It is prison after all.

Not to worry because, as the article pointed out, "Umoja was formed in 1993, but their future is in doubt because of cuts in state funding." I'm wondering why funding cuts would impact this? Do they have paid choir master teaching them how to sing? It's not like they'll be doing anything anywhere else for the next 15 to 25 years or anything. Why don't some of the geniuses working in the prison system figure out a way to turn this to generating revenue for a victim fund -- like maybe recording a couple albums of choir music?

Lastly, all the choir members are black -- how did that happen?

Ah, never really thought the World Choir Games would make Fark, pleasantly surprised.

Also, what are some of the old music programs in prison? I seem to recall it was Charlie Daniels or David Allen Coe (or both?) who sponsored prison music programs, among others I am sure?

Serious Comment (I know, I know, it is fark, but hell I will make it anyway):
If we consider there to be correctional and punitive aspects of prison, I would rather the folks on the inside be doing something for their minds rather than pumping iron or sitting in isolation, becoming even more sociopathic before they might be released.

Carry on

Exactly. If someone commits a crime - ANY CRIME - it is not just because they are bad people, but also because they are completely beyond hope. Any attempts to rehabilitate these people is an example of weakness and will result in more crime. We don't need these people back into society and contributing, what we need is to spend large amounts of taxpayer money keeping entire demographics of people locked behind bars and never give them a second chance.

Even though crime rates and instances of violence have trended downwards steadily over the last two decades, I like you am still horribly scared of the outside world and wet my bed every night in fear over imagined dangers. We must do all that is possible to punish these people and deprive them of skills they can use in the workforce, while simultaneously making as many nonviolent "offenses" as possible illegal. It is only then that we will truly be free.
