she's freaking hot. well, ok. for an athlete. and she has a super hot voice. i don't how to describe it, but she talks like she's stoned, which for some reason makes her sound freaking hot. she has this weird lazy drawl type thing, but it doesn't sound southern.

and if you have a strong stomach, you can watch her go Operation Codename: Gumby on a couple chicks' elbows. i like her last fight where her opponent was like, "rousey sucks, she has no technique, all she does is get people in armbars."

fast forward to the fight were 3 minutes in, Rousey has the chick's elbow at like, a 120-degree angle. and the idiot wouldn't tap and the ref didn't stop the fight.

She was asked "what if a Kardashian was in the ring?"

And good on her for saying what everyone in the world thinks, but nobody in TV or entertainment has the balls to say. (And I mean the part about a no-talent sex-video slut being pushed in the face of 13 yr olds, not the part about kicking the crap out of her)

2012-07-12 03:42:11 PM
"Why is everyone slipping it under the carpet now?" she asked. "I don't want some girl whose entire fame is based on a sex video to be selling Sketchers to my 13-year-old little sister." "It's just not healthy and [my 13-year-old sister] doesn't need to have role models like this."

If only there were people who could provide better role models for children. Perhaps those same people could be in charge of what media they consume and what products they buy.

There are better role models. See Rhonda here is a better role model and she'll rip your f*cking arm off.

Yeah, but she's an MMA fighter, so no one is expecting her to say anything super insightful. As such, she gets a pass.

She's a meathead, just like all the other people in her biz who enter the ring.

I don't think you need to "sports-combat adjust" her IQ when 7 or her 8 fights didn't last a minute. I don't think she is stupid or has suffered any brain injury, she just talks trash. And talking trash gets her noticed and paid more.

As someone who did martial arts for quite a while, I can testify that you have lots of fights long before you have official matches.

And, seeing how some of my less-disciplined MMA companions would fight in their young age, even as practice, there's no doubt that if you've made it to the popularity she has, you've killed more than a few braincells.

She is an Olympic level judoka and pretty much skated into MMA without much struggling in any small shows. She isn't just some Tapfliction Bro fresh out of high school varsity wrestling with delusions of adequacy. The vast majority of female MMA fighters grew out of a kickboxing background and when they fight a high level grappler like Rhonda "Rape Face" Rousey (of which there are few) they don't do well. She may get tagged every now and then but no harder that if she forgot the mustard on her boyfriend's sandwich.

I really think you're underestimating how hard people train in MMA. Particularly people who are competition oriented. It's like Crossfit nonsense x 100.

I do think it's pretty entertaining that you're basically hero worshipping her the same way people hero worshipped the Gracies in the 90s, though. Some things never change.

And you vastly overestimate the training techniques and drive of a female MMA fighter versus an Olympic level judoka. It simply no contest. Basically women's MMA is at the point where men's MMA was 15 years ago where a fighter who is a master in one discipline can dominate.

Okay, since people don't get it, let's try this another way.

She didn't come out of the womb knowing how to fight. Learning to fight, especially in the xxtreeeeemmeeeee mindset of the MMA fighter, you get hurt when learning. A lot. Yes, she's probably very good now. She didn't start that way and no doubt got hurt quite a bit getting to where she is. No, you don't lose "practice" braincells during your "practice" chokeouts and concussions. They count.

She never did it that way because she never had to. Womens MMA has a much lower threshold for even the entry level because it is so small. With her resume Rhonda didn't need to grind her way into the sport fighting in parking lots and empty swimming pools like every other Hollywood movie portrays it. Her third fight ever was in the top tier org that has women's MMA. She's 5-0 all first round submissions by armbar. She doesn't get beat up much so far. All her training prior to that was judo which isn't big on concussions.

The guys have a much longer and steeper climb and their desperation shows every time the try to "win" at sparring. Or maybe they just don't like YOU. Her training camp takes damn good care of her and if she gets hurt in training (as many fighters do) it won't be from getting her head caved in.

Nobody at her level subscribes to the "tap, nap or snap" mentality IN TRAINING. Athletes in every sport get injured in training. Usually more often than in competition itself.

You have a much more rosy view of women in competitive (and even non-competitive) martial arts than my experience has shown me. My experience has been they're just as hardcore as the men are, even moreso since they often feel they have to prove themselves. I personally saw a woman sparring with her forearm in a cast. The instructor told the guy to take it easy, but she sure wasn't.

/and this was in the mid-late 90s

I don't doubt their collective desire to perform well. It is the level they have reached so far I will deride. The distribution of talent in women's MMA is very uneven. Those considered to be the best also tend to be the heaviest. If any male fighter had missed weight as often as Gina Carano he would be laughed out of the sport. Finally the 140 lb weight class was invented just so she could beat up on the 135 lbers (where the majority of the better fighters are). Once she went up against Santos and lost badly she retired to do movies. That fight showed that the talent disparity was even more severe than previously thought.

Women's MMA is like watching a dog walk on it's hind legs. You watch because it's being done AT ALL not because it's being done well. As carnifex2005 said earlier women's MMA is lagging men's MMA to the point where a well trained but (mostly) one dimensional fighter can rout an entire weight class. The other women trying to make it in MMA might be getting butchered in sparring but Rousey already doesn't need to.

You miss my point that an Olympic medalist that has been training since she was 10 will dominate a MMA fighter since she has had far more experience at a very high level in at her craft than others at this point in women's MMA. In about 10 years that probably won't be enough but at this point in women's mma it certainly is enough to dominate.
