For example, what is Fark worth? If I wanted to buy Fark, what would it cost me?

/serious question

$10.4 million?

but they have digg.com worth 109 million. Since it sold for about 1/200th of that can we say fark is worth about 52,000?

Goddamned Bleacher Report valued at $32MM, allegedly going for $200MM.

El Freak: seniorgato: Nadie_AZ: What is that they did again? Paid users to skew content?

I'm kinda curious about that myself. They must have done something... I'm completely out of the loop I guess.

Digg had the completely original and clever idea to have users submit links and other users could vote for or against and comment on them, which was a completely original idea that Kevin Rose thought of all by himself and wasn't based on something similar that some guy in Kentucky did years before. Honest.

Oh! So that's what digg is about.

I went there once and checked out the "about us" page. The description was something along the lines, "Users submit links, and other users digg the links. The digg that gets the most diggs get digg. Digg."

It seriously made no farkin' sense. Left that site, and never went back.

Except now FB pretty much went mongolian on that social network subcontinent.

That's as annoying as "conversate."

And don't get me started about "orientated". (Is "oriented" just too plebeian or something? I think people believe that adding more syllables will make them sound smarterlearninationally superiorated.)

Eric The Pilot: Jumpin Jbot: "For over years, internet webpages refreshing and checking their hits enjoyed the honor of a triumph - a tumultuous parade. In the procession came articles and pirated music and LOLCats from the conquered inter, together with carts laden with safe-for-work porn and captured audiences. The admin rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed trolls walking in chains before him. Sometimes his users, robed in white, stood with him in the ad-supported chariot, or wrote the trace humor. A Farker stood behind the admin, holding a golden crown, and whispering in his ear a warning:

That all glory is fleeting."

You magnificent bastard, I love you.

blahpers: If someone offers to buy your start-up for $4,000,000, and you sell it, and later it's worth either $400,000,000 or $40--well, guess what? You're still a multimillionaire. You win at money.

If you're going to sell (i.e., it isn't a personal labor of love-type thing), and there's a nice profit being offered, just bloody do it already.

Exactly, unless you invent warp drive, just sell it for a reasonable price and create something else with your new found spare time. If you're afraid you may be losing out on something big (just in case), retain a small ownership in the deal.

about 4 years ago I got into digg. I looked at reddit but hated the design, so I stayed put. At some point I got into fark as well. then the 4.0 revision came out and digg became just eye bleachingly ugly. More important though was that the paid out didnt jsut stand out, it was like they were standing behind my laptop, perring over the top w/malevolent eyes that staring at me and burned a hole in my soul. if you look at the front page of digg even now, you'll see that say... the third article is a clearly paid ad for Honda (for example) and then 8 articles down is the exact same clearly paid link for Honda, and 13 articles down, you guessed it, that same farking link for Honda. I remember when the super bowl was happening and there was that ad w/jerry seinfeld and jay leno fighting over who gets a particular car. Was it Honda? cant recall. Anyway, there was a paid link for that car, referencing the two of of them at least 3-4X on every page of digg.

The level of turn off was palpable.

I never looked back. reddit and fark ftw. occasionally mashable

weiserfireman: According to cubestat.com

Fark.com is worth $846,000

Daily page views about 386,000

Estimated Daily Ad revenue $1159.20

I have no idea if any of that is accurate

How much is fark.com worth? It's kind of like real estate. You can pump the selling price all you want, but what a property is worth is what someone is willing to pay for it. Until such time as Drew gets and accepts an offer, this place is priceless.

I left Fark for Digg early on, but I came back after the Version 4 redesign. For me it was several things. The redesign turned a pretty easy to use news site into a social media mess, meaning submitted articles took even longer to get to the front page. The articles that did reach the top tended to be from the same 20 or so people, who were just submitting the same top news from other sites (like Fark). Which meant that the front page was really just what every other news site looked like yesterday. So of course Reddit (which looks like Digg circa 2008 or so) easily took that audience.

There was also that user revolt concerning HD-DVD keys that might have contributed.

The payment scandal was that Jason Calacanis hired these top 20 Digg submitter to submit articles to his revamp of Netscape (remember that?).

Mr. Potatoass:

Goddamned Bleacher Report valued at $32MM, allegedly going for $200MM.

B/R is dramatically underestimated. There's a tremendous potential for click-by-click sports analysis, such as:

- 35 losing NFL coaches resembling LOLcatz
- 7 European-born NHL mascots with "swagger"
- 12 Russian synchro swimmers that never got laid by Portugal's national soccer team's players
- Why the 2007/08 Memphis Grizzlies would have done better with Lew Alcindor

Eff it. I should apply as a B/R lackey...

I was a pretty regular Digg user until their version 4 redesign, too. It wasn't so much the redesign, as the fact that it was very, very obvious by then that everything that made it to the front page was either a sponsored link or a rehash of shiat posted elsewhere first.

But doesn't that describe Fark, too, you ask? There's a key difference: a lot of Farkers try to be funny. Diggers erroneously thought the internet was srs bsns. Redditers are succumbing to the same problem, but at least Reddit is easy to use and likes to show its boobs.

HenryFnord: So it's another slashdot or plastic.

Except Slashdot still has a thriving community which is more than can be said for Digg.

Deathfrogg: GAT_00: Death Eats a Cracker: I remember being on Digg long before I discovered Fark. They changed something about the site that I didn't like and I never went back. Or something like that. It's kinda fuzzy because I was drunk a lot back then.

I think they had a bad retool a few years back, plus a scandal of some kind. Those killed 90%+ of their traffic.

The "scandal" was the Republican Party, through the National Chamber of Commerce were paying people, a LOT of people, to troll the conversations and Digg down or up various stories depending on how friendly they were to the GOP. They were totally gaming the system and corrupting it. Digg became useless for actual discussion when that happened.

I quit using it when it became obvious that the Taliban/Corporatist/Neofascist set were working the site over pretty hard.

They still are. Watch the submitted articles starting around midnight eastern time. It's nearly all far right wing blogs and hate articles. They don't tend to make the front page but it's painfully obvious what they are trying to do that late at night.

Did he? Even if so though, those buttons you can just ignore, or adblock like I did. Gawker's site change is the entire thing, and it all looks and behaves like ass and poop.

I used to read Digg every morning while I ate my breakfast. I loved that site.

Then people started to game the system, and when they redesigned everything, I left. I visited a few times since then and it was a waste of time.

I looked at going to Reddit or Slashdot, but neither of those sites appealed to me. Now I'm just a hollow shell of the man I used to be, and spend my time surfing Fark and making sarcastic comments.

What is it with you farking dorks always screaming "white knight" just cause others don't join in on your irrational hatred of people you don't even know? You wish for people to fail just so you can scream "HA!!!"

His Wiki entry claims he stepped down as the CEO of Digg two years ago and left the company for good over a year ago. So this doesn't really have anything to do with him at all. Plus the monetary numbers for this article are bullshiat, something you'd know had you read the thread instead of rushing in to gleefully celebrate the man's so called bad luck.

Say biatch, next time just admit you got nothing instead of using some boring cliche.

How's it feel to be such a bitter biatch you basically started your day off trying to celebrate some other man's demise? And then be completely wrong about it, and the only thing you can come up with is "YOU MAD". Friggin waste of space.

I hate them with the passion of a thousand suns, nothing annoys me more, it's horrible design. It's also why I never really used Digg and stuck with FARK. Simplicity and readability is ALWAYS the best design choice.

I wonder what happened to digg, I remember my old roommate being obsessed with their flash show they used to do every week. They'd just get drunk and summarized the top internet headlines.
