3. The scene in the little kid's bedroom in Close Encounters when the aliens made all his toys come to life and the light coming out of the floor vent. That scared the crap out of me!.

Oh wow, I had totally forgotten about that until you mentioned it. I think the red light in the vent made a very young me think something was crawling up to get them.

A Volkswagen with a mind of its own, driving all over the place and going mad. If that isn't scary, I don't know what is.

Grew up in the seventies. The list fails without Phyllis Diller guest starring on the Love Boat and Roddy McDowell as Satan on Fantasy Island.

I honestly thought I was the only human being on the entire planet that was scared to death of the Venus probe. Every day when the bus droped me off at the end of our lane, I would run all the way home because I was afraid of the probe.


A year or so ago I watched some clips of the episode where he is fighting it, and it was just laughable. All that slow mo and bionic noises.

Scared the crap out of me as a kid... and this is a Disney film!

Same here. Even as a little kid, I knew that Wonka was just messing around with them.

Exactly. He's an eccentric who thought the group would enjoy a little thrill ride.

But to this day, I still can't decide if he is really that furious at Charlie, or is he just hamming it up to see if that would drive Charlie to sell the Everlasting Gobstopper to Slugworth. I'm sure that Gene Wilder played it so that it could be read either way.

This show. Every episode.

There was nothing scarier than Robert Stack narrating stories about brutal murders, unexplained phenomena and strange disappearances. "The killer is still at large. He may be anywhere in America. He may be in your home town at this very moment. Maybe even outside your window. What was that noise just now? Maybe you should go outside and check it out."

Even the theme song was creepier than half the things on this list.

The farking clown on "Poltergeist". If I ever develop full fledged clown phobia, that one will be the reason, followed by John Wayne Gacy and Pennywise in that order. I'd already read 'It' 3 or 4 times, so Pennywise was a little less of a freak out by the time the miniseries came out.

I remember watching Black Sabbath on teh Creature Double Feature. This chick gave me nightmares.

Saw this as a teenager, and while not the "scariest", still creeped me the eff out:

The Bunyip

Pennywise would be my number one. My bed was against my wall growing up and I was way too scared to even let my arm drape down between my mattress and the wall in case that creepy bastard was down there ready to drag me under.

When I was a child, and she grew into a giant, I cried. Everytime. It was farking terrifying! Her voice, face, especially when her eyes got all spirally....Man, if Disney was trying to scar me as a child, mission accomplished.

Also, there was an episode of the (I think) 80s Twilight Zone. I don't remember much of it, but this kid was taking care of his grandmother alone in the house. She's like evil or possessed. At one point we see her, and she is vile. Then she drags the kid into the bed and I think kills him, or eats him. I managed to block most of it out, but I couldn't sleep for days.

otherginger: I am old old old, and the abominable snowman on Rudolph did, in fact, scare me when I was little. As did the Grinch. As did Cruella de Ville, who was scarier than Malificent. I also remember a show where Huck Finn was live action mixed with animation and in each episode the guy who played Lurch showed up as some form of Engine Joe. He scared me.

I was a weenie little kid in the 60s.

That would be the Child Catcher, and yes, this list is lame without him. Growing up the the US in the 70's, most of the characters in this list are unknown to me or not so scary when I saw them
