Digg had the completely original and clever idea to have users submit links and other users could vote for or against and comment on them, which was a completely original idea that Kevin Rose thought of all by himself and wasn't based on something similar that some guy in Kentucky did years before. Honest.

I think they had a bad retool a few years back, plus a scandal of some kind. Those killed 90%+ of their traffic.

Yep, that's what I remember happening too. Their redesign was more than a cosmetic change over but an actual reworking of the site itself and well, it wasn't done well and it ticked people off. I can remember when Digg was popular, then a couple months later, not so much.

Something to think about:

If someone offers to buy your start-up for $4,000,000, and you sell it, and later it's worth either $400,000,000 or $40--well, guess what? You're still a multimillionaire. You win at money.

If you're going to sell (i.e., it isn't a personal labor of love-type thing), and there's a nice profit being offered, just bloody do it already.

What turned me off from Digg was the users themselves. The controversy was over who was submitting what IIRC. It turned into a whiny biatchfest. My response was "Huh, lookathat. These links are submitted by people. What do you know." The biatching in every comment thread finally got me to stop going.

Hey... memepool.com is active again... and probably worth twice as much.
