The raw milk I used to drink as a child was delicious and the milk's flavor does depend a lot on what the cows eat during the day. I lived on a farm with my grandparents as a young child and the cows were turned out to the pasture most days.

All I know is that my brother and I invariably squabbled over who was to get 'the top of the milk' on our breakfast porridge.

My grandmother still wretches when she thinks of that thing. Great grammy used to yell at her, as they were poor and lucky that Uncle Bill had a dairy farm.

I've found that buying milk in paper cartons tastes a lot better than the plastic gallon jugs due to the amount of light that the contents get exposed to during transport and display.

I get milk from the local dairy in glass jars (they take them back and re-use them). It has a flavor. It tastes like milk.

The milk I used to get from the grocery store was OK in paper, and fricking AWFUL in the plastic jugs.

All milk tastes better from a chilled glass container. Pour a glass and leave it in the fridge, return to it in a few hours. It'll taste better than the milk from the carton or jug.

Fresh butter milk with ice chips in it to catch the butter.

Plus, with everyone drinking skim, 2%, low fat, and other flavors of literally watered down milk, I imagine that isn't helping the flavor department either.

I remember having to drink skim milk as a child.
Wretched, nasty stuff.
My mother would buy the "marked down for quick sale" stuff and freeze it.
Sometimes there would be ice slivers in my bowl of shredded wheat cereal.

Oddly enough, I like skim milk now.

Milk is nasty and smells disgusting.

Unless it's in yummy ice cream form.

Milk that's been frozen and thawed is the nastiest of the nasty.

I'm not sure what you're getting at, but there's no butter in buttermilk. Buttermilk is what's left over after you churn out the butter. Despite what the name implies, It's low fat.

Huh. Must have been the issue.

I recently picked up some "organic" milk because it was on sale vs the regular milk and it tastes SO GOOD. I'll get it again as long as it's the same price as regular.

The only thing that matters is profit. As long as people throw it down their gullets, it'll get sold. Same applies to shoebox condos and other things marketed emotionally.

Milk here tastes like metallic ass.

Travel to any poor country in Africa and the milk tastes like heaven. Rich and creamy and great in coffee, not metallic tasting at all. Amazing what cows grazing naturally can do.

there is a local dairy farm now selling at my grocery store that has whole milk in glass containers. super good. and if you return the glass bottle you get $2.50 back...so it is basically buy two jugs and get the second for free.

Stonyfield organic actually has a taste to it. It's usually cheaper than Horizon, too.

I remember my first real milk ... sweet and insanely creamy-still warm!
Christ, it was seriously the best thing I'd ever tasted in my life.

Sadly, I had to cut back and eventually give it up altogether when my teeth finally came in.

Can't say as I've had fresh milk or organic or whatnot, but I can say that if anyone's drinking skim or 2% or whatever the fark, they're terrible people. Whole, vitamin D is the only way to go [for the mass-produced stuff].

I hate it when paragraphs are just one sentence long. The story starts out allright, but it gets so choppy in the middle, that I'm completely turned off. Who edits these things?

When I was in Costa Rica, milk had a veeeery different taste than it does here in the States. I was so unused to having tasty milk that it wasn't pleasant until I was there a while.

This. I only buy milk in cardboard containers now because anything from plastic tastes like skim to me.

Also I buy organic whole milk, because fat is delicious. Haven't done a double-blind taste test on organic vs. non-organic, but when I taste non-organic it's just not as good.

I go to the local farmer here, and get fresh raw milk once a week

2012-07-12 03:54:59 PM
I was raised drinking whole milk and the first time I had skim or 1% I was completely disgusted. It was like cloudy water with little white bits floating in it. Got used to it since I'm not a huge milk drinker and tend to go with whatever those around me want.

What was REALLY disgusting though was going back to mom's house after years of drinking 1% and pouring a glass of milk, and then remembering it was whole milk as I took a drink. Bleeehhh!

Skim and 1% have only ever tasted like chalk-colored water. 2%-Whole is where it's at.

I've had milk where the cows had been given chocolate to eat. Heavenly.

But leave it up to big bushiness to fark things up. Starting with the 1970s, almost everything started losing it's flavor because it was good for business. Strawberries and tomatoes taste like wet newspaper. Honey is being diluted with corn syrup. And there isn't that big a difference between the butcher and the pharmacy in my local market anymore.
