It is a measure of how low we've sunk that designating yourself as the principled opposition means you don't want to murder the president's family.

Why exactly do people dislike Michelle Obama? She's charmed heads of state the world over, done superb work rebuilding the USAs international image, and has tried to make kids less fat.

Isn't that pretty much a perfect First Lady?

Captain Horatio Mindblower: I'm glad this dillweed is getting in trouble for this. He'll be reassigned at least, and maybe fired, and possibly even prosecuted.

Still, there's no reason for pretending, as some of the reportage does, that this was a plot to kill the First Lady. This guy is a would-be Ted Nugent, not a would-be John Hinckley.

/ who had a vision

Possibly. But the Secret Service has had it's collective sense of humor surgically removed, and this guy will undergo some rather long and unpleasant questioning.

And I'm OK with that. Don't threaten the First Lady. ANY First Lady. They didn't get elected, and they tend to have good causes, like "eat your vegetables and exercise" or "read more books" or similar. (What was Barbra Bush's cause? I seriously don't remember, but I'm sure it was friendly, benign, and common-sense.)

I think most of it is reflected hate from how much they hate the president. However, I truly believe that Michelle having the audacity to tell Bible-Belt parents that feeding their children processed garbage and letting the TV babysit them instead of excercising really struck a blow to their egos.

As far as this guy goes, I think the safe thing to do would be to waterboard him for awhile just to make sure their aren't any co-conspirators still loose.

She's also the wife of the guy who wants to increase funding to the cops while running against a guy who thinks cops are overpaid.

The answer of course is because she's black.

Ummmm, in the last three weeks Freeperland has had article after article about how they're "ashamed" of their country after the healthcare ruling. It's a turn of phrase.

Please tell me that you're able to comprehend the difference between saying "I am ashamed our country did X" and "until this moment, I have never been proud of anything that our country has done".

You know they're logically completely different, right?

That one means you're ashamed of something, but could very well be proud of other things. And that the other statement means that there is NOTHING you can be proud of.

So you think it's within the realm of possibility that she treated this guy so poorly that he wanted to kill her?

You think it's more likely that Michelle Obama is secretly "a twat", than it is that a cop is being an overemotional bully?

It must be an interesting view of reality, to see everything "within the realm of possibility" as equally likely.

Way to cherry-pick a sentence or two and miss the point completely. Being that I kick a buck to bums occasionally and help the blind across the street, I'll give you another go and I'll type m o r e s l o w l y and very literally this time so maybe you'll get it:

Perhaps this officer said something off the cuff to his partner, without literal intent because of having to deal with circumstances that were marginally outside the course of his normal duties (i.e. "venting"). In light of the person he was talking about, he should have kept his big mouth shut, grinned and bore it, but he did not and someone overheard it and reported it.

And what I'm saying is more likely is that the trigger for all this is likely banal rather than some right-wing/racist/political agenda driven/inside-job/manifesto-writing murder plot against the first lady.

Also, please do not summarize this as "...this officer said...literal intent...murder...the first lady."

They hate her, in part, because she DOESN'T fit the stereotype of black women that they cherish in their pinheads.

I volunteered for the Obama campaign in '08, and some of us had the pleasure to meet Mrs. Obama when she came to town to speak for her husband. If anything, that was what cemented my support for Obama. Bad men simply don't catch women like her, and they certainly don't keep them as happy as she obviously is. In person, she's a total class act, and radiates warmth, intelligence, integrity, and genuine interest in the well-being of others.

No wonder Republicans hate her so hard.

Those statements are only "stupid" to stupid people. Real patriotism requires you to assess your country in an honest manner. Toby Keith doesn't do that. Do I wish she hadn't said that so as not to stoke the stupid fire? Maybe. But it's far more patriotic to question our course than to say, "America, fark yeah."

Guess I need to ride the short bus then, because I find it stupid that, as the wife of the president of the united states, she would make comments like that.

If you're going to be the type of person who attributes pride and shame to the entire United States (as she does, when she states that she's proud of the country for electing Barack Obama), then if she's never in her adult life been proud of the USA before it means...

She wasn't proud of the diplomatic role that the US played in the tearing down of the Berlin wall (1989).

She wasn't proud of the leading role that the US took in negotiating the Dayton peace accord which brought an end to the war between Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia (a war who's combined casualties exceeded 100,000).

I could go on, but I'm not gonna spend that much time listing it out. You don't need to be proud of everything America does. There's a metric ass ton of stuff that we need to do way better about.

But to say that there's nothing in the last 30 years to be proud of about America, besides the election of Barack Obama... I'm sorry, but it's stupid. It shows either a complete lack of education or a willful disdain for the country.

garandman1a: OK, we can all agree that she is a complete a-hole. If she was never proud of her country until they elected her husband (whether you like him or not) this is someone that is completely contemptable. However we as a country voted for her husband, they are married, deal with it.

I am horrified by everything Barack Obama has done as president TO me (he has done nothng FOR me) and I find his wife an annoying scold. However much that may be, I'd be the first to call for the death penalty (slow and painful) for anyone who even tried to kill either of them. And that's not just because Joe Biden would be the president.

The people elected him legally & constitutionally. She comes as part of the deal. Why does one person think they have the right to change the will of the people in such a manner? If it were an illegal power grab, thats different but not her fault. You want to (justifiably in my opinion) impeach him for something he's done in office, go ahead. But do not physically harm them. And again, the crimes of her husband are not her fault.

OK, I can turn her off when she comes on my TV, and thats the only way I would ever encounter her. You work with her and can't turn off the TV? Then get a different job.

What has President Obama done TO you? What impeachable crimes has he committed and did you feel the same about W?

"For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country, and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change."

Flag waving is popular on both sides of the aisle, especially by politicians, but conservatives in this country partly define themselves by how much they love America. I'm sure there are a lot of people who don't like her because she's black, but quotes like this are what die hard conservatives think all filthy liberals have in their hearts... that liberals are ashamed by the country that conservatives love.

Don't get me wrong, I'm flaming liberal and I have no problems with Michelle Obama and it's annoying to see people get so foamy about her, but the loathing the right has for her doesn't come out of right field. Michelle made some REALLY stupid public statements that drew that fire, and Elephants never forget (get it? Elephants? Republicans? I had a family incident where a mentally ill relative made threats against the admin. This was sheer puff but the threat of their imprisonment was quite real. The Secret Service takes their job very seriously.

Now this man was in a position to do the crime, had the weapon to do the crime, and the plan. He was quite capable of using a firearm, as per his training and in close proximity would be very lethal.

I feel prosecution to the fullest extent is warranted here. The Union can protect his job sure but his liberty ....not so much.

I absolutely hated Bush - he was terrible as a President and as a guy, seemed to be fairly clueless. He seemed to be a good husband and father, though, but that's not relevant to the discussion.

I never thought anything particularly bad about Laura Bush. In fact, I don't remember anyone thinking Laura was bad. She wanted kids to read more, wanted parents to read to their kids more, and worked hard to raise awareness of women's health issues. No one disliked her, and no one - right or left - said anything particularly bad about her. Anyone on the left who did say bad things about her was fairly marginalized.

But the Right has gone nuts about Michelle - and it's not just basement-dwellers. Fox News commentators, Republican politicians...big names have said horrible things about her because she had the audacity to suggest that kids might need to eat a healthier diet. Why does the Right get a free pass to say these sorts of things about someone who has been fairly apolitical and certainly no more political than any other First Lady?

The guy did more damage to himself than anything else. "Making threads against the President's family" is significantly worse than even "has a tendency to have suspects trip down stairs" in terms of "things that will end your career as a police officer."

The Secret Service will also be very un-entertained.
