The comments to that article are pretty amusing. Some folks really, really want to make it clear that he's ethnically Chinese.

It's time for the US to come out and say we backed the wrong horse in this struggle. HCM was a freedom fighter in WWII, and after the war we helped France regain its colony, big mistake. A lot of lives could have been saved. We owe them an apology for destroying their country.

All of the friends I have from highschool and before have been in fist fights with me. Most times, alcohol was involved, and always for something stupid, so make in up was easy. And i was not the only one saying sorry, we were just as screwed up.

I don't know how making up for the right to mine their precious stones while fighting with gunfire and napalm can be done, but if so I suppose they will be BFFs.

Cherry blew the wing off Hong Me's jet with a missile. Hong Me was able to eject, and the two met in Vietnam four years ago.

I suppose nothing happened between missile and meeting.

Besides, they met in Viet Nam quite a while before that.

And neither refused the meeting.

After what I saw in Nam, I can't even walk into a Chinese Buffet without coldcocking the waitress.

That's actually pretty cool. Just because our governments went full retard doesn't mean that these men can't be met in friendship. Can't really see us hugging any Islamic fundies who have tried to kill us. Nope..probably not going to happen.

I doubt they would have tried killing each other if they were friends back in the day.

So we help France and they still bailed on NATO. They spent the entire cold war hedging that bet.

Fark 'em. Once a collaborator always a collaborator and I won't feel one bit sorry for France when this guy chainsaws them all in half.

FTFA: "And he became very emotional, and teared up, as we were walking by the wall, in Washington D.C., with all those 58,000 American names on it," Cherry said.

I have to yell at the TV when they say "58000 people died in the war". Because 3,000,000 Vietnamese died in the war. Are they not people? That gets me really yelling at the TV. Or radio. Probably loud enough that they can hear me.

True warriors bear no personal ill will to their enemy. They are the enemy; you fight them, you defeat them, you respect them, but you do not hate them. Hatred blinds you to the mssion. As a combat veteran myself I can tell you that very few soldiers hate the enemy except in the most abstract sense. The ones that harbored personal hatred were generally the ones you didn't want to be alone with because they were pretty much crazy.

/has some stories.

Neither of them were giving orders, they were just soldiers fighting for their sides.

Just like some soldiers can never forgive "the Japs", "the Krauts" or whatever, many never were emotionally invested in the conflict beyond doing their jobs and protecting their buddies.

There's a lot of that in the WWII era, as well.

Do you get worked up over the Soviets or Germans who died in WWII? I bet not.

This Vietnamese guy is one up on you.

Are you kidding me? I can think of no more impersonal, yet weirdly intimate relationship than between two faceless men trying to kill each other. Once the civilians decide it's done, wouldn't you want to meet the man who tried to kill you as you tried to kill him?

American asked around, "They don't eat green peas but pretty close. They like these 'mung bean' things. Same thing." So he offered to cook the beans, the Vietnamese could do the rest. Not too much of a risk for his first try at Vietnamese food, it's just their kind of green peas.

And it worked! Fish and rice came together fine, and he'd slowcooked the beans just right. They ate it together, just the two people. Vietnamese congratulates American, trying with his best English, "He mung bot' people!" and smiled.

I once met an old German guy in a US bar who said he was an ME-262 pilot. I bought him a beer and saluted his bravery.
