(The Hill)   Nancy Pelosi believes Romney deliberately got himself booed at NAACP speech, so he could appeal to racists. But what was the plan for the standing ovation he got? C'mon, don't keep us waiting Nancy   (thehill.com) divider line 24

That might not have mattered to the audience in the auditorium, but as Romney advisers explain, this speech was not just aimed at the people sitting in their seats or African American voters in general.

They admitted this was their plan going in.

Something like 7 million African Americans will gain health insurance through Obamacare, so going in there and joyfully declaring that you're going to repeal it without providing any kind of alternative was a gigantic FU to the audience.

And 20 million will lose the coverage they are now enjoying if Obamacare is implemented. Sounds fair to me.

The non-partisan PolticalFact.com rated that claim as false.

Weird. The article opens with Pelosi saying Romney made a political calculation, and then never says what Pelosi thought Romney might gain.

No wonder no one wants to pay for news anymore.

I think I can reach across partisan lines and say that we should all join together in mutual dislike for this shrill politician.

And now I'll play the race card:
If you think blacks need a smart white man to stand up before them and force-feed them some kind of hard truth about bootstrappiness, you are a farking racist.

I live near detroit. If you are born in detroit in poverty, you are pretty much farked. You've got a 50% chance to be in poverty your whole freaking life. You are measurably behind by a big margin as early as first grade and it gets worse the further you go. Your chances of success in life or of bridging the education gap between the poor and the rich have been getting worse over the past 30 years. I don't have the statistics for the 50% who do make it out of poverty, but I'm willing to bet there is a pretty big chunk that will just barely hit lower-middle class and get stuck there.

The NAACP cares about the state of poor black people. I'm sure the NAACP would be fine with aiding poor black people via a rising tide that lifts all the boats (or however that goes), but Romney isn't suggesting that. At BEST he's claimed he'll help the middle class. He's flat-out said he doesn't care about the poor, and he fully and frankly admits he'll go after programs that help them because he's called them waste. He claims he will balance the budget while lowering taxes on the rich and is against raising them on anyone, which means a guarantee of less revenue, which means massive cuts.

Nothing he does will help poor black people, or poor white people. Of course the NAACP would boo him, and rightfully so. Either he has such a low opinion of the NAACP that he thought they'd latch onto his one sentence that they were looking at the best president for blacks, or he knew they would boo him, knows his policies are bad for them, and Nancy Pelosi is right.

This ascribes a level of sophistication and competence to Romney and his staff heretofore nowhere in evidence.

So, no.

"But I hope people understand this, your friends who like Obamacare, you remind them of this, if they want more stuff from government tell them to go vote for the other guy-more free stuff. But don't forget nothing is really free."

The standing ovation was a respect thing, not an endorsement of Romney.

I think the real problem for Mitt is how long he took to recover from being booed while speaking, and how poor a job he did at it. If he was expecting boos, and still took that long to try to recover, he's boned when he has to think on his feet in a debate this fall.

vernonFL: I disagree with Pelosi, I think Romney is just awkward and tone deaf but was genuinely trying to reach out to African Americans.

Bill O. had Jimmy j.j. Walker on his show last night, trying to sell the idea that black people don't have to vote for Obama. It's an effort to peel off voters. It's not a conspiracy, it's just ham fisted pandering.

She can't fathom that a politician would not pander and condescend to his audience. He actually said what he believed.

Arkanaut: Assuming that was the plan, they could always just ignore any inconvenient facts like a standing ovation. It wouldn't be the first time someone edited video for political gain *cough*Breitbart*cough*.

Except, leaving out parts of the speech that would make him look good in the black community is not the same as editing someone's story out of context to make her look like a racist.

Thanks for playing... Johnny, tell him about these great consolation prizes!

Watching NBC, their take:

Mitt Romney was briefly booed when he called for the repeal of healthcare reform, but left with a standing ovation.

No mention of Mitt telling them that he was the right guy to represent the interests of Black people.

He's running against a black guy; he does not need to appeal to racists.

farkityfarker: Romney can't be stupid enough to think he could win votes from blah people.

It's obvious who he was trying to appeal to. Even though he probably already had their votes.

Yes, thank you. Solidifying the solidified is solidly pointless.

Romney was there because it would have been a bigger outrage in the "liberal media" if he didn't show up.

Romney has stated as much himself. If he wanted the Black vote, he should have spend some time talking about issues the NAACP cares about.
