I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the next time some talking-point spewing idiot uses the phrase "job killing policy" or "job killing regulation", they have exactly 15 seconds to name one and explain how that particular regulation is killing jobs. Failure to do so will result in a kick to the head with a steel-toed boot, followed by a ball-peen hammer to the nuts.

Seriously, if the loss of jobs is directly attributable to Obama's economic policies, then explain the massive loss of jobs and spike in unemployment from 2006-2008 when the Bush Administration - who's very policies you GOP cocks want to reinstate - was in charge. Then explain why unemployment has leveled off and gone down under Obama. I know the GOP trades in cognitive dissonance, but this is so friggin' irritating.

So I went home for the fourth of July, and after a bit of nettling, I told my parents that if Obama had been a republican president 20 years ago, instead of Bush 1st, with the exact same legislation and principles, they would have been championing him as the last great president of our lifetimes.

Here was the answer from a man who is retiring from a life of being a surgeon, making a good 300, 400k a year, complaining that teachers make too much and that he has to pay for a couple years of COBRA for my mom until she can join him on medicaid or else he'll get fined, why is COBRA more expensive than the fine, COBRA should only cost $700 a year:

"Son, 30 years ago JACK KENNEDY was a Republican. And your grandmother (the family atheist liberal) LOVED him."

Let that sink in for a bit. My father, an educated, upper class professional who is turning 65, thinks that only 30 years have passed since JFK was president, equates Obama to JFK in his heart, and instead of seeing the comparison to JFK as being proof of how far to the right the Republican party has skewed, he sees it as proof of how misguided the Republican party used to be, full of the libbiest libs who ever RINO'd.

He is voting for Mitt Romney, a man he openly declares SHOULD NOT be president, and will give you numerous reasons he should not be president, because Obama is the greatest danger this nation has EVER faced.

I don't get it, man. I don't get it at all.

I'm honestly trying to figure out why they are doing this. It can't be just plain ol' religious ideology. There's money in this, somewhere.

There's votes in this. Votes leading to power, leading to money. They don't give a crap about abortion, per se (well, maybe some like Santorum or Bachmann do), but they care about keeping the power they have and gaining more of it if possible. It's the same reason many of them run on all sort of family values.

Anti-homosexual marriage. Why? Because gays will destroy marriage... as said by many prominent Republican and conservative figures who have multiple ex-wives. They don't give a sh*t about marriage, they know it'll create jobs and boost the economy, but it'll cost them votes if they really support it. So they have to fight it, and to keep the votes coming in they have to fight it harder and harder.

Anti-evolution. Why? Because science kills religion... as said by many prominent politicians who either have loved ones saved thanks to the medical advances made possible by a modern understanding of evolutionary theory or were themselves saved. Heck, Ron Paul is a medical doctor. That profession is able to advance in large part due to advances in biology and chemistry. But they have to fight it to keep the votes coming in, and they have to fight louder as more politicians enter the arena knowing it's a cheap way to score points.

Anti-comprehensive sex education. Why? Because some people genuinely think if you keep children from knowing about X, they won't ever do X... as suggested by the well-known grandmother of a bastard child, Sarah Palin, among dozens and dozens of other prominent Republican politicians whose states are leaders for underage pregnancy and STD transmission.

We could go on and on and on through the list of "family value" talking points. But the point is, while a few of them may genuinely believe those lines (again, examples include people like Santorum or Bachmann), most of them don't. They just tow the party line as it progresses further to the right than the Third Reich ever dreamed of going because it's easier to get elected, it's easier to keep power, to get more, and to become the target of millions of dollars of campaign contributions and lobbying. The worst thing that could happen for the Republican party is if their expressed party platforms actually happened. But they have to waste everyone's time, and billions of taxpayer dollars ever year, fighting these fights they don't really want to win because their game plan is a little more long-term, abstract, and self-serving.

Now, now, that's not entirely true. About a year and a half ago, I got a link approved from Jim Manzi about unbundling the welfare state. That said, he's easily an outlier in the GOP given his statements that AGW is real and his reliance on science in his work.

I think that's the point right there.

They're totally cool with the government telling other women that they can't have an abortion, but when they're in the situation, their tune changes quick. Then it's about "personal freedom" or some other catchphrase that they don't fully understand.

SphericalTime: It's funny that the GOP makes that claim as another state tries to ban abortion through over-regulation or the US House of Representatives goes back to work on abortion legislation.
