grinding_journalist: jjwars1: and his music sucks.

I love people who feel that they HAVE to add this when talking about MJ's personal life. What do they have to do with each other?

Also, you're just wrong. Simply wrong. You might not care for it, but it doesn't suck. It is unarguably, some of the best pop music ever created. (Not every track of course, but the blanket "his music sucks" implies that there's nothing good at all.)

Uchiha_Cycliste: ExperianScaresCthulhu:

The mom was the daughter.

I have absolutely no idea what this statement means.

It means there was no daughter, ever. The mom wanted someone to talk to, and for whatever reason, wanted to "be a kid" on the internet. Why would a parent grant their 12 yr old daughter to talk to random grown men online? ESPECIALLY after a divorce? That would scream "Imma do something bad to get back at my parents" to me, or anyone with common sense.

Desmo: I have often wanted to friends girls.

I feel like this is the thought process my penis goes through.

eddiesocket: What did this have to do with lost kids on the street?

He's just extrapolating he mindset that this situation demonstrates. It's a bit hyperbolic, and doesn't DIRECTLY apply to this situation, but I can't fault him for feeling that way in general. In an era where a single man on a playground with a child of a different race can get the cops called on him by overzealous parents, and when a single ACCUSATION of impropriety (against a male, especially) can RUIN YOUR LIFE, I understand exercising caution around kids. If I see a child alone on a playground, screaming for its mother, I'm not going anywhere near it. That may seem like me being a heartless bastard, but I'd just as soon call 911 and report an abandoned child. I'm not talking to, touching, or making eye contact with ANY child by themselves. Ever. The wife can handle that.

He's not "extrapolating". His comments are wholly unrelated to the topic at hand.

Got it, chief. "No charges filed". Hey, I'm "not dead yet". Looks like I'll live forever. But I'll let you get back to your investigation.

Uchiha_Cycliste: farkityfarker: Uchiha_Cycliste: Nope, nothing at all suspicious about a 42 year old man who wants to be friends with a 12 year old girl. It totally makes sense, they probably have so much in common and so much to talk about. Like I'll bet they both like MPL:FIM. And they probably both like 12 year old girls.

But it was perfectly innocent when Michael Jackson had slumber parties with boys of that age, wasn't it?

Honestly, for the most part it was. I think MJ simply never grew up. I think he was mentally and emotionally a 12 year old and behaved as such. I think he probably touched *some* kids, and that he probably had a few sleep overs that were totally innocent through and through. I think he just wanted some friends he could talk to and relate too, and because his emotional growth was so stunted, adults couldn't really be his friends.

\this guy though, I have no doubt he deserved a punch in the face.
\\probably also a cockpunch with a chocotaco.

You've obviously never read the transcripts from the kid he settled with for millions. Its extremely graphic and makes it very clear his interest in the kid was sexual.

Grables'Daughter: See, here's the thing.

FTA: No charges are in place.

I am wondering if dad took justice into his own hands (or fists, as it were), and somehow screwed up any chance at an investigation by police here, and now the guy will do this to some other child.

exactly. The punchee acknowledged he was up to no good "[T]he man told police he deserved to be punched", but he is likely to avoid criminal liability because he didn't yet commit a crime...unless they can prove he used the internet with the intent of soliciting an inappropriate relationship with the girl.

Are you really arguing that the father's DYI "sting" would be more or equally as effective as the cops' sting? TFA said no charges were filed, not me.

^That's not true at all. If this was a police sting operation they would have told every news station for 1000's miles that they apprehended the worlds worst pedophile. He would be sitting in the slammer right now.

Marisyana: I don't even see why they even bother having a minimum age for Facebook. There's no way to enforce it. I have several nieces all under 13 who have accounts, and all their friends have accounts. What makes it even worse is that they post pretty provocative pictures--I came across a picture of one of my 11-year-old nieces that disturbed me because she was glammed up and looked 16. When I called her dad, my BIL, he said "Oh, it's no big deal, they all do that." He also told me that he "trusts her" and doesn't monitor her FB use. DUDE, SHE'S ELEVEN AND TAKING PICTURES OF HERSELF WITH MAKEUP ON DOING DUCKFACE AND WEARING A CAMISOLE AND POSTING ABOUT WHAT BOYS SHE'D LIKE TO FARK. SHE'S IN THE FARKING SIXTH GRADE. WHAT THE FARK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?

/exactly what I yelled at him
//think he's checking it now

Our family has an alt-Facebook account that has no friends. We use it to check on the kids Facebook accounts frequently to make sure they still have the privacy settings set to "friends only".

One of the kids changed his privacy settings, his parents shut down his account for six months. He's been good since then.

I don't doubt it was. I question his frame of mind when he did it. If he realized he was an adult abusing a kid who can't consent legally. Or if for whatever screwed up reason he thought he was a kid and acting out but not realizing he was an adult who should know better.
Absolutely it doesn't forgive or excuse his abuses, but I think he was fairly mentally ill and may have really believed he was a child.

JokerMattly: Bigdogdaddy: Years ago they had something on the internet called ICQ chat. A girl started chatting with me, her mom and dad had just divorced and she needed an adult to talk to (her dad was a raging alcoholic and left her and her mom with nothing and in a mountain of debt). I told her, I would be glad to talk to her if she got her mom's OK, which she did. I became good friends with her mom and talked to her on the phone frequently. I am still friends with her mom and the little girl has grown up to be quite the nice young lady and just graduated college. I'll also add that the girl was and still is probably more intelligent than I am. Not all people who would talk to a kid are perverts, but this guy needed a punch in the face if he was meeting a kid somewhere without her parent's permission. Good on dad.

Odd story, bro.
Also, referring to ICQ as "something we had on the internet years ago." makes me feel decidedly old.

yeah. i remember ICQ. i had a 6-digit #....

Still say poppa shoulda beat this pervert until he was eating all his meals through a straw for the rest of his days.

I am wondering if dad took justice into his own hands (or fists, as it were), and somehow screwed up any chance at an investigation by police here, and now the guy will do this to some other child.

The problem is that the police were not even aware of this guy, much less doing any kind of sting. They were only there because the dad called them. Now at least they know about this guy and can watch him. There were no charges filed because, as others have pointed out, he didn't actually DO anything except to travel to meet the girl. Intent is hard to prove and not punished severely. They only way they could have charged him was if they had let him try something with the girl and I don't think any dad would allow that.

It means there was no daughter, ever. The mom wanted someone to talk to, and for whatever reason, wanted to "be a kid" on the internet. Since he knows both mother and daughter, this is unlikely. It is more likely that the 12 yr old felt the need to talk to a random adult male to see if she could understand her father's actions. Was his behavior normal? Is this what she can expect in a husband when she marries? If mom got left with a mountain of debt, she was probably at work a lot, and since the kid had internet access and skills, she used them to answer her questions. I don't think she was aware of any danger when she started and thus didn't consult her mother first. Sounds pretty normal to me.

cuz a bag with a 6 of Natty Ice, a gamecube and a big black dildo would've looked peculiar?

Not true. They could've easily proved intent by encouraging the creep to tell "the girl" what he was going to do to her when he visited. Dad blew it by trying to make this about a punch instead of a jail sentence.

We do it because people like you have to respond to it or argue that his music does not suck which is completely subjective. There is no right or wrong opinion when it comes to someone's taste in music.

Jackson was pervy.

Even if true, it's extremely inappropriate for an adult to independantly pursue a relationship with a 12 year old without her parents/guardian permission/supervision.

BurnShrike: What I'm gathering from the comments here and in the article is that it's proper "justice" to shoot someone in the face for not actually doing anything, but being creepy around your daughter.

I'm not saying what the guy did is okay, but holy fark some of you people are nuts.

/I'm afraid of Americans

That's nothing. It is an actual policy at Perverted Justice (who tag teamed with NBC to make Chris Hansen a household name) that if you're even suspected of possibly being a pedophile, your family members are fair game. Even if they don't even know about your alleged kiddy-diddling predilections. To them, invasion of privacy is okay as long as you're related to a kiddy-diddler.

/...and thus, my current appeal towards moderation in the Sandusky case ('cuz it's turning out that Paterno was active in the cover-up.)
