Avoid some name-brand diapers, as well (I'm looking at you, Luvs).

Consumers tend to prefer brand-name laundry detergent and other cleaning products, Nelson says. The risk: the store brands sometimes are often not as strong, she says.

That's some fine editing.

Target brand diapers were awesome. Way better than Huggies or Luvs.

And as an aside, never buy macaroni and cheese, period. It's just as easy to make your own from scratch, and doesn't taste like day old reheated cardboard.

When I was in college, I lived on store-brand mac & cheese, amongst other things, and even though it doesn't compare to the homemade kind, I didn't taste a real difference between Publix brand, and the Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. Sometimes the store brand is a name brand, so it's not a bad investment to buy them.

Stay away from store-brand condoms--yes, even Woodman's.

When my eldest was a baby, Luvs was the expensive brand. Pampers came in boy and girl varieties.

/that was 20 years ago.

The only store-brand thing I won't buy (again) is hotdogs.

Years ago, very poor, bought a pack of Safeway's Scotch Buy hotdogs. There were large bone chips and other identifiable body parts in these things. Stringy stuff caught between my teeth...

Loves me some hotdogs, but I couldn't bring myself to eat another one for several years after that.

Some stores do offer coupons on their own brands, too, so be sure to compare prices regularly

You DON'T say.

Costco/Kirkland trumps all of those recommendations.

Store brand sodas generally taste like ass and they don't have diet of anything but cola

But um yeah on paper goods, if you look at the sheets per roll count that many have printed on them they usually have like half the sheets per roll as the name brand that they are like a Nickle cheaper than.

I was gonna say. Whoever wrote this article has never been limited to a $20 a week food budget. When the elcheapo mac n cheese is 4 for a buck, thats what you eat. I've become pretty creative with that shiat.

Costco's Kirkland brand paper towels are just fine, I've found.

Costco's Kirkland brand is pretty good for a lot of things especially diapers and baby wipes. They worked great and you got way more for your money.

I always buy name brand Oreos and Ranch Dressing myself.

Some store-brand items are actually the exact same thing as another big-time name brand. They just white-label it for the store, and offer them a bulk discount.

I know when I was in photography in college, we knew what all the store brand 35 MM films actually were, and saved good money.

I'm sure this is the same for other stuff as well.

A world of this.

Wal-Mart's brand will do in a pinch, as will K-Mart's.

FTH: "Too orange."

Are we talking about the diapers, the content therein, or the mac and cheese? I'm so confused.

PC brand white cheddar macaroni and cheese is way better than KD. Oddly, the PC brand orange cheddar macaroni and cheese is worse than KD

When I grew up I lived off Ralph's brand Iced Tea(tasted like the Nestea in a tin can with even more sugar, awesome), Ralph's brand Hamburger Helper, and Stater Bros brand Mac and Cheese(little dynamite sticks smothered in "hot orange" powder. I wouldn't have it any other way. Generics are the bomb.

I only buy name brand items, even when I was poor.

Kraft Macaroni & Cheese
Camel cigarettes
Dr Pepper
Hormel Black Label bacon

I will live and die by CVS's Earth Essentials toilet paper. Yes, it's single-ply, but the roll lasts FOREVER, and the paper is soft and sturdy. And you can trust me -- I can go through a roll of small, no-name toilet paper in about three dumps.

2 boxes of knock off mac and cheese ( cheese in big silver pouch ) 1 kielbasa sausage cut up and sauteed with half an onion ( mince in the processor ) .some times i add real bacon bits . the soft kind . top with triple shredded cheddar cheese and half a can of of those fried onions that you use on green bean casserole . put in oven for 8-10 mins at 350 . ( too long and you dry out macnchz ) . trailer park 4 star meal ....

If, however, you do....get the Kraft Velveta and Shells. Even the microwave version comes out yummy

Two exceptions are Ginger ale and Orange. It's pretty damn hard to fark up orange.

The generic Mac & Cheese if you dump a slice of crap processed "American Cheese" and a teaspoon of the
Kraft mac&cheese powder that they sell for popcorn comes out just as good and far cheaper.

I also picked up a pasta maker from the local thrift store for $5 and it made awesome mac & cheese as soon as I learned how to dry it correctly. Flour, water, spices if you get fancy, leave out to dry for a night, and even buying the $1 packages of noodles is more expensive than spending some time doing your own.

Been a few years - youngest's been potty trained since 2003 - but it made sense to keep cheap disposable diapers on hand as well as good ones. We'd never put them to bed for the night with the cheap ones, but we knew the kids' schedules well enough. When we were pretty confident based on experience that we'd be changing several diapers within the next few hours we'd use the cheap ones. Worked well, saved money.
