I'm not so sure that was the best way to handle the situation. I worry a random punch in the face wont be enough of a deterrent.

The man told police he deserved to be punched, but said he just wanted to friends with the girl.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Innocent until proven guilty, of course, but come on.

Nope, nothing at all suspicious about a 42 year old man who wants to be friends with a 12 year old girl. It totally makes sense, they probably have so much in common and so much to talk about. Like I'll bet they both like MPL:FIM. And they probably both like 12 year old girls.

Father: Now I understand that you want to marry my daughter?

Shabby: [sniffing and coughing] That's right ... yeah... yeah...

Father: Yes, you realize of course that Rosaround is still rather young?

Rosamund: Daddy you make me feel like a child. [she gazes at Shabby fondly]

Shabby: [lasciviously] Oh yeah ... you know... get 'em when they're young eh... eh! OOOOH! Know what I mean eh, oooh! [makes obscene gesture involving elbow]

Father: Well I'm sure you know what I mean, Mr ... er... Mr... er .. er?

Shabby: Shabby... Ken Shabby...

Father: Mr Shabby... I just want to make sure that you'll be able to look after my daughter...

Shabby: Oh yeah, yeah. I'll be able to look after 'er all right sport, eh, know what I mean, eh emggh!

I am wondering if dad took justice into his own hands (or fists, as it were), and somehow screwed up any chance at an investigation by police here, and now the guy will do this to some other child.

I would guess that the Dad didn't keep any of the chat or email that his daughter and the man had, and there really was no evidence. It was a matter of he-said, she-said at this point.

DogPurse: How do you get to Middle Tenn.?

You start in Memphis, and drive east on I40 until you hear banjos and can count the number of teeth in a person's mouth on one hand. So, about exit 126.

Honestly, for the most part it was. I think MJ simply never grew up. I think he was mentally and emotionally a 12 year old and behaved as such. I think he probably touched *some* kids, and that he probably had a few sleep overs that were totally innocent through and through. I think he just wanted some friends he could talk to and relate too, and because his emotional growth was so stunted, adults couldn't really be his friends.

\this guy though, I have no doubt he deserved a punch in the face.

Exactly. Vigilantism is kind of an all-or-nothing proposition. You either figure out a way to resolve the offense permanently, or you bring in the police.

Years ago they had something on the internet called ICQ chat. A girl started chatting with me, her mom and dad had just divorced and she needed an adult to talk to (her dad was a raging alcoholic and left her and her mom with nothing and in a mountain of debt). I told her, I would be glad to talk to her if she got her mom's OK, which she did. I became good friends with her mom and talked to her on the phone frequently. I am still friends with her mom and the little girl has grown up to be quite the nice young lady and just graduated college. I'll also add that the girl was and still is probably more intelligent than I am. Not all people who would talk to a kid are perverts, but this guy needed a punch in the face if he was meeting a kid somewhere without her parent's permission. Good on dad.

That's awesome. The difference is, you were propositioned by the girl to talk and meet because she needed someone. You weren't out on the tubes looking for little girls to go make friends with. I question the intent and morals of the man in the article. You seem awesome though.

I remember when ICQ existed separate of AIM, and was on my NEC Powerplayer LE Pentium 133 running Windows 95A. Those were fun times.

I used to use the hell out of IRC, ICQ, and Yahoo Chat. I blame them for discovering the Furry culture.

The police unfortunately usually do nothing; My daughter was propositioned when she was 9 through email messages that she had no idea what they meant. FBI internet security visited my home, nothing ever came of it. Disgusting it is. Thank the universe for redneck vigilante justice!!

Strictly speaking I had to agree with you.
OTOH, I think he had a child's mindset. Let me preface this next statement by outright condemning his actions. That said, I don't know if he knows that he did anything wrong. If he truly believed himself to be a child, if for some reason he never came into his adult mind, he could very well have seen himself at a 12 year old playing doctor with another 12 year old. Granted, he should certainly have been able to recognize what he was doing and wanting was wrong. More so he should have known there was no way to get away with it, and that it was objectively something that he was not supposed to do. However, like I mentioned, though he should have known it was wrong, he probably felt it was natural and that if he *was* actually physically a pre-teen then what he was doing should have been okay.

See, what I'm thinking is that he would periodically totally forget he was an adult. I really think that he sometimes thought he was a child, truly believed so. And then acted as any child would.

Again, that's not an excuse, but it's what I think was going on.

Finally, that's harsh... he had some righteous tunes. =P

So the father put his daughter up as bait so he could take a free pop at someone? What an a88hole. What if the paedo had turned up seriously unhinged, paranoid, and with a knife or gun. Father and daughter dead in a ditch because the father didn't just call police on paedo first contact.

What a simpleton. Why didn't he just start a college, recruit a football team, take it to the heights of the sport, start a foundation for children, and then cherry pick the hot ones over the course of several decades? Not to diminish the weirdness of a grown man showing up at a 12 year old's house after meeting on Facebook, since at the bare minimum it shows an almost complete lack of common sense, but this attitude is why when your stupid kid gets lost on the street smart people just ignore his blubbering until he gets hit by a car.

Protip: the vast majority of us have no interest in raping yours any anyone else's kids. Maybe stop just arbitrarily assuming that every time a grown man comes within twenty feet of anybody under the age of 18 there's going to be a rape.

/ actually, don't, I kind of like having a valid reason for steering a wide path around your dumb kids
