a 'drop' typically refers to when the bassline's relative volume increases and typically, everything else drops out.

often characterized by a 'boom' like sound.

I've always assumed that "drop" was a reference to the needle drop when djaying.

That's where the term may have started from, but now it generally means the point where the heavier (or main) beat kicks in.
