favorited / ignored, and Fark would be a -much- more interesting and efficient place, I would bet.

In fact, I would pay $5/m to have that data displayed to my login.

Wonder if there's a way to do it with a plug in or something. Hmmm.

/ still think the bigger pics isn't exactly a win, but not complaining

No, I haven't heard of them. I'm not completely blind, but my vision is quite limited. I can read a computer screen as long as I can adjust the font and be able to sit close to the screen. I can read books as long as I hold the book close to my face and if they're available, I opt for the large print version. At my workplace we use the old CRT monitors (dumb terminals) so it's necessary for me to have my face roughly 4-6 inches from the monitor in order to read what's on it.

However, I cannot read menus at fast food restaurants. If someone is more than a few feet from me I won't know who they are unless they're speaking and I know their voice. And forget honking your horn as a greeting as you drive by. I won't know who the hell you are. When I go grocery shopping I need to be right next to the shelf or dairy/meat/deli cases in order to locate what I want to buy.

While I was screwing around looking at extensions I noticed another Firefox extension that literally made me squeal like a little girl.

If you hover your mouse over an image link or an image thumbnail, it opens the image in a popup at as close to full size as your monitor can support.

My best buddy from college is legally blind as well, and he keeps a tiny little pocket magnifier on him at all times. He has to have his eye around two inches from what he's reading.

Once, we were in New Orleans at Pat O'Brien's for lunch and he was using his magnifier to read the menu and some drunk at another table wondered (very loudly) why that guy was smelling the menu.

I don't know how anyone does anything at or near full screen except gaming and stuff with lots of buttons (read: Photoshop, Maya). Being able to see if someone sends you a PM in a game, what the countdown on the Steam sale is, and browse Fark at the same time is awesome. Thus I want my Windows to be actual windows not screens.

I ended up just turning off the right column; I don't use it anyway. It'd be easier if the site itself was less tables and more divs. Then I'd just float that column underneath everything and not totally turn it off, otherwise it is currently too much work.

This is all I've put in Stylish, to make that icky horizontal scroll bar go away:

I gave a second louder squeal when I learned that while you hover over a link and the image is popped up, you can just hit "s" on the keyboard to save the full sized image, without ever having to open the link to it.

This completely revolutionizes the internet!

A) On all our headline pages (Main, Geek, etc.) you can now hover over the headline and share to Facebook or Twitter. It also shows an easy link directly to the article. If you don't like it, you can turn it off in your Preferences page in myFark.

grumble grumble, the default should be set to [OFF] ... turns off ... continues farking.

2) We bumped up the font size a bit on headlines. Drew's eyes ain't what they used to be.

Didn't notice (I override font size & face on all sites, arial 14px for everyone baby)

iii) We're increasing the maximum limits on images in threads - both dimensions and filesize. You can now post an image up to 850x1500px, with a filesize up to approx 500k. You can still link to images larger than that.

IIRC the filesize limit used to be higher (I have animated GIF files in my fark folder that I've posted before, but recently couldn't post, maybe they can once again see the light of day.)

δ) We're also increasing the minimum width of our page to support the new image sizes, and because over 95% of you have screens that wide anyway.

1920x1080 here, didn't notice anything

blue) We're changing all contest threads (Photoshop, Farktography, etc) to automatically default to showing only the contest entries

I don't visit those threads enough to notice.

If you're using Firefox, download the No Squint add-on. It allows you to allows adjust the text-only and full-page (both text and images) zoom levels as well as color settings both globally (for all sites) and per site.

You can also opt to change the font size in your browser.

I don't use Firefox (ewww, too slow), and the idea that I'd need to download an addon just to make a site readable bothers me. It bothers me enough that I had to shrink the size in Chrome so I could read comments and headlines without getting a serious headache.

Like I said - it makes far more sense, both in the short and long term, to simply let users pick their display font size, rather than to make the majority of users' eyes bleed.

File size still isn't quite sufficient to post the ginormous version of this:

Well, obviously you don't use Firefox if you think it's too slow.

Chrome is fine, I have it installed, but it's extension facilities are entirely too limited for the really cool stuff to run. Perhaps in a few more versions.

Love the changes. Installed No Squint just to fool around with it. And I see that GD is busy taking over the thread. As it should be. So I'll be off them.

TheNyquilKid: *Ctrl -*

Looks great guys.

That was the first thing I did. After hitting Ctrl-0 fifty times when I first loaded it while muttering 'Who the fark was farking with fark on my PC?'

Big font ugly. Ctrl - elegant solution for ugly big font.

20/10 vision, I can now read Fark from the other side of the yard.

God I love bigger font sizes. The shrinkage of font sizes by web designers always bugged me. Farking morons.

I am OK with this.

scottydoesntknow: meg: iii) We're increasing the maximum limits on images in threads - both dimensions and filesize. You can now post an image up to 850x1500px, with a filesize up to approx 500k. You can still link to images larger than that.

And the masses rejoiced

*YAY*

Font too big? If you're using Firefox click on 'View' - 'Zoom' - 'Zoom Out'. Better now?

Sgt Oddball: OMG! Best line of a magnificent series!

:D

Almost anything Quarles said was comic gold.

I'm just sorry that I can't post this one pic of him saying "She just sassed you, son!" to Raylan.

That said, bring on Justified's fourth season! Love it!

Ha ha! Took me about half an hour, but I managed understand enough CSS that I was able to fix the font size issue. No offense, but it's just a wee bit too big for me.

I'm over it.
