elkraf: Paterno didn't want to be a stool pigeon.

I keep hearing things like "well Paterno was old and didn't understand child abuse".

The Penn State fans will say anything to reduce their cognitive dissonance. I'm surprised they're not still trying to lionize Sandusky with excuses about how he did so many good things with the Second Mile charity...

Oh you're reaching. Around the end of the day is when most of the filthy news stories come. It's how a news story becomes "sticky"; you don't remember all the stuff that was shot out early in the day.

I am comforted that Paterno is dead and is probably in hell getting raped by Satan.

Good point. A cold shower may induce shivering, which would be similar to a hummer.

or
BUD DWYER CENTER FOR GUN SAFETY

To be fair, Bud practiced good gun safety and proper trigger control. He aimed it at its intended target and shot to kill, harming nobody else in the process.

Left a bit of a mess though.

Children should not be subjected to homosexual rape. They should be confined to inadequately ventilated and cramped workshops so they can make shiatty shoes for 18 hours a day without food while they aren't allowed to even get up to take a crap or piss, all for about enough to by a slice of bread each day.

cgobla: I really gave Joe the benefit of the doubt with all this but after seeing the report it looks like he was a main character in the cover up. I have been very surprised by all the comments online on new stories of people still defending him like oh its not that bad his good stuff cancels it out. This attitude is what is responsible for the cover up in the first place.

"good stuff"... like telling over-grown teenagers to play a child's game?

Maybe now finally JoePa's defenders will quit showering him with praise. They'll probably rhythmically slap themselves for being so trusting.

I would buy this--that he just didn't "get" child abuse like that. Also that since he didn't actually see anything, he was able to convince himself that the other guy was mistaken about what was actually going on, and that "maybe" it wasn't really like that.

But I can't excuse that he knew something was going on all those years, must have seen Sandusky with other boys, and never made a peep about it, and never made any effort to either get to the bottom of it, or at least have Sandusky removed from the campus. How could you look kids in the eye when you saw them coming around with Sandusky, knowing that there was something unsavory going on, and that you were allowing it to happen on your turf?

I think the dude was more in denial than actively trying to cover up anything. If he'd really thought about it, the damage done by ignoring it was a lot worse than what would have been done by just getting rid of that old pervert, even if everything had come out then.

Well, the guilt probably killed him, so I guess he paid for his mistakes.

/Puns unintentional. This are serious post.

He was well-acquainted with cover-ups, having created them for his players several documented times. If the coverup is effective, there is no damage, and the coverup in this case lasted15 years. Hell, if Sandusky had just behaved after being fired, the coverup would have lasted indefinitely.

This. It's easy to SAY you'd turn in someone you worked with for 40 years and has their career intertwined so closely with yours and whom you never knew to have done anything illegal on hearing someone else say that they "were doing sexual things" with a kid. It's a lot tougher to actually do it.

It's very easy to say what should have been done now that we know there were more victims and that there was, in fact, rape involved. It's harder to say that you should convict someone that you feel you know well after a secondhand, gross-parts-omitted story which is inexplicably told to you as a football coach rather than police.

2012-07-13 02:56:14 PM
Not to mention that if he forced himself to think about it, then he'd have to realize how long Second Mile had existed and that Sandusky had had unfettered access to boys for decades and no one had thought anything of it.

Why? Because you think that anyone that acknowledges human frailty rather than blindly stating obvious condemnations is going to do something inappropriate to a kid?

It's one thing to support the Miami Heat and downplay Jordan's place in NBA history, but this is just insane IAmRight, how can you ever defend a guy like Paterno? Come on man, this is not sports, it's pretty farked up to troll us on a topic like this.

2012-07-13 03:41:50 PM
Pedophillia is not a human frailty.
Enslaving children to make sneakers is not a better world.
Putting a nike swoosh on the uniforms of football players, building a multimillion dollar side show next to a university, and running a child rape cover up is a crime.

Pointing that out should be everyone's responsibility.

I think they're hurt and desperately wishing it wasn't true. Paterno did do a lot of good things, but they certainly don't cancel out facilitating child rape. I think it's more the opposite, that this cancels out the good things.

Jesus Christ, yes it is all about you and your creepy insecurities. The facts from the report show Paterno was not just in denial, he was actively discouraging any action taken towards Sandusky without HIS blessing.

It's all right there, in the report, that you have obviously not read.

Yeah, you've been shown to be an impartial diviner of the facts from reports, based on your "nuke it from orbit" even before we knew anything about the case.

And I was on the right side of it. From the start. But it ain't about me, it's about facts, not bullsh*t suppositions like "He probably didn't even know what man rape was DURRR" or "He was in denial HURR".

See how everyone (well, everyone who has read the report, not you obviously) is calling for the Death Penalty for PSU football? Facts are facts, homey. Massage it all you want, it's still the football program's power that made everyone cover the rapes up. Nuke it.

2012-07-13 04:05:42 PM
And it does need to be nuked.
If it had been the swim team, we would nuke it.
If it had been the Mont Alto Campus birling team, they would nuke it.
If it was the McKeesport campus Chess club, it would be nuked.
Or are you saying because it's football, therefore Hurr!?
No. Nuke it.
Nuke it for the 15 years it went on with out being reported.

I have one of those blind Pedterno worshippers here in my office (a Penn State Alum of course).

Every day it's JoePa this, JoePa that: "He was NOT RESPONSIBLEEEeE!!111WHARRRRGARRBBBLLL!!!"

Even with the latest news, he is keeps saying "HE WAS NOT RESPONSIBLEEEEE!!!1!1!"

I see the same thing in the message board posts on various news articles, though now the amount has been lessened. How the holy hell do these people have such devotion to this man and this program?? If this was my very own grandpa I'd be condemning him over this. Baffling.

I am not trying to rub salt in the wound but I am genuinely curious how you didn't think he was involved? It seemed to me it was obvious he was involved from the beginning. Do you think you had a prejudice because you were a fan of the team?

/Genuinely interested in your perspective.

I guess I just figured he didnt really understand the scope of it and felt he had done what he was suppose to. My husband went to Penn state but i wouldnt say I was a fan. Like in my mind i thought it went something like he reported it to the president/vp etc and then kinda stepped away from the whole thing and trusted them. but after the report it shows he was in on all the discussions and decisions.
