Global warming is a threat which could be conquered if it were not for capitalists and religious fundamentalists, who are each more interested in advancing their own selfish interests no matter the costs to humanity as a whole.

It's actually raining in Texas today, so we got that going for us, which is nice.
My yard is gone though, there isn't much grass left after the horrendous drought last year, which "technically" we are not out of yet.

Yes, it is odd that people refuse to change a fundamental human behavior because of a threat they don't perceive to be real

I've actually seen some cheap potting soils that used styrofoam pellets instead of pearlite.

Potting soil contains no "dirt". Sorry to disappoint.

Geisel said most similar fires nationwide were caused by people using their potted plants as ashtrays.

In my experience this is better described as "some jackleg using your potted plant as an ashtray".

Dry peat moss, and coconut husks or other tindery material are more likely to be using in planting than fuel peat.

Compost and hay bales can spontaneously combust at high temps, as well.

Protip: if your potting soil has styrofoam in it, it's crap. You want perlite or vermiculite to keep your soil loose.

Only once it has been dried. The peat bogs have been wet for millions of years. If they're dry now, that's aproblem.

Compost fires are not terribly uncommon. Usually you see it with larger piles, though.

Given enough nitrogen, oxygen, and enough moisture in the air, some of the heat producing bacteria that typically eat organic matter go nuts.

Why don't the little farkers die when it gets really hot but before, you know, fire? Are they related to the guys that hang out in ocean thermal vents?

It actually happens more often at 70 to 80 degrees ambient temperature when the hay or compost is damp and packed too tightly. Bacterial fermentation is the source of the heat within the hay and it can get really hot and then go up really quickly.

CSB: I work for my family's nursery/landscaping company and had a huge mound of mulch flame up while I was shoveling from it. as far as we could figure my shoveling exposed a pocket of heat to enough oxygen to get is started and foom no more arm hair or eyebrows for a while /CSB

Compost piles occasionally spontaneously combust, I'm told, hasn't been explained to me though, as thermophiles typically only go to c. 160o F.

This Styrofoam in soil has me bewildered: Wouldn't it just float to the top when watered?

//Perlite as we know it was an accidentally discovered, it is clay. Attempting to use it as a casting material caused it to pop like popcorn!

It's annoying enough when people do that to plants in public, but I think I would go on a murderous rampage if someone tried to put a butt out in our basil.

My incomplete understanding is that they do die in the center of the pile where the heat is greatest but the ones closer to the edges keep on making more heat which makes it's way into the center.

A gardening group I belong to just sent out a reminder to make sure to keep your compost piles damp during the extreme heat to keep those puppies from blazing up.

I've seen a compost pile fire happen twice in my general area, but those were really big piles of agricultural waste where the heat builds up over a large volume.

The surprising thing here is that tfa makes it sound like this wasn't a very big volume of stuff to begin with. I'm guessing somebody went nuts with too much fertilizer and it let the bacteria go on a rampage above and beyond what you would see in just some organic matter by itself.

One of the most common cases where piles will ignite on their own are piles of ground up tree limbs you get when tree trimming crews come through to clear out the area around power lines and then runs everything through a shredder. All that ground up green wood provides plenty of moisture and plenty of nitrogen. Those piles get steaming hot fast, even in the dead of winter.

I figured it was probably something like that, but I would think that as the inner ones died, the outer ones would generate more attenuated heat. Guess not.
