pudding7: I'll get over it, but for now I'm on a rampage.

What the hell kind of focus group are you guys running to determine the best font size? Are you swinging by the Old Folks Home and asking them what they think? What segment of the audience is demanding 18 point font and fewer headlines on their screen at a time?

All he needs is a guestbook, then we would know what types of people are attracted to Fark. Concise feedback from any visitor, registered or not.

/Long live the guestbook!

Chariset: Another vote for the option to adjust the text size. The headlines and comments are just too big.

Seriously. I'm all about having the option to make stuff bigger. But don't force it on us.

I'd love it if there was an preference option to stick with the old font size

I can't even see my whole Fark screen unless I scroll over.
This is the site I spend most of my time on throughout the day. I'm just a little pissed that I'm not able to see it all now.
Please. Fix this for the love of god.

Put me down on the 'not bad' list. biatching about the very minor font change seems a little ridiculous. If anything, you should all be biatching that GD has only posted one (new and embiggened) picture.

I Really Like The Bigger Font Size!

I mean I paid good money for these bifocals so I could see things close up, but now I can let people on the other side of the office see the comments too!

meg: postnobills: This is great - in theory. Fark's image restrictions have been kind of a joke for a while now, but this also falls under the "everyone will see what I'm browsing issue" especially since NSFW is not a universally agreed-upon standard. Perhaps a setting to display all images at 50%? Or a maximum image size?

If NSFW is a big issue at your workplace, you can also check the preference in myFark to "Convert images to links, leave other HTML formatting intact". Then you can click to open only those you feel are safe.

Yeah that's a useful option to have, but images are only really a problem if my boss/coworkers can see what they are. A user setting like "reduce all images to: _link _thumbnail _preview(100px) _small(250px) _med(500px) _original" would be a much better way to implement that, IMHO. And I don't think that would be too hard to do?

Upper right hand corner, you'll see an icon that looks like a wrench.

Click on it.

About a third of the way down, you'll see an option that says "zoom."

Reduce the page 10%. Fark'll be just like it's always been. No other pages will be affected.

You can also do the Ctrl-"+/-" thing.

Not sure if that affects all pages, though.

Using the customize function, ONLY affects the individual page.

Onyx Serpent: even on my widescreen monitor the current minimum size is significantly larger than my preferred web browser size

Yeah, this part of the plan seems not particularly well thought through: Maybe I'm atypical but I don't know how -anyone- browses text-heavy websites full screen. The aspect ratio is just... off. And harder to read. Maybe it's just because I am old, and spent / spend a lot of time reading books (those are the papery things you used to get in bookstores... bookstores were places... oh nevermind). So, yes, while 95% of the users have a wide screen monitor, we don't -all- use it -all- to browse.

Handsome B. Wonderful: You should make the smart and funny buttons useful

I said it in the thread when they were introduced, I submitted it as a farkback, I've said it since, no one cares:

LOL / THIS / DUMBASS+TROLL, then add a count for each tag under the headline.

Add a count of posters in the thread that you have favorited / ignored, and Fark would be a -much- more interesting and efficient place, I would bet.

In fact, I would pay $5/m to have that data displayed to my login.

Wonder if there's a way to do it with a plug in or something. Hmmm.

/ still think the bigger pics isn't exactly a win, but not complaining
// over it
/// fix quoting on the mobile interface!

MaudlinMutantMollusk: Bathia_Mapes: Thanks. I have bad eyesight myself (legally blind) and wasn't aware of that FF extension. Off to install it now.

Ever hear of a company called HumanWare?

/I used to work for them
//did tech support for blind users

No, I haven't heard of them. I'm not completely blind, but my vision is quite limited. I can read a computer screen as long as I can adjust the font and be able to sit close to the screen. I can read books as long as I hold the book close to my face and if they're available, I opt for the large print version. At my workplace we use the old CRT monitors (dumb terminals) so it's necessary for me to have my face roughly 4-6 inches from the monitor in order to read what's on it.

However, I cannot read menus at fast food restaurants. If someone is more than a few feet from me I won't know who they are unless they're speaking and I know their voice. And forget honking your horn as a greeting as you drive by. I won't know who the hell you are. When I go grocery shopping I need to be right next to the shelf or dairy/meat/deli cases in order to locate what I want to buy.

In short, I make Mr Magoo look good. :-D

HairBolus: As someone with somewhat bad eyesight I run the No Squint browser extension that remembers magnification/shrinking on a per-site basis and so I literally cannot understand font size problems.

Some people biatch pointlessly about a problem, but you, Sir or Madam, are much more awesome than those people.

Thanks. I have bad eyesight myself (legally blind) and wasn't aware of that FF extension. Off to install it now.

It's pretty damn awesome, especially that whole part where it remembers how you prefer text enlarged or shrunk on each website. All credit to HairBolus for sharing a solution instead of just biatching.

While I was screwing around looking at extensions I noticed another Firefox extension that literally made me squeal like a little girl.

If you hover your mouse over an image link or an image thumbnail, it opens the image in a popup at as close to full size as your monitor can support.

dl.dropbox.com

Here, I was just hovering my mouse over the text link, although Windows doesn't show the mouse pointer in the screen shot. After a fraction of a second, up popped the animated gif that tomWright linked to.

My best buddy from college is legally blind as well, and he keeps a tiny little pocket magnifier on him at all times. He has to have his eye around two inches from what he's reading.

Once, we were in New Orleans at Pat O'Brien's for lunch and he was using his magnifier to read the menu and some drunk at another table wondered (very loudly) why that guy was smelling the menu.

This amused us much more than it really should have.

Width is a bit much. I never maximize windows or use full screen (aside from watching video) and now Fark is a lot wider than most other websites which means I have to keep the window wider than necessary just for this site, or scroll horizontally.

I don't know how anyone does anything at or near full screen except gaming and stuff with lots of buttons (read: Photoshop, Maya). Being able to see if someone sends you a PM in a game, what the countdown on the Steam sale is, and browse Fark at the same time is awesome. Thus I want my Windows to be actual windows not screens.

I ended up just turning off the right column; I don't use it anyway. It'd be easier if the site itself was less tables and more divs. Then I'd just float that column underneath everything and not totally turn it off, otherwise it is currently too much work.

This is all I've put in Stylish, to make that icky horizontal scroll bar go away:

td#rightCol, #rightCol {display:none;}
#leftCol {width:100%}
#header, #container, body, #headerMenuContainer {min-width:900px;}

Grables'Daughter: meg: iii) We're increasing the maximum limits on images in threads - both dimensions and filesize. You can now post an image up to 850x1500px, with a filesize up to approx 500k. You can still link to images larger than that.

Larger images?
